Everything I hear about Twitter reinforces my view that it is a vile type of social media that I want nothing to do with, and as you say Gaga, that you do not have an account, neither do I and can think of nothing that would induce me to start an account. I think we should ignore the vile abuse that is directed through Twitter towards people of all ethnicities, genders, and professions. We need to look carefully at mainstream media to see if there’s racism.

maddyone Mon 27-Jan-20 16:35:57

The question is, did Meghan come from that area or not? If she did, so what. If she didn’t, so what. It’s all overplayed.

Anniebach Mon 27-Jan-20 16:43:18

Ther was no mention of colour ,how is it racist ? As for Twitter , we know from the anti semetic discussions we have had , Twitter has vile racist comments .

Jane10 Mon 27-Jan-20 16:48:52

It all depends who you follow on Twitter. You don't have to follow political people or tittle tatlers. It's not fair to blame Twitter. I also like that you can just block people you don't want to hear from or read about.
I have a lovely time on Twitter reading about cars, dogs, otters, books and looking at lovely paintings etc.

Jane10 Mon 27-Jan-20 16:49:24

That's cats not cars!

Chestnut Mon 27-Jan-20 16:49:42

Well said Tickingbird. I have looked at the article and it seems just the same as any article (of that type) written by the Daily Mail. They always try to shock their readers with scandalous headlines. I don't think it would have been any different if Harry's girlfriend had been white but from a trailer park. So racist it isn't.
I say article 'of that type' because in fairness I've seen some amazing articles in the online DM under health, science or travel.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 27-Jan-20 16:51:23

I enjoy twitter, especially Mr.Lumpy and Friends, all about badgers and foxes.

No one is compelled to follow racists, foul mouths etc.

maddyone Mon 27-Jan-20 17:06:17

It’s good to hear something good about Twitter for a change, but I’ll still steer clear. Someone else told me that Twitter has it’s good side once, I think it was growstuff, but not sure. She’s not on this thread anyway, I don’t think.

Anniebach Mon 27-Jan-20 17:16:06

I follow two people on Twitter, Sarah Brown and Margaret Hodge, no one else . If people read racist comments surely they choose to follow those people ?

trisher Mon 27-Jan-20 17:23:59

I didn't withdraw any post by the way GNHQ withdrew it because the 'n' word was used. As the original article was written by a black woman and quoted a Conservative candidate I would have thought it shoud be allowed but apparently not. Anyway why the term race card should not be used
The real point about race cards is that claiming their existence is itself deeply racist. The idea first seems to have entered the lexicon in the 1960s, when “the race card” was used to describe the ways in which rightwing politicians weaponised fears about black people to gain votes – such as the 1964 Conservative parliamentary candidate for Smethwick reportedly warning his prospective constituents: “If you want a n*** for a neighbour, vote Labour.” These days, it is more frequently deployed to delegitimise the voices of people on the receiving end of those narratives. Either way, the one consistent thing seems to be that it always involves setting up people of colour to lose

GagaJo Mon 27-Jan-20 17:36:42

The real point about race cards is that claiming their existence is itself deeply racist.

Exactly Trisher.

It’s fact she comes from a neighbourhood not that far from Compton. The headline was a play on the famous film title “Straight outta Compton”.

1) She doesn't come from Compton. Born in LA, grew up in View Park-Windsor.

2) Compton is a high crime, high violence area. The POINT about placing MM there is to denigrate her and to align her with black violence and crime. As you so obviously know and agree with.

3) REALLY? Thanks for stating the obvious.

4) It is racist of you to insist that the article ISN'T racist when it is one of the articles regularly alluded to, to prove the racism of the UK mainstream media.

GagaJo Mon 27-Jan-20 17:39:14

Oh, and using the word 'exotic' to describe someone JUST because their skin is not white is also racist. It is a way of 'othering' someone to exaggerate their difference.

trisher Mon 27-Jan-20 18:04:58

Oh GNs a place of tolerance and fun
And racism just can't raise its head here
And the posters are nice to everyone
And I am Marie of Rumania
(with apologies to Dorothy Parker)

tickingbird Mon 27-Jan-20 18:16:52

So we’re all in agreement then. The press haven’t been racist to MM and LF is a hero of our time. Hallelujah!!

3nanny6 Mon 27-Jan-20 18:30:07

Okay |Trisher I am glad GNHQ withdrew your post that contained the N word. I am not having a go because as you say the N word was quoted by a black woman and something about a Conservative candidate. That still does not make it acceptable. It is the most derogatory word to use to ethnic minorities.
I still don't think you get the point Trisher because you hear someone else has used the N word you think you are still okay to then print it.
In my neighbourhood people will use the N word when sometimes in conversation with me. They know perfectly well I have people of colour in my family and they have good excuse to use "Oh you know I don't mean you because you are not like most of them" I always say to them just don't use those words in front of me as I find it most inappropriate and usually go out of my way to cross the road in future when I see them coming.

The term Race Card is another one and is often thrown about when others see someone getting something that they didn't get (that someone always being black).
In all honesty it's like children in the school playground in fact children often will go on to repeat these words because they have heard them behind closed doors at home.

trisher Mon 27-Jan-20 18:36:45

3nanny6 so if someone used that word no matter how long ago you don't think anyone should quote it to show how racist they were? How else can you draw attention to real racism?

Chestnut Mon 27-Jan-20 18:38:11

Oh for goodness sake trisher you are posting the same thing over and over again about the 'race card' and repeating it won't make it any less nonsense.
So I will have to repeat....you know perfectly well what they mean by that, and it has nothing to do with the original meaning. The meaning of many words have changed over time. Would you complain if someone used the word 'gay' when they mean homosexual?

Anniebach Mon 27-Jan-20 18:40:34

I think it should be quoted , how else can we discuss the past.

Chestnut Mon 27-Jan-20 18:47:14

3nanny6 The term Race Card is another one and is often thrown about when others see someone getting something that they didn't get (that someone always being black).
Not so, whenever I've heard that term it means someone is using race as an excuse to accuse someone of racism, even when it is not justified, assuming it will be the winning card in a game of cards, like drawing an Ace.

tickingbird Mon 27-Jan-20 18:57:30

Gagajo Profanity after profanity. Huge disrespect to women and yes, racism.

This is what you said regarding LF. You don’t seem to have a problem with some of your cohorts exhibiting the same behaviour regarding the use of repeated profanity and on Gransnet of all places. How you can accuse me of twisting it is laughable. It is you that’s in knots!

3nanny6 Mon 27-Jan-20 19:15:03

Firstly to Trisha , yes I know it was used long ago we all know the series "Roots" and the books by Alex Hailey (have I spelt his last name correctly) and if you do not know it research it, also you will then know he traced his ancestors back to slavery.
The point I make is that now we have moved forward (well some of us)and the N word is completely derogatory to use in description of a black person or ethnic minority which ever one you wish to use.
Anniebach we can chose other words and we can discuss slavery but there is no need to use the N word it is a word always brought out to make the person it is directed to fully aware of what name you are calling them.
Chestnut I am pointing out that in social situations I have been in many times I have heard white people say "oh they are playing the race card" and I do not mean getting the deck of cards out for a game. Like I posted previously it has been when someone has something they have not got.
In view of what I have posted I try to live my life in both worlds I have friends in white people and many in black, a few in Asian and not any in sikh I see myself living in a multicultural community and to address any of my friends etc with the N word would be inappropriate.

GagaJo Mon 27-Jan-20 19:30:42

tickingbird, I am not the one using profanity.

You are excusing racism.

No wonder Gransnet gets quoted in the MMS.

maddyone Mon 27-Jan-20 19:47:23

What’s the MMS?
