Herd, cull, self isolate. These trip off the tongue. They have a sinister sound to me, an Orwellian feel.

As someone posted on Facebook, 'Did Stephen King write this year?'

Barberdice Tue 17-Mar-20 14:59:19

Talking of songs I keep singing 'Ai no Correda' by Quincy Jones.
I know it's strange but can't help it because of the constant talk about the virus.

Labaik Tue 17-Mar-20 15:08:59

What is amazing is how many groups have been set up at such short notice to help people that are self isolating. My daughter has just set one up because she said 'mum, we have to do it now not next week or the week after'. She also said her GP friend had told her to completely keep the family away from me and my partner. We were going to have a much looked forward to family holiday together at Easter but that's not going to happen now.

Surely the point of medical terminology is that it is precise? Used correctly it is not pedantic.

This is a direct quote from Johnson's briefing today:

"And we must act like any war-time government and do anything it takes to support our economy."

He also used some other imagery of war.

I think he does see himself as Churchill (or Thatcher with the Falklands), which is farcical.

Churchill was an inspiring leader, but he left the logistics, decision making and details to the very capable civil servants, forces leaders and other politicians, such as Attlee and Beveridge. Unfortunately, he's managed to p*ss off some of his civil servants over the last few weeks and has only appointed yes men and women to his cabinet.

Herd immunity without a vaccine is culling. It involves the majority of the population becoming immune. Without a vaccine that can only happen if the majority of people are infected. The mortality rate is disputed, but it's undoubtedly higher than seasonal flu and will involve the deaths of many thousands of people, especially those over 60.

The alternative strategy would have been to try and contain the spread, which is what appears to have happened in South Korea. The government made a choice to abandon containment.

without a vaccine

Are you working on one growstuff as you always seem to be so knowledgeable?
It's not as easy as you think, is it as my niece knows, working flat out.

POGS Tue 17-Mar-20 21:35:22

Oh for heavens sake GNHQ

lemongrove Tue 17-Mar-20 21:48:30

Yes ...GNHQ are at it again, sigh! Yet the outrageous sweary posts on Mumsnet continue unabated,
Is it ageism??

lemongrove Tue 17-Mar-20 21:49:48

Callistemon I was wondering the same.?

POGS Tue 17-Mar-20 22:23:50

It's not as though there was any swearing!

Just repeating posters own words, which is rather an ironic reason for getting your post deleted stating against forum guide lines. confused

lemongrove Tue 17-Mar-20 22:30:26

Yes, I know POGS but you should see some of the posts on MM, presumably nobody reports them there, whereas here, snowflake-ery abounds.

Callistemon Tue 17-Mar-20 23:05:40

William Hanage needs to get his facts right as over 70s and vulnerable people are being told to stay at home and not risk exposing themselves to the virus.
He needs to concentrate on what is happening in America and let our specialists advise us here and not try to make political hay out of this crisis situation.

I don’t think “herd immunity” is sinister, but it is maybe condescending. Although watching the queue of elephants I saw pushing trolleys around Aldi, I sort of get it. God knows why these people are stockpiling pasta and rice. They should do a big swerve around the carbs. Good time to start the Adkins diet, perhaps? I invented the word “tanorexic” by the way. Yes I am very proud. Yes, as someone pointed out on here, I am very smug. Proud. Smug. That’s me.

Truddles Wed 18-Mar-20 07:42:00

Self-isolate=duvet day.
Lockdown=go home from work, eat dinner in front of tv.
Herd immunity=being coughed/sneezed at/on at the Aldi checkout (like what always happens, forever, never mind Coronavirus).

MerylStreep Wed 18-Mar-20 07:55:31

I think it's the village stocks, for you, POGS ?
