Tweet from Lord Sugar

I can’t say I’m a massive fan of Lord Sugar but I find myself agreeing with the sentiments in his tweet.
I too, am sick to death of all the negativity re: the handling of Covid19 by the Press and TV News.
This Pandemic had been a Global disaster but we are going to come through it and the Government are, obviously, doing their very best in unprecedented recent times.

Buffybee Mon 18-May-20 12:01:12

Thanks Maizie ?
It’s just that people are desperate I think for some good news about this very frightening virus.
I’m scared and feel I won’t be comfortable going out until we have a vaccine.
I’m so chuffed I’ve opened another thread about it! ?

Janpt Mon 18-May-20 11:59:45

MayBee70 No, just know he's a better man for the job than Labour can offer.

MaizieD Mon 18-May-20 11:53:41

Resisting the urge to rain on your parade, Buffybee....?

Buffybee Mon 18-May-20 11:21:17

Well....some good news being reported at last and before anyone jumps down my throat, I know this has been reported before but we have now made significant headway with getting the Corona jab....fingers crossed.
Of course we know our wonderful scientists at Oxford and Imperial College have been working on and are carrying out trials but AstraZenica are going to start mass production now, in case it is found to work.
We could have a vaccine by some time around September and as most people realise, the only real way out of this Pandemic is a vaccine.
Our Government realise this and have already ploughed more than a quarter of a billion pounds into the search for the jab.
Well I for one think that’s wonderful news, not guaranteed, I know but there’s a very good chance.

BJ disagreeing with Cummings? Oh come on then he might have to think about things and not just spout what Dom tells him!

Dinahmo Mon 18-May-20 11:00:00

It would appear that the govt were very selective when selecting the medical advice that they were going to publish to the country in the daily briefings. Hardly surprising with Cummings being involved. So it's no wonder that the press take them to task. Piers Morgan is a good example with no political axe to grind - at least as far as the Tories are concerned.

Slightly reminiscent of the orange haired one over the pond - sacking his advisers when they disagree with him. At least BJ hasn't gone that far.

Lucca Mon 18-May-20 10:53:38

And no I dare say corbyn Might not have been that great. Irrelevant argument.

Lucca Mon 18-May-20 10:52:41

Enlighten me as to Boris and his bloody marvellousness ?
He is very good at three word slogans fist clenching and finger pointing i grant you.
Learning from experiences in other countries ? No
Taking quick preventative action ? No
Giving out 100% clear guidance ? No
Taking steps to actively enforce a proper lockdown ? No

trisher Mon 18-May-20 10:49:42

tickingbirdexposing once again the inability of some people to distinguish between political questioning and politically biased editorial content. It isn't questioning to post articles with bias. And yes some of what is written and published is sexist and racist amongst which is our dear PM's article referring to women in burkhas as "letter boxes" after which there was an increase in anti-islamic incidents www.pressgazette.co.uk/boris-johnson-telegraph-column-muslim-women-letterboxes-bank-robbers-spike-islamophobic-incidents/

tickingbird Mon 18-May-20 10:31:15

Just to add - that of course, then the press, are racist according to you Trisher.

tickingbird Mon 18-May-20 10:30:11

The press is there to ask the questions Joe Public would ask if we could

Except when they’re asking questions about Dianne Abbott’s suitability for her role or Meghan Markle’s behaviour. Eh Trisher?

Hypocrisy much??

trisher Mon 18-May-20 09:57:09

Not leading questions so they only get the bad answers that they wanted.
If everything is being done properly and in the best possible way how can there be any "bad" answers? If the answer to a question exposes the government's inadequacies that's hardly the journalist's fault.

notanan2 Mon 18-May-20 09:47:38

The press is there to ask the questions Joe Public would ask if we could. If you want feel good, fairy stories watch the Disney channel.

The press should be open to reporting either good or bad answers if it asks questions. Not leading questions so they only get the bad answers that they wanted.

Furret Mon 18-May-20 09:35:29

I find it best not to dwell on the past Janpt - I mean that kindly. Moving forward is the way to go. Never look back as Lot’s wife found to her cost.

Janpt Mon 18-May-20 09:05:34

Furret I do know that. I was referring to MaizieD's comment about someone competent.

Furret Sun 17-May-20 22:50:52

Try to keep up - Kier Starmer is leader of the LP now.

Janpt Sun 17-May-20 20:20:31

MaizieD Definitely not Corbyn then !!

MayBee70 Sun 17-May-20 20:20:06

I wouldn't have objected a dictatorial Thatcher type Conservative leader at the moment, to be honest. One that would tell people to social distance, wear masks etc etc. As it is we have an almost hippie type PM who believes that personal freedom should extend to people being able to infect themselves if they want to and infect everyone else as well. Lockdown has well and truly broken down where I am and we'll all be paying the price in a few weeks time. But because of the governments gaslighting it will all be 'our fault'.

MaizieD Sun 17-May-20 18:30:47

Would certainly have preferred to have someone competent...

MayBee70 Sun 17-May-20 18:26:48

And the point I'm trying to make is that both Australia and Gibraltar both seem to have dealt with the virus very well so, even if there have been lapses thousands of people don't seem to have died as a result. And the lapses you mention appear to be in areas that our government, thus far, haven't even covered.

lemongrove Sun 17-May-20 18:25:16

Buffy the difference is that here everything is politicised,
So from some quarters, nothing the government does is deemed good enough, even when it is!

Some would have preferred old you know who Salsa in charge ( that word is used loosely) although I hope they realise that nothing would have been done without many committee meetings, memos and possibly a month or so of
Decision debating.?

SalsaQueen Sun 17-May-20 18:17:19

Janpt Boris is doing the very best he can, in an extremely difficult situation. Perhaps some people would have preferred --Old Man Steptoe--Corbyn grin

Buffybee Sun 17-May-20 18:13:09

MayBee70, the point I was making is that my friends were both telling me how wonderfully their Governments were dealing with the virus and how strict the lockdowns, and how their airports had been closed down, then in the next sentence telling me their ex had just flown in from Jakarta.
Why do you not understand?
If I told you that we were all under strict lockdown apart from Key Workers, then told you my ex had just flown back into the country from Spain or Italy.
You would assume the lockdown was not so strict.
As I said, other countries like to advertise how well they are dealing with the virus, while our country just likes to advertise the worst of the situation.

trisher Sun 17-May-20 17:57:08

The press is there to ask the questions Joe Public would ask if we could. If you want feel good, fairy stories watch the Disney channel.
As for Boris being "bloody marvellous" I suppose he is in a way. A bit like Harry Houdini he manages to squirm out of every thing!!!

MayBee70 Sun 17-May-20 17:46:51

Methinks someone has a crush on Boris....
