I haven't read all the thread but I really cannot see why he should resign for this. He wasn't visiting his lover or his second home. His wife was ill and he must have realised that, with all around him dropping like flies and perhaps already having some possible symptoms he might be ill too. He had a young child and he went to where, as I understand it, siblings could help him. They were not, again as I understand it, going on a quick visit to grandparents. He legally needed to provide care for his child or you would all be tearing him to pieces or that.
If you were to ask if he should resign because he has to great an amount of unelected power then yes, I would agree he should. Just as I imagine others would do if the boot was on the other political foot in this instance.
I would just add that I hope the safeguarding clause was known to all those shut down in the early days. I am not sure it was. That doesn't stop me thinking it should exist.

Will he resign?
(1001 Posts)News breaking tonight that Dominic Cummings and his wife, when ill with Covid-19, put their child in the car and drove 260 miles from London to Durham so that they could isolate at his parent's place and his parents look after the child. This happened some time after 27th March. Remember lockdown was imposed on 23rd March.
Seen in his parent's garden with his child on 5th April.
Neil Fergusson resigned because his lover visited his house after lockdown.
Scotland's Chief Medical Officer had to resign after visiting her second home twice after lockdown.
Cummings and his wife drive 260 miles to stay with his parents (who must be in their 60s at the very least)... What will he do?

Story is in most of the MSM now.
She has sold her soul
to great too great
His wife was ill.
Was he? Only it's far from clear.
Well everyone on here - just use common sense in interpreting the rules to suit your own situation. Clear as mud I think, and so will many members of the public.
If it was fine gpfor him to have gone to where siblings/grandparents can help, then it should be the same for all.
Do not make laws for others, with the threat of fines if they break them, then proceed to break them yourself and say blatantly that you don't give a damn what others, who may have serious problems too, think about it.
There are more versions of the story as time goes by. This is classic Dom - create uncertainty, sow confusion, shift your position. If all else fails, lie. Laura K changed her tweets, there are several versions of what the police did, there’s the wife’s misleading accounts of what happened and a completed lack of people asking obvious questions. Cabinet ministers tweeting support , the AG saying breaking the law is absolutely fine, they view us with utter contempt and disdain - well the feeling’s mutual for many of us.
Apparently Cummings wife's sister lives in London. His aide is 2 streets away. More support than many would have in this situation.
It appears that having traveled 260 miles with his sick wife, Cummings, his wife and child moved into accommodation on his parents estate. Family members delivered their food.
Are we really supposed to believe that they could not have arranged for anyone to deliver food to their home in London?
After that shambolic no 10 briefing and the transport secretary struggling to defend the actions of Dominic Cummings I think he’ll be gone before the weekend is over.
It’s a slap in the face for so many who have suffered devastating circumstances while following the guidelines.
Unable to visit loved ones in hospital in their final hours and only a handful of family able to attend funerals.
It doesn't matter whether it was him or his wife that was ill when they broke the rules - one of them at least was infectious and therefore, as has been said, a danger to anyone else using the petrol stations or toilets that they could have used on the way north (and back south of course). The others who have resigned or faced serious criticism, like Catherine Calderwood and Prince Charles, were not ill when they travelled, and while they still broke the rules, they probably had less chance of causing anyone else to be infected.
I thought my contempt for DC was as deep as it could get - apparently not. Of course he won't resign - who would run the country if he did?
Like hell will he resign.
Far too up himself.
But all those who were fined for going further afield should be given their money back
Two faced bunch of overpaid w.....s
The arrogance and sense of entitlement is breathtaking. Johnson can’t take the moral high ground with his track record, so he’ll keep his job obviously, but the squirming of Grant Shapps, who also has some dubious dealings in the past, is sickening. My youngest GC needs looking after as his frazzled parents are finding it impossible to wfh with a toddler and no nursery even though one of them works for the NHS. They have asked for help - I’ve stuck to the rules till now, but now I’m going to change my stance and help them.
I cannot tell you how little this man's action's mean to me. We were warned back in March that safeguarding, might mean people could not always act as asked.
The guidelines state that for instance if you have children, not all the measures for someone suffering from symptoms may be followed. He has obeyed the guidelines.
Meanwhile, where is the concern about the unpreparedness of the Government and the way they treated the Care Homes, pushing them to one side with no regard for those living in them? Where is the concern for the total unpreparedness for a pandemic that put our front line NHS at risk when they were told a pandemic was the highest likely challenge to our lives? You could almost wonder if this has been set up to stop Starmer getting at the real issues the government needs to be challenged on.
Hopefully, the next PMQs will not be all about this man, whom many love to hate, but on the huge issues for which the government should be held to account.
I watched that press conference in despair. Did the two stooges standing in for the PM (who should have had the guts to be there in person) truly believe the garbage they spouted?
Nobody (no matter how important they think they are) should have travelled that distance knowing, or suspecting they might have Covid19. They were escaping London and if you or I had been caught doing so we would have been turned back.
He should resign or be sacked. Other more worthy people have fallen on their swords. If BJ doesn’t fire him then the government has lost all authority to lead the country.
Cummings MUST GO!
I always think DC looks furtive .
I doubt he will resign...but an apology would be welcome.
What beats me is....given that senior gov. ministers must have all kinds of “connections” and access to a wide circle of people who are in the childcare business-nurses, Childminders, nannies etc-why didn’t DC and wife stay at home whilst they were ill and find someone to look after their child?
If he gets away with this he will be untouchable. Please Boris wake up. SACK HIM.
he should be sacked, never mind resigning! his arrogance knows no bounds!
When Dr Calderwood the CMO for Scotland was seen visiting her second home 60 miles away she came to the daily briefing and admitted she was in the wrong and made a grovelling apology.
Nicola Sturgeon agreed the CMO had made a poor decision. She went on to state how much she valued her help and guidance etc and wished for her to continue her post behind the scenes. Hours later Dr Calderwood resigned.
BJ needs to come out of hiding and face the music. Cummings arrogance this afternoon towards reporters who dared to question him demonstrates he’s not going to resign unless he’s given a good shove
He has done untold harm to government policy as he has opened a discussion as to whether it should be followed. Its about time that Johnson takes charge, shows himself, sacks Cummings and gets this situation under control.
He has done an enormous amount of harm to the concept of isolation, and his servitude stinks.
Attitude!
Nicola Sturgeon told her CMO to resign, Grannynannywanny
I doubt DC will resign
I don't Boris will tell him to resign
Every time I try to type Boris, my phone wants me to type virus
*Doubt not don't 0_o
