The Jacob Rees-Mogg conga line was already an object of international ridicule, but the news that Alok Sharma, the business secretary, has self-isolated and been tested for coronavirus turns the government’s folly into a more serious setback.

It was Rees-Mogg’s stubborn attachment to parliamentary tradition that led to the long queue for MPs to vote in person. Most of it was socially distanced, but there was a bottleneck in the tunnel to the MPs’ offices across the road opposite Big Ben, where MPs were forced to be close to each other.

“World beating”: the phrase of 2020?

The continual need to “beat the world” is a sign not of strength but of weakness. Its flip side is a refusal to admit mistakes – to continue to insist that ministers made the “right decisions at the right time” and that plans are on track even when they patently are not.

Other, more mature and experienced governments seem more willing to admit that they got things wrong rather than keep on digging in.

We will be world beating for the rate at which we will fall down through the world rankings of wealthiest country ete etc. How long before we slip below 10th, or God forbid 20th?

"Global Britain" has turned its back on the EU, and all the countries like Japan that have good deals with the EU, and cannot to look to China for support so it seems mare and more likely that we will be dependent on Trump.

Scary isn't it.

Today at PMQs when Johnson was challenged on the government's flagrant neglect of the need to address the Russian threat to our security and our democracy he blustered and boasted that "no other country had done more"
