Trump scrapes the bottom of the barrel

I am astounded that no-one has commented on Trump’s crass and cynical photoshoot standing outside the church in Washington and brandishing a bible, having deployed guards using teargas to clear his way there. Not to mention dragging Melania along to the shrine of John Paul II for more photos when neither of them set foot in church from one month to the next. Surely any Christian should be outraged at his manipulation of their religion? Though apparently evangelical Christians think he’s doing a good job.(??????!!!!!)

I can't imagine him getting a second term

However I was watching Jeremy Vine earlier

Not sure where in USA the footage was filmed.

A small group of peaceful demonstrators were walking past some houses. There was a massive 'fence' that had been erected outside properties.

All the owners were stood there clutching machine guns and rifles and goodness knows what type of guns. Grim faced as the walkers past by.

Unbelievable

@travelsafar You just needed to watch some of the interviews held with his devotees. I think they were even scarier than Trump! Trump is a loud mouth bully, who gets away with it because he is so arrogant and utterly believes he can get away with anything. Anyone who disagrees with him is quickly branded a liar or fake. He gets by on big sound bites and creating chaos wherever he goes, so no-one can actually question him on any specifics. Unfortunately his twin got voted in over here in the UK, and he is as much as a disgrace as Trump.

Newatthis. Law of averages....probably but not admitting it..

Laurely Wed 03-Jun-20 14:22:17

Seems to me there's not much point posting about Trump. It's not as if he takes any notice when he is told directly what people think of his attitudes and actions. It's very hard to pray for him, I find.

darbycall Wed 03-Jun-20 14:40:43

as someone who lives n he USA I am repulsed, angered disgusted by his behavior on a daily basis. so many of us are. yet there remain a group who continue to support him, no matter what he says or does. I fear if he gets another 4 years it is the end of our democracy.

glammagran Wed 03-Jun-20 15:11:55

I read in a newspaper that a very frustrated presidential aide was quoted as saying everything written down and handed to Trump has to be in very simplistic language as in “See Jane Run” which most 5 year olds would not struggle with ?

Bluecat Wed 03-Jun-20 16:13:59

It's hard to imagine how the situation in the USA will ever be resolved, but Donald Trump won't be the one to do it.

There were gunshots outside my DD's house in Madison, Wisconsin, at night when people were protesting downtown. They didn't know whether the protest had spilled over, or if people were taking advantage of the police being elsewhere, but they were scared. My DD's boyfriend called and offered to fetch her to his house, where they had guns to protect her. (His father and brother hunt.) She declined, but you can see how things will escalate if people get frightened and think they need to shoot to protect their families. In the area where my DD lives, near the university, she says the local non-white residents seem to be one black man, a Korean lady and her. A black person would immediately be noticed but, as it is a "nice" area, people probably wouldn't openly react. In the place where she used to live, equally upmarket, equally white but far less liberal, if a black person suddenly appeared in the neighbourhood, some of the residents would be reaching for their guns. Racial divisions are visible and deep-rooted. It is going to to take far, far better people than Trump to heal the divide.

Many have an unshakable sense of superiority, in a country that was built on slavery, but also a visceral fear of black people. Those people want to see Trump using violence, including a militarised response, against the protestors. It will gain him votes and he knows it. He is unlikely to do the right things such as try to build unity, involve leaders from the black community, institute reforms, etc. Instead he is fanning the flames.

Of course, all this is against the background of the pandemic. Black people have suffered disproportionately. Maybe due to poverty, bad housing, front line jobs and lack of access to health care. The system there is brutal, because there is no safety net like the NHS or Universal Credit (inadequate though it is.) DD says that the hostility to universal healthcare is baffling. Where we love the NHS, they get angry at the idea of such a system in the USA. DD says they seem personally offended if you talk about it.

So you've got people with a history of being oppressed, with no proper healthcare when a virus is killing them, unemployed or in danger of losing jobs and homes, watching a white policeman slowly murder a black man... And their president says that their outburst of rage and frustration is due to "the radical left" and "anti-fascists." The man has no empathy, no leadership qualities, no sense of duty and precious little humanity.

Looks like it could be a long, dangerous summer in the USA. From the perspective of the American ethnic minorities, I doubt they will get justice and equality. From my own point of view, I wish my family wasn't there.

God's will - bloody hell!

"Many have an unshakable sense of superiority, in a country that was built on slavery, but also a visceral fear of black people." So tragic.
Very good post Bluecat. Quote above sums it up for me.
Americans might speak the same language as we do but are so different in many ways.
Although Europe was where the slave trade started.

Democracy will remain under threat no matter who is in power.
It is hard work, requiring people to respect those with different views from theirs. It asks citizens to be able to sift through large amounts of information and process the good from the bad, the true from the false. It also requires thoughtfulness, discipline and logic.
Over time, we have seen politicians, parties and governments have become less responsive to a broad cross-section of citizens.
Democracy is, by definition, as we know, “rule by the people”.

Jishere Wed 03-Jun-20 16:46:57

Bluecat that must be a worry for you although you write it is a nicer area.
I watched a document about the segregation of black and white proms in Georgia and a white girl/ boyfriend could go to the black prom but not the other way round. The first intergrated prom was 2012, I mean what a society!!!!

Another story emerged from this document about a man and his wife who had adopted a relatives baby, she is black they are white but that's irrelevant until at 16 she brings friends home at 3am in the morning. Her dad goes mad and shoots one of the black lads dead. He gets a year in prison.
Yesterday I read about the argument at a supermarket over parking in a disabled spot with no chance to run the black man gets shot.

I had this debate with a yoga teacher who put up photos of herself lieing down like a sniper firing a big gun that this isn't the way forward but she and many of her followers believe they have a right to protect themselves but across the board if Trump keeps allowing guns then hot tempered/unstable people will keep using them to cause more destruction and misery.

NotSpaghetti Wed 03-Jun-20 16:47:01

Bluecat, I also have family there. The reports I've been receiving are as you say.

My family don't have guns but have been invited to a friend's house "if they find they need to" - he is also a hunter.

NotSpaghetti Wed 03-Jun-20 16:57:12

I read a really interesting article which was written by an ex trump supporter. He had campaigned for trump and recruited others to the campaign team.

Now he feels very differently after deaths and the idea of "bleaching" to get rid of Covid-19. He felt the anti-science was now hurting people and he could no longer go along with the Trump agenda. He said that it was with reluctance he finally had to accept what the anti-trump people were saying about him, that all he wants is power and he makes things up to suit himself etc.

The writer says he was now struggling to explain his personal transformation to others and the reason why (he thought) was that trump's supporters are basically stuck in a cult. The cult of Trump.

It made such a lot of sense. I wish I could find it as it was an interesting piece.

If anyone else read it and knows where, please could you post a link?

rosecarmel Wed 03-Jun-20 17:09:32

I believe the bible photo op was possibly orchestrated by his daughter Ivanka- I don't feel bad for his family, they're all on the same financial gains page- They want for nothing, other than more of what they already have- And they get it-

Bluecat Wed 03-Jun-20 17:16:19

One of the problems seems to be that, because of guns, every confrontation is potentially a matter of life and death. Not in the George Floyd case, or other killings where the victim is already helpless, but in situations where people want to get their shot in first.

When my DD's family were visiting the UK in January, they witnessed a ferocious argument between a cyclist and a car driver. DD told me that they all instinctively froze, in case it turned into a shooting. They knew people weren't likely to be armed here but it was an automatic response. Of course, the cyclist and driver just yelled at each other and went their separate ways. How many people in the USA must get shot dead out of anger and fear?

rosecarmel Wed 03-Jun-20 17:33:59

Bluecat, not to shift the subject, but your point is clear-

As a result of the pandemic, many, many more people are out and about on these rural roads that have no sidewalks-
Families out walking, cyclists, runners, walking dogs, so on-

Now that the state is opening back up, people want to drive like they did prior to the pandemic- Not offering courtesy, not wanting to share the road- Its dangerous-

I've been ridiculed for wearing a mask, and stared down, with utter disgust, by others not wearing them-

Tensions are escalating-

The reason Trump is opposing postal votes is that many of the underprivileged minorities live as far as 100 miles from polling stations, also some states won't allow people without street & number address (which applies to Native Americans they often have only po box addresses) to vote at all, a massive loss of potential Democratic voters.

earnshaw Wed 03-Jun-20 20:29:45

thinking about it in another way, the officers who committed the offences have been arrested to stand trial, difficult to know how to control a large mob,

Fellow gransnet members, I stumbled upon this group while looking for hairstyles for women over 50, which led to jeans for women over 50, and eventually to this group. I enjoyed reading posts and comments very much in the beginning. But lately I have read many rude and insulting comments about my President, but let them pass. But this time I will not let them pass. With all due respect, none of you have a clue of what is going on here. No clue. I am sure you are getting your information from the same dishonest media we have here in the states, who have done everything in their power to discredit our President since day one. They hate him and are hellbent on getting him out.( Scriptures says if you hate someone, you have committed murder in your heart.) Why, you ask? Because there is a liberal left agenda in this country who care nothing for the American people and their Constitutional rights, and only care for "The New World Order." What stands between these two? Our great President! That's who! A man who loves this country and the American people. Do you know the individuals in our congress? Do you know they have all become multi millionaires and billionaires while holding public office to serve the people? None of you have a clue and you are being lied to by the media. Trump did not order tear gas. That is a lie! Look at the photos. Do you see any officers wearing gas masks? Not only you, but the American people are lied to day in and day out by the media! You also do not understand what is happening with these riots. These people are paid to riot by George Soros, organizations supported by the Clintons, and other far left organizations. We hear the term "New World Order" by people like Chicago's mayor and others in leadership. These rioters are not from the cities where they are actually causing damage. They are transported to these cities to cause major destruction and fear. Do you know young children, an 18 month old in one case, are being hit by stray bullets in their homes during these riots? NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO DO WHAT THEY ARE DOING IN THIS COUNTRY- I DONT CARE WHAT HAPPENED OR WHO DIED. Do you know that blacks are killed by other blacks every weekend in Chicago and no one protests that? No marches for those killed in Chicago. This is all planned for some group's agenda and mission to destroy our country. AND TO CLARIFY for all of you, it was Obama who started the division between races, not Trump. Trump has clearly said there will be justice for George Floyd. Didn't your media play that clip for you? You should read up on Trump and all the humanitarian things he has done. You would be ashamed of yourselves for what you have said about the man. You don't understand that blacks and racism are being used to divide our country and let us destroy ourselves from within. Peaceful, law-abiding citizens deserve to be protected by either law enforcement or the National Guard. Already today, there is a post of "protests" happening in two towns close to where I live. They are right next door, very close to me. This rioting should have been nipped in the bud the first night. Democratic mayors told our police to stand down as violence began to erupt. Why? While you sit in lock down judging others in your community for living their lives, don't let your mind run rampant with judgement on my country when you have no idea what is really happening here. We have serious spiritual warfare going on. Instead of judging what you can never understand, please pray for us. Time for me to leave this group. I wish you all the best of health. Thank you.

Furret Wed 03-Jun-20 21:11:38

Go!

Furret Wed 03-Jun-20 21:14:29

And there folks you have it - the reason that the likes of Trump managed to get elected.

jerseygirl Wed 03-Jun-20 21:21:12

This man is an idiot. He is adding fuel to the fire and making things worse. Lets hope he doesn't get into office again at the end of the year.

Grannynannywanny Wed 03-Jun-20 21:21:23

tiggermu389 I’ve read through your long post. Unless I’ve missed it you don’t appear to have an opinion on why a police officer knelt on a man’s neck for 9 minutes and watched him die.

Iam64 Wed 03-Jun-20 21:22:54

Yes, our questions about how someone as dangerous and deluded at Trump can get elected and stay in post, all answered in the long and equally deluded post above.

SueDonim Wed 03-Jun-20 21:35:27

Looks like the Kool-Aid is being doled out!
