The Daily Mail guns for Bannon and his toxic links with Johnson, Farage and Leave. It is right - but a pivotal moment in UK media politics. Johnson is in terminal trouble. Steve Bannon's Brexit links: Indicted aide is Nigel Farage ally

Brexit Re-booted
(599 Posts)Whilst we have all been busy with C19, Brexit has been still in the background, so I thought as a break from C19 I would start up Brexit again??
Latest gossip/leak
Liz Truss has written to Johnson warning him that his border plans “ risk smuggling, damage to the U.K. reputation and WTO wrath who may well launch a legal challenge over the plan to phase in customs and health checks Over 6 months.
Something else that’s going to run and run.
Negotiations with the EU are due to end 31 October.
Leaked official documents reveal a no deal Brexit risks shortages of food, fuel and medicines this winter.
This doomsday scenario is totally avoidable. The Government must pull the country back from the brink of no deal and focus on tackling this pandemic.

I know some people do not set a lot of store by polls, but I thought I'd check out the many Brexit poll questions collated by an independent organisation.
Since May 2017, in answer to the question or similar "Would you vote to stay in the EU or leave", the stats show a preference to remain in the EU. The percentages vary a little but I could not see anywhere that the leave number rose higher than the remain number. So 3 years later, we're still having to go through something that will not bring any benefits to the ordinary citizen and so many do not want.
Please don't quote "That's Democracy" to me. This isn't an general election where we can rethink and change our vote now 4 years have passed.
What has been shown is the utter incompetence of this Tory government to do anything other than feather their and their friends nests after getting rid of the more moderate conservatives.
Also, don't tell me the Tories got a majority in the election. What you're forgetting is the number of votes cast against them was larger than the number for them.
Sometimes, the best thing to do to stop a really bad situation becoming a disaster is to admit the decision was a mistake and try to limit the fallout. I won't hold my breath.
I see Sunak has had to shelve plans for his “Facebook tax”
USA is insisting.
They say jump, we say “how high”
It’s called taking back control???
I see that the Cornish who voted for brexit are now demanding that the government pay the £700 million they will be losing as a result.
Excuse my hollow laugh!
Of course it is Barnier's fault, and the EU, that the UK has renaged on the basic terms negotiated and agreed, and voted upon - with Johnson at the helm - slightly worse than Mrs May's terms - but he said it was the best since sliced bread, or something. The UK has been shown and proven to be totally untrustworthy and totally 2 faced. So Cummings and co better not try that one- and the DM and Express should know better. We will not buy their rubbish.
Project fear they said.
Does not bear thinking about

People in Sunderland are now up in arms about Nissan pulling out. Something they were told could happen if we left the EU.
They were told that it was "project fear"
What a tragedy that they believed that propaganda by the brexit brigade who never ever had their interests at heart.
This is going to go down as the biggest con ever pulled on the British people.
The pennies are beginning to be dropped

Does anybody actually know what's happening with Ireland? I've tried to follow the story, but got lost.
Will there be customs restrictions between NI and the Republic? If not, will there be checks between NI and and UK? If neither, what's to stop smuggling between the Republic and the UK?
And what's happening in Gibraltar?
Well, Johnson has said that there will be no border down the middle of the Irish Sea, so that can only mean a border between north and south doesnt it?
But I thought that was against international law?
Not that this lot take any notice of the rule of law.
Anarchists!!
I suspect that in practice NI will remain in the EU a bit? and there will have to be a border of sorts between us and them, which will drive the unionists mad.
Actually I haven’t a clue???
The Government is preparing for power outages, economic chaos and public unrest if a second wave of coronavirus coincides with a disorderly no-deal Brexit, according to leaked emergency plans.
A classified Powerpoint presentation delivered to ministers warns of food and fuel shortages around Christmas if lorries get stuck at Dover, while 1,500 soldiers are already on standby – ready to hit the streets to help police deal with potential disorder.
The document put together by the Cabinet Office’s EU Transition Task Force also warns of price hikes, power outages, water rationing and animal disease tearing through the countryside due to a shortage of medicines.

I'm shocked that this govt is so arrogant that it hasn't bothered to cover up the contract handed out to friends and family. They must be aware that an increasing number of the population know about these but they just don't give a toss.
Problem is, Dinahmo, most of the population doesn't give a toss, either.
Have you seen a squeak of protest on here from the Johnson supporters? No? Me neither.
The only protests they make are when we dare to criticise their hero for taking his fifth holiday of the year...
And the tories are still polling ahead of Labour.

Not by a lot though 2% last time I looked and that has dropped from 25% in April, so I do think people are beginning to understand how much competence matters and how little if any there is in this government.
Gibraltar is a tax haven for online gambling outfits from which the U.K. government benefits. No doubt the rest of the U.K. can turn into a money laundering haven now we don’t have to follow the pesky EU anti corruption regulations.
The Russians find us useful for that already.
The Tories benefit from the Russians as well.
I thought this pretty much sums brexit up
Brexit is circular insanity. But it’s also steeped in vindictiveness. There’s a callous disregard for the harm it does to others. There’s a desperate wish for the EU to fail. There’s such a meanness to it, you’d be ashamed of it by now..... if you were a decent person.
Yes - three years ago how many on here were crowing that all the other countries were envious of us? ( just because they once spoke to a taxi driver in Rome or somewhere) That jibe seems to have quietened down. I don’t think any countries in the EU are envious of us and our small island mentality.
I have just been reading the results of a survey on the EU carried out during 2018 by the Pew Research Center, a Washington based, non partisan think tank. The survey covers a wide range of topics, including the role of the UK, France and Germany in the EU, the economy, immigration, refugees etc.
The median rating of favourable views for the EU was 62% whereas it was lower for the Commission and the EU Parliament. (48% for the Commission and 50% for the Parliament). I don't think that the ratings for the governance of the EU would be a surprise to anyone but the popularity of the EU itself suggests to me that the people hoped that improvements could be made.
It is a sadness to me that the people of the UK could not see that we could have helped in making the necessary changes. I don't think that they realised how important to the EU we once were, albeit many years ago, and the opportunities that have been wasted.
