Whilst we have all been busy with C19, Brexit has been still in the background, so I thought as a break from C19 I would start up Brexit again??

Latest gossip/leak

Liz Truss has written to Johnson warning him that his border plans “ risk smuggling, damage to the U.K. reputation and WTO wrath who may well launch a legal challenge over the plan to phase in customs and health checks Over 6 months.

Something else that’s going to run and run.

Negotiations with the EU are due to end 31 October.

I have quietened down about Brexit. Not because I’m dreading it or think I voted wrongly.

I’m just quietly happy it’s actually happening and I don’t want to come over as crowing. I’m not jingoistic.

Besides which all the to-ing and fro-ing about the subject can get a tad repetitive!

I wish Europe well just without us.
I’m not a mean spirited person.
I just don’t like the E.U.

The reality in Ireland is going to be the best of both worlds north and south. Ulster will effectively be in the EU, Eire will take any advantages the north offers, much as they do now and I guess that will suit them both.

Quite interested in what sort of brexit you would like

Whitewavemark2 Tue 25-Aug-20 15:06:14

I assume you don’t want it to be a no deal brexit

Has ANYBODY in government really understood the chaos, the shambles that is going happen at British ports if there is a no deal Brexit? Staff: not recruited. Border posts: not built. Lorry parks: not enough and not completed. Paperwork: not printed, not issued, nobody trained.

MayBee70 Tue 25-Aug-20 15:10:21

Given that the army seem to be on standby I assume some people in government realise what it’s going to be like. No deal brexit, pandemic and probably floods as well this winter. Just what it said on the bus.

Let's not try to overwhelm Ug with facts, ladies.

UG never reads facts? whatever gave you that idea!

MayBee70 Tue 25-Aug-20 16:06:16

Doesn’t affect her anyway if she isn’t in the UK.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 25-Aug-20 16:13:44

I assume that when we crash out if the EU in January, all Brexiters will Volunteer to be in the back of the queue for medicines, food and jobs.

89% of people on twitter think that is what should happen.

MaizieD Tue 25-Aug-20 16:22:38

89% of people on twitter think that is what should happen.

Only in your twitter bubble, Wwmk2.

!00% of Brexiters say that that would be unfair as it's not their fault. hmm

vegansrock Tue 25-Aug-20 16:27:57

Can’t you feel the excitement ? All those Brexit voters ( well the ones that are still with us) getting all in a tizz thinking of all the wonderful benefits they will be enjoying....

vegansrock Tue 25-Aug-20 16:29:32

Brexit voters should definitely be first in the queue for all the Brexit benefits ... let me think now....hmmm ...And maybe they should volunteer to pay the extra costs?

Urmstongran Tue 25-Aug-20 17:31:20

I am a resident of the U.K. Maybee. We pay our taxes there.

Quote of the Day
“The last three weeks will matter more than the first three years.”

David Davis, the UK's first ever Brexit secretary, gives his take on the importance of the latest stage of negotiations with the EU.

To the wire it seems!
Let’s all hope (I do) for A Deal.

Urmstongran Tue 25-Aug-20 17:38:15

Today in the Brexit Bulletin (The Daily Telegraph - behind a paywall):

“The problem, they argue, is the EU’s failure to understand that they are dealing with a fundamentally different administration to the one led by Theresa May.

As one source put it over the weekend: “When talking to the previous government, the EU were dealing with a negotiating team that may have wanted Brexit in name only, with minimal changes.

“That is clearly not the case now. The EU needs to realise that we are not up for continuing previous arrangements: when they understand that, it will be much easier to make progress.”

In other words, Mr Johnson’s team really do believe that “Brexit means Brexit”, and intend to deliver it, deal or no deal.”

biba70 Tue 25-Aug-20 17:51:42

So why did Johnson do a Deal, worse than Mrs May's- present it to the House, got it passed and signed it then? What was that all about if not totally dishonest?

varian Tue 25-Aug-20 17:52:46

Do you think perhaps, in spite of the talk of "easiest negotiation in history" and "oven-ready deal" that they have always been headed for "no-deal" because that is what suits those who pull the strings?

Dinahmo Tue 25-Aug-20 17:57:07

Varian Yes. Those who pull the strings were opposed to the changes to tax regulations brought in by the EU in January. From what I recall the EU were going after the international corporations and those offshore. The proprietors of the right wing msm and JRM for example.

varian Tue 25-Aug-20 18:01:04

So the so-called negotiations have been a sham.

The Brexiters still insist that we must have all the benefits of EU membership, but without paying the membership fee or abiding by the rules.

Negotiation doesn't work like that, especially when those on the other side of the table have the stronger hand.

Urmstongran Tue 25-Aug-20 18:21:16

Many European countries are not happy with M. Barnier’s negotiating tactics. There will be pressure from within the EU yet.

It’s not over till the fat lady sings.

Who says?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 27-Aug-20 07:49:59

Germany has said that the U.K. has made such little progress in the negotiations that it isn’t bothering to to discuss brexit at a planned diplomatic meeting.

We are heading for a no deal and just watch Johnson try to pin it on Brussels, as the full realisation of a no deal hits home after December.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 27-Aug-20 07:59:11

I see that Australia have been successful in almost off- loading the misogynist and gaff prone Tony Abbott.

A former High Commissioner stated that the U.K. hiring Abbot makes as much sense as Australia hiring Williamson to sort out its education. Abbott is that bad.

Anyone surprised at this incompetent choice?

Urmstongran Thu 27-Aug-20 08:47:09

I suppose Abbott will be giving his views. Not a bad thing really - how to steer Brexit through No Deal. Australia has negotiated many individual ones with other countries so he must have some insight to have been approached.

The EU will be missing their ‘big hitter’ Big Phil Hogan from Ireland in their negotiating team. They will miss him now he’s resigned.
