CAREN Act To Stop Racially Motivated Police Calls Proposed By California Lawmaker
(241 Posts)www.ladbible.com/news/weird-caren-act-to-stop-racially-motivated-911-calls-proposed-20200709?fbclid=IwAR0skM_QqKY5tjb45I0e6rhJ-v5qhGOFDzXwADi0FLtbS6l6lpUoFbRdJMQ
A new law proposed by a lawmaker in California is aimed at stopping people from making racially motivated calls to the police.
It's been proposed by San Francisco Supervisor Shamann Walton, and is called the 'CAREN' act, which stands for Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies.
Recently there has been a large uptick in incidents during which white women call the police to make reports against people of colour who they claim have made them feel uncomfortable while they're going about their daily business.
These people have become known colloquially as 'Karens'.
Calls to police can put the subject of those frivolous 911 contacts in danger of arrest for a crime they haven't committed, or an interaction with the police that could otherwise have been avoided.
Just recently, Amy Cooper called the police on a man who was birdwatching in a New York park because he'd asked her if she could put her dog onto a leash.
Then, closer to where the law is being proposed, Jennifer Schulte called the police when she saw two black men having a barbecue in a park.
A woman also threatened to call the cops on a man for stenciling 'Black Lives Matter' in chalk on his own house.
This new law aims to punish those who think they can use the police to intimidate people of colour who have done nothing wrong.
Walton argues that the proposed measures 'are part of a larger nationwide movement to address racial biases and implement consequences for weaponizing emergency resources with racist intentions'.
It's similar to a bill put forward by California State Assembly member Rob Bonta that calls for people who use law enforcement in a way that is biased towards people for their race, class, appearance, or religion.
Speaking about that piece of legislation, Bonta said: "This bill could protect millions of Californians from becoming targets of hate and prevent the weaponization of our law enforcement against communities of colour."
Let's hope that it makes a difference.
Then treat it as the seperate issue it is, that's all I'm saying. Don't use it to detract from another systematic institutionalised issue that has been ongoing for most of known history.
Do something about it. Contact the person responsible, tell them to find a way to change it to CARE or whatever else it could be.
Also support BLM in whatever way you can
Issues, society has many
I don't recall anyone on this forum protesting Essex girl jokes. Some on here upset about Karenism were not supportive of BLM. But they protest something as minor as a certain type of woman (entitled, selfish) being labelled because it applies to their demographic.
As I said, I'm sympathetic to their hurt feelings but the acronym typifies a stereotype, with a slight basis in truth.
I fit the Karen category but know I don't share those traits. Therefore, not worried about it on a personal level.
Chewbacca
I've no idea where, or by whom, the term originally came from Starblaze; I just think, as do others apparently, that it's a needlessly negative and destructive way of addressing a very important problem. What is the point of deliberately manufacturing division and blame in a whole section of society that is as blameless, or as much to blame, as any other? What purpose does it serve apart to create resentment and "othering"?
I'm not sure what your reference to white people caragorising a "type of person" who likes to complain to the management. means in this context, I'm sorry.
I do like your point about division and blame Chewbacca. But it's the ticket our current government used to get into power while the party that typified solidarity were roundly castigated. We are going further and further down this right wing path, and as an inveterate leftie, I've given up hope of things improving in my lifetime.
Typo! Not were, was
Don't give up GagaJo I think we are seeing the last hurrah of the right and that's why it's so LOUD. I think the balance is going to permanently tip the other way soon
Thanks GagaJo. I just don't think that creating yet more division within sections of the populace, is healthy or productive way to achieve anything positive across the whole of society. It's just so counterproductive.
I honestly doubt that there will be hard shift to the left to be honest, mainly because those that hold the purse strings are very definitely to the right. But I do think that there is a more equally balanced society in the making. Little steps....

How do you know anybody is not a supporter of BLM?
Just because they haven’t said so here? Is that obligatory now?
Not protesting about Essex girl jokes? (PS as an English teacher you will be aware of the difference between “to protest” in this sense not being a transitive verb and needing a pronoun and “to protest” , meaning say firmly that something is true eg “she protested her innocence”)
Anyway, to continue...
<whisper>Perhaps because there haven’t been any?
Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t castigate anybody for what they have not said - or are the thought police out in force?
And as for Starblaze’s comment about “the Right” - don’t make me laugh.
Somebody will be along in a minute no doubt to blame it on Brexit ????
In happy to stand by what I think of things, I don't need to argue it, it will happen or it won't. I've got a good 30 odd years in me (hopefully)
I am left wing so its not the last hurrah of the right. It's been quite a shock to this leftie to discover the outright misogyny of parts of the left. So no I wont collude or ignore it.
I've ways been more of a moderate, left leaning

I'm neither "leftie", nor "right" but the misogyny and ageism that's been displayed on GN recently has been breathtakingly awful. And some of the worst culprits have been those who have shouted the longest and loudest for parity and equality for minority groups. Is it because they are so tunnelled visioned and blinkered that they can only focus on one area of injustice and unfairness in society? It's the arrogance of some people, who really seem to believe that only they truly understand inequality and unfairness in society, whilst happily creating the same tensions in others; they really do irritate me.

And your point is?
Not making a point MawB are you?

Not making a point MawB are you?
Well yes
Wondering what your last 2 posts have to do with anything let alone this thread. But whatever.
Oh dear, careful you don't take anyone's eye out with it

Callistemon
Why not call them Rosecarmels?
Isn't Carmel in California?Or simply American -- as previously suggested- Since they are one in the same-
Which suggests all Karens are the same- As well as all African Americans-
I suppose if people have small feet they don't mind habitually sticking them in their mouth ..I think you've got my point rosecarmel!!
Like calling Gransnetters boomers when many are not.
Who called gransnetters boomers?
rosecarmel
Callistemon
I think they're on a losing streak here, Gagajo
Sorry.
Calling these people "Karen" was a big mistake by whoever decided it was a good idea.
It will antagonise more people than will be sympathetic, unfortunately.
Let what goes on in America should stay in America.
If it should start over here then I hope anyone rying it will be charged with wasting police time.Ok, boomer-
Erm you did?
Ok, boomer means Ok, boomer- Not all gransnetters- Clearly- ? Nice try tho ..
Oh dear, careful you don't take anyone's eye out with it
What does that even mean?

Why would you think that?
‘The last hurrah of the right’......where, who? This sounds like a newspaper soundbite, can you explain what you mean?

Ok, boomer means Ok, boomer- Not all gransnetters- Clearly- ? Nice try tho ..
So who?
I love a good debate, even when it ends up that I am wrong, I've learned something.
However, if people in a discussion are focused on twisting what I say or assigning meaning to my words that aren't there, or just generally looking for ways to shut me down personally it becomes pointless for me.
I'm just chatting, not waving around points like sharp sticks
Its a shame *shrug
