Leavers. Were you absolutely clear that a no deal Brexit would mean job losses?

Because Andrea Leadsome says that it was made clear before the referendum.

Now. it might be the forgetfulness of old age but I don't even remember anything about 'no deal' Brexit until T May brought up the subject, post referendum.

So, this is not a 'stirring' question but a plea for information.

a) Did you even contemplate 'no deal'?

and

b), if you did, were you clear that it would mean job losses?

Here she is:

Do you know what? Some of you holy Joe’s berate on other threads about ‘entitled well offs’ at times for buying food from say Waitrose or using more expensive independent butchers saying how can people on UC afford that or ‘look at the shocking need for foodbanks’ etc and then, in the next breath, your up in arms about cheaper food being made available - chlorinated chicken anyone as opposed to organic - there’s no pleasing you really!

vegansrock Tue 14-Jul-20 08:04:22

Lower food and welfare standards
More expensive food from our closest market
An oven ready deal without any ingredients ( or an oven)

With luck Trump will get booted out and the negotiations will have to begin again with a more enlightened USA government, who understand the Irish situation and will intervene to stop any potential future violence and uphold the international agreement that this government don’t seem to think matters.

But what actually does matter to this government apart from flouting rules and making loads of money?

Furret Tue 14-Jul-20 07:54:34

Very well I hear. Chlorinate chickens and hormonal beef coming soon to the British table. Yum yum!

Whitewavemark2 Tue 14-Jul-20 07:53:56

ug you clearly haven’t visited lorry parks either.

I get it now!! There you sit in your holiday home - nothing wrong with that- good on you I say.

But I think that what has happened is that you are losing touch with reality, particularly with what is happening and going to happen as a result of Brexit.

Riverwalk Tue 14-Jul-20 07:49:17

Let's not be too pessimistic now.

Don't forget all those lovely trade deals that Dr Liam Fox promised us with the USA and the BRICS countries - you know that dynamic trading block of Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa.

I wonder how those negotiations are going?

MaizieD Tue 14-Jul-20 07:22:48

Framilode's list isn't snobbish, it's realistic. Low paid, low status jobs. Probably contracted out to Serco, or one of these companies with no previous experience but with friends in high places which have been the recent beneficiaries of billions of pounds worth of public money. Companies paying the minimum to their workers and the maximum to their shareholders.

I'm sure the good people of Ashford are overjoyed at the prospect.

vegansrock Tue 14-Jul-20 07:20:02

This is all rather nostalgic isn't it, thinking back to 'Project Fear' that is.
Remember the good old days when jolly Brexiters used to laugh at we Remainers, sorry, remoaners, for even contemplating the possibility of any downside to leaving? Oh what fun they had.
What was more, we were talking Britain down weren't we. Accusations of treason were bandied about. We hated our country, I never did understand that argument.
I also recall the changes as the withdrawl negotiations 'progressed' and it became obvious even to Brexiters that this wasn’t going well. Being poorer was what Leavers had voted for. Car workers knew that they would lose their jobs but some things were more important than a good, secure income. I believe it was a Tory MP in a safe seat who said that. Never mind car workers in Sunderland - jobs going as parking attendants in Kent which is becoming one big lorry park - contracts for building to Tory donors natch. We were also told every other country in Europe was envious of us - laughing at us more like. We really are becoming a corrupt banana republic.

vegansrock Tue 14-Jul-20 06:22:06

New “opportunity” ?

Furret Tue 14-Jul-20 06:21:31

Some of us can distinctly recall Boris Johnson and Michael Gove reassuring the country back in 2016 that not only would the UK retain access to the single market after Brexit, but that we’d also end up with a better deal.

Urmstongran Tue 14-Jul-20 06:12:35

That sounds snobbish Framilode! Surely paid work as a clerk or car park attendant is decent enough work putting money in the bank for some? So many jobs will be lost to C-19 (all over Europe) that this new opportunity will be a godsend for some.

Framilode Mon 13-Jul-20 21:36:57

The lorry park jobs will be parking attendants, custom clerks, burger van assistants, toilet cleaners, prostitutes and litter cleaners. I expect they will be queuing up in Ashworth for a chance for one of these jobs.

vegansrock Mon 13-Jul-20 21:14:11

So basically the costs of the customs checks alone will be about 13bn a year in perpetuity, before we factor in all the infrastructure, staff and IT systems etc
Uncannily that's roughly what the Brexit campaign said we were 'wasting' by paying for EU membership. Kent being turned into a concrete lorry park costing ££££££s
Plus the latest bonkers advertising campaign is several weeks money promised to the NHS.
We were promised a great deal.
Anyone who knew they were voting for this definitely deluded.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Jul-20 19:59:17

Kandinsky yes, but no deal - if any yet, still transition until 31/12

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Jul-20 19:58:07

ug oh you are a card, living in your happy land. You obviously haven’t seen the local news. People, including the Tory MP are incensed.

sussex that is not what I said was it? But post 1/1 will bring another whammy to our economy and undoubtedly leave U.K. will blame everything else but the rotten deal they have negotiated.

Brexiters know the truth but will never admit to it. It is a disaster heaped upon a disaster.

Kandinsky Mon 13-Jul-20 19:49:01

Haven’t we left the EU already?

lost track tbh.

vegansrock Mon 13-Jul-20 19:47:38

Well we don’t like it. We don’t want to lower our food and welfare standards and poodle up to Trump, which is what Brexit is about. Apart from getting rid of furriners.

Urmstongran Mon 13-Jul-20 19:44:33

Actually, the giant lorry park in Kent will bring in jobs and money. People of Kent must be getting all excited now that Brexit is so near.

Sussexborn Mon 13-Jul-20 19:43:48

Are you seriously suggesting that we would be thriving despite COVID if only we had stayed in the EU, WW?

Sussexborn Mon 13-Jul-20 19:40:38

Maisie: Give it a rest with your constant goading and bullying tones to Urmstongran. When she finds her crystal ball she’ll let you know what the future will bring. You come across as ill wishing everyone and desperately hoping things will go badly. You’ll be gutted if all goes well once things settle down, won’t you?

25Avalon Mon 13-Jul-20 19:30:44

WW2 my daughters often say to me when they disagree with me “In your opinion”

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Jul-20 19:26:52

Remember project fear - that Brexiters loves to bandy about?

Now they have the glorious excuse of Coved19.

They know it isn’t true, but it is too embarrassing to admit that they have made the most awful boo boo.

Urmstongran Mon 13-Jul-20 19:21:28

There's no way back from Brexit. That's the political reality, whether you like it or not.

varian Mon 13-Jul-20 19:14:21

Vote Leave government to spend hundreds of millions of pounds on euphemistic ways of saying 'We Lied'

Framilode Mon 13-Jul-20 19:11:30

As far as I can see there is very little to be positive about.
