More immigrants crossing the Channel

You should apply when you arrive in the UK or as soon as you think it would be unsafe for you to return to your own country.

I don’t hate anybody. I just wish people would go through the legal channels to apply to live here.

I agree Urmstongran I have no objection to anyone coming to live,work and contribute to the UK but coming over the channel in a boat having paid a people smuggler to do so or arriving on our shores and disappearing into the night is not the right way to do it. I'm sick of all the racist remarks, racist because we voted Brexit. When they don't like what you are saying or can't stand hearing the truth that's their stock reply calling and playing the racist card.

The fact is that most migrants are not Assylum Seekers they are Economic Migrants wanting a better life, many do come from countries where there is a lack of security, or freedom. That includes about 3/4 of nations where if you are an opposition activist or the wrong tribe it can be very hard for you.

The UK does have an immigration policy where large numbers of overseas workers are allowed to travel, we want to select the individuals that will benefit the UK. If we had an open door we would certainly be overwhelmed by numbers.

Genuine Assylum seekers should seek help in protected areas in or near their home country, we and other nations do far too little in this respect.

As for the EU rejecting our proposals, no surprises there, just another unrealistic “cherry picking” idea that had no chance of acceptance.

Davidhs, do you know a lot of ‘migrants’ (sic)? I’m interested to know whether your information comes from your own personal experience or from the right wing press.

So why use people traffickers? They pay them hundreds of euros to get across the Channel. They have mobile phones and laptops (and a passport of some kind). Why not just book a ticket on Eurostar and come over here properly to be processed? I really don’t get it.

Africa and Middle East population 1,500,000,000 approximately. If only 10% leave to claim asylum in Europe that’s 150 million spread over 10 countries (arguably as they only want to go to the wealthiest) - how s that managed?

To answer your question directly, I would be happy to have open borders. We’ve benefitted hugely, in the long term, from the Angles, the Saxons, the Vikings, the Normans, the Huguenots, the Windrush generation. Why stop now?

There is no solution, because whatever government we have migration is a big negative issue, it’s not left wing v right wing.

I don’t think the Celts and Britons were very happy when they were invaded by those groups.

I do know quite a few migrants, the majority have quite strong, right wing views, they do not want any more. Its not quite what I expected, they have had to work hard for what they have achieved and are not sympathetic

I have friends that were asylum seekers. They were professionals in their own country but were forced to leave. They are happy to be here and to contribute even though they are now only able to work as blue collar workers, unable to practise their professions. They definitely don`t have right wing views. Neither do the Zimbabwean teachers I have worked with, or my Nigearian friend, OR my daughters Argentinian ex boyfriend.

All living here. Paying taxes.

As people are giving anecdotes I’m probably one of the only people on here who actually lives next door to a refugee. Without giving too many details, he is a pleasant and well spoken young man, who has been taken in by the neighbouring family He isn’t allowed to work, we aren’t allowed to pay him to wash the car or dig the garden.

If these people are genuine asylum seekers why do they need to destroy all their documentation. Surely having this information would help the UK to decide if they were genuine asylum seekers/refugees and then support them. Whilst economic migrants, in no danger, could then be returned to their country of origin.

France has an interest in helping stop the immigration to the UK as they group in Calais, so it helps them if the route is less viable.

If the law is changed so that any immigrant passing through a safe country is deemed an economic migrant would we still send them back to death to their origin country?

No one should have to live under tyranny but we are such a small country, we can't accept them all.

I have no answer, greater minds need to find a way but once they are here lets be kind.

Police Scotland took down large-scale asylum seeker grooming gang in Glasgow – but kept it secret

The gang preyed on vulnerable young girls in the city, and had at least 44 victims, including a core group of six youngsters who were all known to each other.

It's believed one may have been abused by 28 men, with another linked to 23.

55 suspected members of the vile group were identified by officers, with 46 positively identified.All were asylum seekers from the Kurdish, Afghani, Egyptian, Moroccan, Turkish, Pakistani or Iraqi communities.

Operation Cerrar was kept under wraps by Police Scotland, and has now come to light after an investigation by the Daily Express.

I hadn’t heard about that Firecracker. This kind of information needs to be pubic knowledge. I can only assume it was kept secret because of the identity of the vile perpetrators.

Another 44 girls who have had their innocence shattered.

I googled after reading Firecracker's post and found several Scottish newspapers reporting on this. Those reports followed investigative journalists from The Express exposed the investigation. Police Scotland justified its decision to keep the investigation out of the press in order to protect the victims and the integrity of the investigation.
It seems horribly reminiscent of the grooming gangs in so many towns in England. I understand the need to protect victims/witnesses by avoiding publicity during the investigation and the trial. Tommy Robinson de-railed on trial by his actions which were motivated more by racism than protection of victims. The idea of avoiding press reporting after successful trials seems plane wrong.

So why is this being kept under wraps? Scottish politicians leaning on the police to keep it quiet? Good for the Daily Express ( who have a long history of bringing murky things to light).
Asylum seekers can be anything at all, good people and also very bad ones, I hope these particular ones are sent packing after their jail time.
