Signed, I weep for those poor girls

Oldwoman70 Fri 14-Aug-20 13:47:10

Are you saying that because you disagree with Tommy Robinson (as do I), then you won't sign the petition? That because Tommy Robinson used the religion the gangs professed to follow there should not be an enquiry into the way the matter was dealt with?

timetogo2016 Fri 14-Aug-20 13:49:41

Signed.

No, I did not say that at all smile.

I said that the situation has become very muddled because of the vested interests and the unwillingness to confront some difficult issues. I signed the petition (or one very similar) quite some time ago, and would be delighted if there were an inquiry.

This petition isnt into what happened in Rochdale though is it? From my understanding it's a general petition about grooming gangs?

Signed and shared

Signed, and clicked on the email to confirm.
Please don't ignore this, whatever your reasons, silence doesn't bring change.

MerylStreep Fri 14-Aug-20 15:09:03

I wish I could sign a million times.
As for somebody saying i don't understand the racism claim
They must be on another planet.

FarNorth Fri 14-Aug-20 15:18:44

Okay, I may be on another planet - but I don't understand why crime would not be investigated regardless of who the suspects are.

Thanks to those who have made comments and also signed the petition

It will be difficult to get a Public Inquiry. So many people just go quiet when this issue is mentioned. Which is not right. Some thing being difficult should never stop us trying.

The government are likely to say that they are carrying out their own inquiries. But a public inquiry is different its free from political interference, impartial and objective. Dealing in facts. Having three core aims: To determine what when wrong, who was to blame and recommendations to prevent the issue in the future.

I wrote the petition and got it oked by the Maggie Oliver Foundation who support survivors. She and her foundation are supporting the petition.

The petition is national because there have been prosecutions of grooming gangs across the country, including Bristol, Oxford, Rochdale, Newcastle and many more towns and cities.

Best Regards

George

But NOTHING'S happened since Rochdale, so why isn't anything working that it's happening again ??
Just signing something isn't going to make it stop is it ? This has been rumbling on since 2012 for God's sake so why in 2020 is it still allowed to continue ? What's going on with policing in these areas ?
Where are the MP's who are responsible for these areas ? It shouldn't be happening !! This country needs to get a grip.

EllanVannin Fri 14-Aug-20 15:47:42

I've literally lost count of the number of petitions I've signed for various things but have come to the conclusion they all go in the "out" tray.

EllanVannin Fri 14-Aug-20 15:51:14

Can anyone show me a genuine petition that's been a success ?

CraftyGranny Fri 14-Aug-20 15:59:41

Done

toscalily Fri 14-Aug-20 17:33:08

Signed.

Jane10 Fri 14-Aug-20 20:19:08

Just sign it.

Curlywhirly Fri 14-Aug-20 21:17:30

Signed. EllanVannin I think the petition started by a young girl regarding banning battery hen farms was a success, apparently by 2025 all battery hen farms will be phased out in the UK (or England, can't remember which).

Galaxy Fri 14-Aug-20 21:21:53

I think change only happens if there are individuals working hard to achieve this. It's not usually achieved by petitions alone. That isn't to say petitions arent important, they are, but they need to be part of an effective campaign. So there is a petition about we cant consent to this ( women killed by men who use rough sex as a defence) this is making progress but that is because it was part.of a sustained campaign.

EllanVannin Fri 14-Aug-20 22:28:56

Curlywhirly, why by 2025 ? Why not now ?
If we can demand that those who return from holiday have to isolate for two weeks, why can't these petitions bring about laws with immediate effect ?

Galaxy Fri 14-Aug-20 22:31:55

Because change in the law is a slow process and takes work , endless work. Petitions arent a magic wand.

Curlywhirly Sun 16-Aug-20 00:22:07

EllanVannin because it will take that long for farms to change their methods, build new enclosures and provide a more humane environment.

There was also classism and sexism involved - the girls were seen as slags by many even when underage - so weren’t worth worrying about.

SilentGames Sun 16-Aug-20 08:55:01

Jane43 what a sad story and that this kind of criminal behaviour was ignored. Unbelievable! I truly believe that if these girls had been black or Asian it wouldn’t have happened. What is happening is we cannot have open debates about other races due to this fear of using the racist card. Hopefully we will have some people in power who have their eyes open to what has been happening and stand up to this disease that is rapidly gaining strength in this country. I suppose women’s lives don’t matter and never have? I have signed.

Iam64 Sun 16-Aug-20 09:18:55

I've signed a number of petitions and been in touch with the Maggie Oliver foundation.
I share the views expressed by Doodledog. We need to re-invest in safeguarding children. We need police and social work teams based in the same buildings, working co-operatively on safeguarding issues. The teams need to be properly funded, trained and supported. Most of all, they need to be respected and listened to by their senior managers. As early as 1997, this issue was being raised in police/health/social work/probation/education organisations. The people on the ground were not supported by the people at the top. Resources was the excuse given for not putting together specialist investigative teams.

George4444 Mon 17-Aug-20 13:32:15

Veganrocks its important to not blame the victims. Attitudes have to be changed regarding this type of crime. I understand what you are saying regarding sexism and classism. Every one is equal under the law.

Under aged girls have been targeted in shopping centres, in parks, outside their homes, on the way home from school. In a recent court case the victim was targeted on her newspaper round.

It often starts with a boy friend the girls same age before being turned in to the worst type of horrible abuse that can last years. As the boy friend is a member of the grooming gang and has ensnared the young girl. The victim can be from any area of a city.

The police and people are alot more aware of this type of crime and prosecutions are happening. The petition will answer what happened who was at fault and what can be done to stop this happening again.

Signing the petition will help. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/327566

If 10% of Gransnet signed the petition we would push through the 10,000 point easily.
