No.s 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 8 on Amazon downloads Vera Lynn and No.7 is a choral version.

No.1 on the "original charts"

What is there to discuss?

MaizieD Thu 27-Aug-20 11:06:37

Dead cat.

All the BBC said was that they weren't going to be sung because of covid safety considerations.

Land of Hope and Glory has dreadful Empire praising lyrics. Not appropriate any more. I doubt if many people know them, though, it's just a good tune with a catchy title and chorus.

Actually, the place I volunteer at put on a Last Night at the Proms event last year and by the time we'd sung Hope & Glory and Rule Britannia and waved flags I was thinking it was all very silly in view of the fact that Britain is busy destroying itself and its respected place in the world and becoming like a banana republic.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 27-Aug-20 11:12:44

MaizieD if the choir is going to sing other pieces including Juraselem there is absolutely no reasoning for them not to sing Land of Hope and Glory........just the BBC playing to the crowd of woke supporters and its backfired!!!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 27-Aug-20 11:24:04

Language!!! just because some people disagree with you - you swear - nice!!

Firecracker123 Thu 27-Aug-20 11:29:49

The BBC trying to ban Land of Hope and Glory has actually united Middle England against the woke Liberal lefties. I love this song and Rule Brittania and also Jerusalem they make me proud to be English.

MaizieD Thu 27-Aug-20 11:31:18

Enjoy this thread, ladies

Parsley3 Thu 27-Aug-20 11:36:00

Is Rule Britannia only for the English?

trisher Thu 27-Aug-20 11:36:14

I was wondering if it was a ploy by the estate of Vera Lynn to make a little extra cash from her version.
I bet hardly anyone knows the words.

Grandma70s Thu 27-Aug-20 11:41:19

I’ve had to sing these songs as a choir member. Land of Hope and Glory is Edwardian twaddle tacked onto a good tune by Elgar at the request of king Edward VII. Not Elgar’s fault. Rule Britannia is a very old song from 1740, and I see it in that context. It’s not about now.

I feel Jerusalem is in a different class. It’s great poetry by William Blake, and it isn’t particularly patriotic. The music by Parry complements the words well, and is singable by anybody without being trite.

I do wonder if those who use ‘f’ do so to their children / grandchildren, speaking to people they meet in shops etc. Probably.

Exactly! It's a totally manufactured "casus belli" for a culture war.

Get the plebs arguing about something which doesn't matter and nobody complained about in the first place, to distract them from what's really going on.

Anniebach Thu 27-Aug-20 11:46:23

Jerusalem is only for England

Fennel Thu 27-Aug-20 11:47:06

The words of Land of Hope and Glory do sound a bit silly now (imo). The tune is inspiring though.
And I like Rule Brittania - to me it's about being an island nation and depending on our naval forces for protection and sustenance. Not racist or colonist.
Sadly they are much reduced now.

Fennel Thu 27-Aug-20 11:48:04

ps I mean the naval forces are reduced.

MerylStreep Thu 27-Aug-20 11:48:08

discuss sounded to me like a command from a teacher.
I will not print on here what my response was to my classmates.

EllanVannin Thu 27-Aug-20 11:48:53

I'm just sick of it all !

GrannyGravy13 Thu 27-Aug-20 11:48:57

growstuff maybe the BBC wants to detract from the current defund the BBC campaign, many are cancelling / not renewing their licences?

Lucca Thu 27-Aug-20 11:54:23

Probably not in fact. Bit of an assumption.

Firecracker123 Thu 27-Aug-20 11:54:48

It's another nail in the coffin for the BBC I support the campaign. I haven't got a TV licence and I'm not getting one, I don't watch the BBC or live tv.
