Yes.

Now, I’m not sure about this so am happy to be told I’m wrong but I always thought that it was Blair and Clinton working together that helped to bring about peace in Ireland. Along, of course, with many other people.

lemongrove Thu 07-Jan-21 23:21:58

It goes without saying that anyone at all would be better than DT though!

lemongrove Thu 07-Jan-21 23:16:53

I don’t think any past Presidents have really understood the Irish situation. If they think they have any Irish blood in them,
Most Americans have flawed and sentimental views of Ireland and ‘the troubles’.
Of course he will work with Westminster, he has to it’s politics and diplomacy, but feeling some warmth for the UK is always an asset.

Iam64 Thu 07-Jan-21 21:20:43

X posted with you there paddyanne. I agree with you

paddyanne Thu 07-Jan-21 21:19:50

Most past presidents have been very pro Ireland ,at least since Kennedy, all keen to show Irish roots..there is a massive Irish population in the US ,remember .Being supportive of ONE nation doens't mean you cant be supportive of another.I'm sure he'll work with the "UK" even though he has a low opinion of Johnston ...

Iam64 Thu 07-Jan-21 21:19:36

Biden shares a similar view to many Americans about the history of Ireland. Joining in the singing of rebel songs in an Irish pub doesn’t mean he won’t work well with Westminster. So far, he’s doing a better job in days than Trump did in four years. I know which President I’d value as a friend

PippaZ Thu 07-Jan-21 20:55:34

Ms. Pelosi called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows him and the Cabinet to take the power of the presidency from Mr. Trump. Her remarks echoed a similar statement made earlier by Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader.

If Mr. Pence did not move to do so, Ms. Pelosi said that she and other members of Congress “may be prepared” to move forward with impeaching the president for a second time.

lemongrove Thu 07-Jan-21 20:54:21

We must sincerely hope so.

biba70 Thu 07-Jan-21 20:48:49

I do think he will be a true friend.

lemongrove Thu 07-Jan-21 20:46:08

That he may well not be a friend to the UK.

Bidens speech wow!

Who was it said they thought he was passed it? lemon? There isn’t a single member of the government who give such a speech.

Nope..not me, never said he was ‘passed it’ ( presume you mean ‘past it’) ?

What did you say?

Just popped up on my news feed. "Trump has told aides he wants to pardon himself, reports claim".

I’ve actually welled up every time I’ve heard him speak over the past few weeks. I actually prefer the way he speaks to Obama, who spoke so slowly I kind of forgot (much as I adored him) by the end of a sentence what he was actually talking about. A true statesman imo.

At last an American who sounds and acts like a president.

^Not often I feel moved to applaud Mark Zuckerberg, but this time - ??^

I don't find Zuckerberg particularly admirable as he has allowed his platform to be used for years to disseminate hatred and falsehoods.

This might be a wake up call for him to get facebook to clean up its act.

I'll reserve judgement I think.

As Monbiot reminds us.

Once the Nazis fell, everyone in France was a member if the resistance.

You are right in reserving judgement.

lemongrove Thu 07-Jan-21 18:26:47

Yes, I agree ( I said that on another thread today) which is why I used the word ‘usually’.
Although, I don’t think he is very Irish ( grandparent/ great grandparent)? That’s more than enough for many Americans mind you.

MaizieD Thu 07-Jan-21 18:20:06

I realise that you aren’t a fan of the UK, but there is usually a President of the US who is.

I don't think that the next one is. Too Irish.

Lemongrove I dont think its compulsory to be on the side of the UK even when in a country they are occupying against half its populations will .NI is IRISH and it will be reunified especially after the mess Bojo and his circus have made of Brexit ....no border they said .Look how that turned out !!
