Won’t do a virtual debate - should be empty chaired. Good news
Thanks for clarifying Rhinestone.
Still fighting Brexit I see Pippaz?
(Whispers) Out of the EU now.?
A question for Rhinestone:
If Trump is not removed from office, does that leave the path open for him to stand again in 4 years' time?
I doubt he would be chosen, of course, but I'd rule nothing out.
Presumably, if the 25th Amendment was invoked, that would mean he could never stand again.
I don't think Biden is very impressed with the RU now either

Please don’t assume I voted Leave for any of those reasons PippaZ. None apply to me. Think instead of sclerotic EU. It’s very expensive administration (Brussels/Strasbourg) with subsidies, translators, etc for 27 member states and you have the gist of it for me. Nothing to do with immigration numbers. I just happened to believe we can do things more nimbly, adjust to circumstances under our own control without a conversation in Europe and a vote every time we’d like to do something our way, for ourselves.
Covid-vaccination anybody?
?
The howls from Remainers, in and outside of the HoC, was relentless. Took more than 4 years to go through all the thwarting tactics before eventually the democratic vote was acted upon!
They are allowed to "howl", as you describe it, as long as what they are doing is democratic and, as I said, they have every right in the future to continue to look for change or reversal if that is what they chose to do and it is done democratically.
Any suggestion that they may not is plainly undemocratic.
The majority of the police in the USA are for Trump.
Anything to do with the Democrat’s cry of ‘defund the police’ do you think?

How rude. I am simply replying to the points others have made. What is "Brexit"? We have left and are moving on - in whatever direction the country choses. The future is there for the taking.

I was talking about the Leave base. I did not suggest that include everyone who voted Leave any more than I would suggest everyone who voted for Trump turned up to trash the Capitol.

I know threads meander but you are taking this one way off course.
The majority of the police in the USA are for Trump.
I would hope that the police would respect the rule of law whoever is in power, but that went by the wayside in recent years.
That should not be Trump's law and the sooner he is gone the better.

Not any longer
PippaZ as a leave voter and someone married to an immigrant for over 40 years I find your description of leave voters offensive

I did not post that Callistemon - and would not. Much nicer if you don't misquote.

What are you talking about?

I did not describe leave voters. I described the leave base. If you would like references to academic studies of this I can let you have them.

^Similarly, many of the backers of "BoJo" - his base - were nativists. I truly believe that if the leavers had lost we could have seen something along the lines of yesterday, here in the UK. While using every democratic lever, the Remain cohort accepted the outcome, however. Johnson and/or his base and backers have attacked the constitution, attacked our democracy and lied or mislead in ways that would appeal to such a base.^
All that is required is acceptance of a democratic vote. Even though the running of the campaign was “Trump style”, it was accepted
Surely you jest Beau?
Leavers never expected (just hoped) for Brexit. The polls indicated several times over a win for Remain! The shock was seismic. Remember David Dimblebey’s face at 5am on the BBC news? The howls from Remainers, in and outside of the HoC, was relentless. Took more than 4 years to go through all the thwarting tactics before eventually the democratic vote was acted upon!
Some people have selective memories ...
No. Not selective memories. Just very good memories. Oh and drawers full of vote leave propaganda full of lies.
Four years ago we laughed at the thought that Trump would be voted in as President.
After he took office it soon became very clear that he had quite serious personality issues and there was alarm expressed.
But what happened was that his lies, cronyism and divisive and hate filled language became the norm, and we seemed to accept his behaviour as an evil that had to somehow be tolerated.
What a serious error.
Never accept a politician whose behaviour is not acceptable in normal discourse.
Even Trump called Johnson ‘Britain Trump’.
Ah, it must be true then!
Reminder.
You can’t slip a cigarette paper between Johnson and Trump
Biden.
You would never think they were the other side of the political divide!
You are allowed to support a politician who has been elected without believing every word that comes out of their mouth. They are a bit like media companies, they are trying to sell their policies and getting people to buy into them so they are elected or re-elected. Just like media companies, they gild the lily, push for more knowing they will get less, etc. I have no doubt that Boris is a spoiled brat who has no idea how the ordinary people live, but I doubt he is mentally deranged like Trump appears to be. After all, even with all the provocation from the Remainers with their legal protesting, I didn't see him encouraging Leavers or the far right to go out and rampage through Government Buildings to get their own way.
I think the actual police response to the invasion was pathetic and I am suspicious as to where their loyalties lie. Even my husband who is fed up of the BLM being rammed down his throat, (his words, not mine and I don't feel that way at all) remarked at the differences in policing white people.
I fear that any attempts to remove Trump before his time is up will just provoke his supporters. Facebook may have banned him but BitChute will continue to disseminate his bile and many right wing groups use other ways to try to provoke change.
I think the Western World will eventually have to have the conversation about the right Free Speech, the need for responsibility that goes with it and just how much we should allow social media to influence social behaviour. The trouble is balancing all this against censorship. It just seems to me that the wonderful tool of the internet is also killing us as a cohesive society.
Johnson is a pale British version of Trump.
He lies most of the time, is sexually incontinent, dithers, tries to promote his image as a "personality", is totally out of his depth as a leader, has no real concern for the people of his country, not very bright, but can quote rubbish in Latin.
Much nicer if you don't misquote
Sorry, I should have made it clear it was Urmstongran's quote.
Much clearer, though, if you read the thread.
Welcome back.
Not often I feel moved to applaud Mark Zuckerberg, but this time - ??
Donald Trump will be suspended from Facebook and Instagram indefinitely and at least until the end of his time in office, Mark Zuckerberg has said, as a consequence of his support for the rioters who stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday.
The US president was initially suspended from the social network for just 24 hours, as a result of two posts shared to the platform in which he appeared to praise the actions of the rioters.
In a post to Facebook on Thursday Zuckerberg said the suspension will last much longer. “The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,” Facebook’s CEO wrote.

I don't think she is, Callistomen.
Twitter today is full of rightwingers trying to equate the Trump mob with anti Brexit campaigners, asserting that 'Remainers' were being as undemocratic as them. PippaZ is, I think, pointing out that the Leave base had greater similarities with the Trump supporters, in being influenced by the same extreme rightwing actors and the same techniques.
Let's not forget that there was a huge rush of Leave campaign leaders to align themselves with Trump; including Johnson, who suggested that Trump should be nominated for a Nobel Peace prize....
Lots of pictures of Farage, Gove, Murdoch, Banks, Hannan, Wigmore etc proudly posing with Trump in Trump Towers following his election as US president. This wasn't diplomatic congratulation of a long time ally, the US, it was like siding with like.
And please don't try to tell me that twitter isn't 'real life'. These people have thousands of followers who empathise with their beliefs ands approve their methods.
Social media is hugely influential. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be so extensively used for propaganda and misinformation. Vote Leave spent £thousands on targeted ads on Facebook....
He should have been banned from Facebook and Twitter years ago.
They have given him the license and the means to brainwash the stupidest, most weak minded and prejudiced Americans and he has expolited it to the fullest extent.
I wouldn't try to tell you anything MaizieD
?
Lemongrove I dont think its compulsory to be on the side of the UK even when in a country they are occupying against half its populations will .NI is IRISH and it will be reunified especially after the mess Bojo and his circus have made of Brexit ....no border they said .Look how that turned out !!
