How did we ever get to have such an incompetent government?

Just as the home secretary can never be too Brexity or dog-whistle rightwing, she can also never be too stupid or incompetent. These are the qualities Boris most admires, having gone to some trouble to eliminate every cabinet minister who showed the slightest sign of having any independence of thought. Or even of having a mind at all. Priti Patel’s sole purpose in government is to be Priti Vaca

growstuff I think that there will be a reshuffle once the Covid Vaccine roll out is underway, and the WA transition period ends (hopefully with a deal).

Tony Blair was elected with 35.2% of the vote, the smallest percentage ever and had a majority government.

Where you all up in arms about the unfairness of that result?

I think not!

It's difficult to tell who was up in arms when Blair won - very little social media on the internet then. However, I can assure you that many people, despite being LP supporters would have preferred a different system of voting. When Thatcher won in 1979 the Tories had 43.9% of the vote and the combined Labour and Liberal percentage was 50.7%.

FPTP is not a good way of choosing a government but nor was the Alternative Vote system - the subject of a referendum in 2011.

I have yet to see any political party make good on all its manifesto promises, this one has had the added crisis of a world pandemic.

As a Conservative I am not 100% happy with some of their decisions/actions and there is definitely room for improvement in the coming months/years.

This was not about 'manifesto promises' - but about the basis for a massively important Referendum. As Sir John says, it was sold as a 'win win' - partly based on pure lies, and later, other promises reneged on. Including an International Agreement that throws the reputation of Great Britain in the gutter. The whole world sees it, the EU sees it, Biden sees it - even if you refused to.

biba70 I have never said that I agree/approve of the bill that has now been thrown out of the H of Ls twice.

I suggest you reread my posts before casting untrue assertions.

Casdon Tue 10-Nov-20 13:15:51

Dress it up whatever way you like, this government will go down in history as incompetent - that isn’t a party political statement just a reflection of poor and weak leadership, misguided decision making and failure to listen to the people who voted for them. The same has applied to other governments of all persuasions going back centuries, but this one will be in the all time bottom 5.

biba70 Tue 10-Nov-20 13:36:09

No untrue aspertions- just responding re your post on promises on manifesto.

Your post @07.27. Nail on the head comes to mind. I wonder how many posters recognised themselves? That would be a big fat zero.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 10-Nov-20 13:51:52

petra that has just made me laugh out loud, thank you ?????

Winston Churchill is quite popular on here usually, isn't he?

“The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”

1000s who voted for Brexit voted based on lies. As Sir John said, they were sold a 'win win' Brexit- which is turning out to be a 'lose lose'. Those who would have voted for Brexit on the current reality and facts, do exist- but are a very small minority. Johnson and Government are very aware of this.

lemongrove Tue 10-Nov-20 13:59:31

Is Winston Churchill popular on here? Really?
He said a lot of things, not all of them entirely PC.?
Of course, the ‘average voter’ is everybody on here ( unless some imagine they are a cut above.)

lemongrove Tue 10-Nov-20 14:00:28

biba.....that is deluded thinking on your part.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 10-Nov-20 14:13:50

buba70 is Sir John Major your new pin-up ? If so I will gladly let him know.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 10-Nov-20 14:14:21

apologies that should read biba70

varian Tue 10-Nov-20 14:15:33

Not deluded lemon

For more than three years polls have consistently shown that most UK citizens think it was a wrong decision to take the UK out of the EU.

biba70 Tue 10-Nov-20 14:22:56

GG13, are you Edwina?

No pin up- but he is talking sense. So did many real Tories in the HoL yesterday.

Now, Barack - that is another story smile

Monica & Jaberwok Let's face it they are a bunch of mostly elderly, unelected self serving pompous, sanctimonious remainers determined to thwart what people have voted for four times,

I did enjoy the laugh! This is usually the description attributed to the likes of me.

The day Gordon Brown awarded pensioners 75p pension increase was me finished. Never again! That also goes for any idiot intent on with-drawing the nations insurance policy - nuclear deterrent.

Furthermore, did not need anyone to tell me how to vote in the Brexit referendum. The day John Major signed Maastricht was me finished again. Fortunately, he was soon on his way, and as long as the PM delivers on what this nation voted for I will continue to support!

M0nica Tue 10-Nov-20 15:02:14

Maizie After reading the last ignorant rant posted on this thread I feel perfectly content with being among the minority on the moral high ground.

Your arrogance is breath-taking. I assume that this moral high ground is self defined.

Right or wrong, the majority view should prevail. I have had a lifetime of being governed by parties with which I profoundly disagree. I may speak up to put my view and try and influence their decisions. But never would I question their right to govern, nor assume that I am superior being because my views are different to theirs.

How common is this arrogance among the left leaning? Because this attitude does come more from the left than the right.

growstuff Tue 10-Nov-20 15:19:22

I'm not questioning the Conservative's right to govern, but that still doesn't mean that I think the people governing us are competent.

But what exactly did the "nation" vote for?

Four years later, I still don't know for sure.

Remain or Leave.

The majority vote for Leave!

I'm not questioning that. I assume you're capable of more than repeating the mantra.

I'm still wondering why they voted the way they did and what they're expecting. One of life's mysteries! hmm

In any case, this thread is supposed to be about the government's competency. As usual, it's been hijacked.

sparklingsilver28 Tue 10-Nov-20 16:26:36

growstuff You asked the question and I gave the answer!

You evidently do not appreciate factual evidence that does not accord with your view. You may wish to delude yourself as much as you like but it will not change the reality of fact. Nothing more to be said!
