A great many poor people are actually in work. What they need is for jobs to pay them decent wages.

The monarchy earns more than it receives, so that is a non-starter. They also give employment to hundreds, maybe thousands. Yes, they lead what, on the surface, looks like a life of luxury but, my goodness they earn it. It is not a life I would care for.

Why are the hungry people collecting food for their kids ...fat! Yes I know there are many in genuine need and yes of course they should be helped....but you never see obese Africans queuing for food. Just wondering.....

Many ordinary working people have hit very hard times this past year - most on low wages to start with so they have very little by way of savings.

It must be very hard and somewhat embarrassing to turn up to a food bank knowing that some people will judge you if you're seen on TV.

Grany I did but, I have also researched where their money comes from and how much is given back to the state, both directly and indirectly.
I admit to admiring the queen and Duke of Edinburgh so am obviously biased, I would hate to see the RF abolished.

Don’t judge those at the food bank who are overweight. Unhealthy, fattening food is much cheaper, on the whole, than healthy food. You must have seen the McDonalds adverts for a 99p burger.
If they are working, the time factor preparing and cooking healthy food needs to be taken into account too. Education, or lack of it, must play a part too.

It is so uplifting to read posts that are genuinely empathetic to those with the least.

Sometimes when reading threads like this I despair of the human race.

Children living in poverty and families having to access charity as I have said has been exacerbated since the Pandemic, but it is the inevitable outcome of neocapitalism.

Unfettered capitalism without adequate checks and balances results in a grossly unequal society, such as we have now, with the rich getting richer, poor poorer.

There is a huge impact of gross social inequality with adverse health both mental and physical, and social. Poorer people are impacted in every area of their lives, education, jobs, life expectancy, and so much more.

What is so upsetting I think is that we accept seeing so many of our fellow citizens disadvantaged so unfairly, dependent on charity, and continue to elect governments intent on continuing the status quo, without the counterbalance of a fairer redistribution of tax, job support, and better public services and welfare provision, for starters.

Not just Tory policies either, but New Labour was keen on deregulation.

The Labour Party of Keir Hardy no longer exists. He was a Christian Socialist on the side of the poor especially children and women’s suffrage not just trade unions. He had to go to work at the age of 8 as the sole supporter for his family. His life story makes very interesting reading and shows how far the Labour Party has moved from its origins.

True compassion for our fellow citizens to my mind does not mean accepting or merely supporting the sticking plaster of charity, but fighting for fairer conditions, life chances and dignity for all.

It is obvious from reading this thread that there are many opinions on children not having enough to eat in UK, and why this is. Irrespective of one's views, it is not only disgusting to read JRM's comments, but even more so when some people make a pathetic attempt to justify his views. My loathing of JRM has nothing to do with envy of his wealth, his education, his standing, it is to do with the fact that this man thinks it appropriate to criticise UNICEF as he stands in the HoC having paid no Corporation Tax on the millions made by his consultancy based in the Cayman Islands. I have no problem at all with how much footballers, actors or heads of business earn, as long as they contribute to the country they live in. Anybody defending JRM, knowing that he dodges paying taxes needs to search their soul. Something has gone badly wrong in this country where working people are unable to earn enough to raise their families and that is what we should be discussing.

GillT57, I agree. I find it offensive that very rich people can find ways to not pay tax when poor people have to pay as required. I also find it repulsive that he makes a big thing of his religious beliefs, not because I am an atheist, but because he clearly sees nothing wrong with his comments and way of life when taken within that context.
