The most depressing thing I think I've read all year - some opinions from the world's media. We really are cut off from the rest of the world. All that talk of sunny uplands being just ahead is absolute nonsense.

Ps. I’m not bitter & twisted. At all. What a strange thing to say.

Anyway let’s not fall out. It’s silly to do so. This has been a shocking year for many. There is sadness & uncertainty aplenty.

Warmest Christmas wishes biba to you and all your family.
Sincerely meant too.

And the good news?
A Brexit trade deal is imminent.
Surely that’s something to celebrate about Brexit?

I knew we’d get a deal.
Wish I’d put a bet on!
?

Urmstongran Wed 23-Dec-20 16:38:52

Very gracious of you Retiredwell.
I don’t have dodgy friends.
Fact.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 23-Dec-20 16:42:12

A deal must be better than no deal.

No deal represents out of control chaos, but at least with a deal this government is being forced to act more sensibly.

Yes Urmstongran an own goal by the little Napoleon baffoon ha ha ha.

Merry Christmas xxx

Reminds me of a rather unpleasant description of angela Merkel which appeared on GN recently.....

Whitewavemark2 Wed 23-Dec-20 16:48:12

Xenophobia writ large

Urmstongran Wed 23-Dec-20 16:48:31

A deal will definitely be better WW you’re right there.
I’ve not had any alcohol for 5 weeks but might celebrate tonight with a wee dram if one is announced!
?
That said, I’m glad it wasn’t Mrs May’s softest of Brexit deals. We might as well never have left!

Lord David Frost has been an excellent negotiator. A very clever ‘details’ man. More of a match for Barnier. Plus his heart was in it as he voted Leave. Unlike Olly Robbins!

I'm guessing biba is on the search for the best of all worlds, (do excuse my "French nonsense" reference to Voltaire biba).
The irony is that Utopia does not exist. What works for one country does not work for another. Mentalities are very different, and why should either side change or give in?
I love Europe too, and I left the UK to marry a Frenchman. But the tit for tat behaviour of the EU countries baffles me. The closest I come to agreeing with them, is to agree to disagree.
Macron is just a product of his own country and its culture as is Merkel, as is Johnson.

And Johnson is a product of the UK. Which one is the best/worst? And before everybody tells me that the French don't like Macron and the Germans possibly don't like Merkel, at least they act in the interest of their countries whereas Johnson acts in his own interest and that of his wealthy cronies.

Ellianne Wed 23-Dec-20 16:56:58

I am not suggesting that any one leader is better or worse, just very different.

I don't resort to unpleasant descriptions of anyone but do have a sense of humour when it comes to their idiosyncrasies. The French families we mix with often comment on our ability to laugh at ourselves as Brits. It works both ways.

Lucca Wed 23-Dec-20 17:04:16

I do not find the description of macron seen on here amusing at all, sorry,

Whitewavemark2 Wed 23-Dec-20 17:05:30

ug I think it is nearer Mays deal than we might expect.

Apparently the EU has hardly moved

You don't have to go as far as the Phillipines. 3/12 hrs on a plane will take you to some shameful ( for the eu) Roma settlements in Romania and Bulgaria.

Ellianne Wed 23-Dec-20 17:07:51

Lucca that was not my description and I never said I found it funny.

Urmstongran Wed 23-Dec-20 17:15:52

I respectfully beg to disagree WW.

You haven't turned into Mystic Megmk2, have you?
As we know those predictions didn't pan out ?

Unpleasant xenophobia should have no place on Gransnet.

I’m only ever quoting what I hear and read. That was on the BBC tonight.

petra don’t forget the poor people working and living in appalling conditions in the veg/fruit poly tunnels in Spain.

Urmstongran Wed 23-Dec-20 18:23:51

Surely not GG13?
I thought Barnier & Ursula vdL we’re worried about US in the UK undermining that level playing field for unfair advantages?
?

And so many Remainers used to say how the EU terms & conditions were superior (rot) and were very concerned Tory grandees were about to slash OUR labour rights?

The truth is somewhere in the middle I expect. Neither side is perfect.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 23-Dec-20 18:47:48

I wonder why the posters who are supporters of this government always feel compelled to make personal remarks about those who oppose so much of the chaos and incompetence of this government.

I suppose it’s because their arguments are inadequate. Can’t think why else they enjoy making it so personal.

How could I forget ? I first drove though the complex 10 years ago. It was a shortcut to a campsite on the beach. No longer possible as the plastic waste has ruined that beach.
The pictures you see don't come close to the horror of the place. But people are still happy to buy the wonderful fresh fruit and veg produced there.

It's known as europes dirty secret Hardly a secret. It's humongous ?

Exactly a week ago you wrote large A DEAL IS DONE.
That didn't happen so you then stated very confidently that the deal will be signed this weekend That was last weekend btw.

Urmstongran Wed 23-Dec-20 19:28:56

And those who voted Remain did consistently & vociferously deny on GN threads that Boris was trying to get a trade deal. Said he was hell bent on no deal to make squillions for his mates. Blah-de-blah.

And several did keep positing that the EU terms & conditions for labour rights were far superior. Wrong again - I’m happy to say.

I’m joyous.
Brexit is happening.
And a deal is about to be announced!
