New EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

I thought this deserved its own thread. This deal is about to be announced and I’ve just heard Farage on the radio claiming it will be sellout. Trying to stir the pot already. Just wondered how it will be spun. There will be a lot of relieved businesses and relief that there is no deal at least.

Lucca constantly being asked to explain ones vote, day in and day out by the same individuals could definitely be described as bullying but I for one just ignore it as do many other posters who voted leave.

Isn't it quite a while since you were asked to explain your vote?

You're clearly good at holding on to a grievance.

We're all entitled to point out what a bad idea it was, though...

GrannyGravy13 Mon 28-Dec-20 11:56:06

No grievance on my behalf tchgrin

Urmstongran like you I always believed that there would be a deal ??

“It is the Financial Services share of UK total economic output” Source statistica 2020

Financial services only account for 7% of the services sector, insurance, banking and investment, most of it home consumed, net export is a modest £44bn. The other 93% of services are retail, transport, catering, distribution and any other activity we pay for that is not manufactured.

BREAKING NEWS:
Just confirmed in the Indy -
EU signs off the Brexit deal.
?

Oh ug the 27 countries knew exactly what was being negotiated?. Democracy at work.

Our Parliament were clueless and are trying to work their way through the treaty before Wednesday, when the so called debate will take place and voted on.

It’s a joke and nowhere remotely like the democratic process that took place in Europe.

seamstress Mon 28-Dec-20 13:36:58

No leaver who was backing getting full control of our waters, sending in the gunboats, or no border in the Irish sea and applauded walking away with no deal can explain why they are supporting this treaty. Is it just they just aren't interested in the detail? Also why are those who wanted to extract from the bureaucracy of the EU welcoming a whole whale of more bureaucracy? Is it another demonstration of the lies and hypocrisy which have surrounded this shambles?
Welcome to little England.

Lucca.... damn! I left out ‘tweeting’ in my bird imagery ?
Although strictly speaking the ‘squeaking’ should really be attributed to a mouse.

lemongrove Mon 28-Dec-20 14:07:40

Whitewave since that piece of news ( EU signs off the Brexit deal) was announced on the news by the BBC it was worth putting as a comment on here.

I actually read squawking not squeaking - which would actually have been in keeping with the bird theme lol grin

Remember when Remain promised us house prices would drop 30% if we voted Leave?

??

MayBee70 Mon 28-Dec-20 14:23:02

Remember when leave said that we would still be in the single market. That Turkey we’re going to join the EU. That there was no danger of companies leaving the U.K......

Urmstongran Mon 28-Dec-20 14:43:33

This, today from Nigel Farage:

“Lord Frost and Mr Johnson have paid a heavy price to get this deal over the line, but they have done far better than their predecessors and they do deserve some credit.

The most important point about this deal is that it will end the anti-Brexit hysteria. There is no going back. The grass-roots campaign to win back Britain’s independence has triumphed against the Westminster establishment. That, surely, is worth celebrating.”

Whitewavemark2 Mon 28-Dec-20 15:02:33

“It is an OK deal for trade in goods. Except for a mountain of very expensive and burdensome red tape, that is. And red tape and burdens on business are the thing the Tories always supposedly hated.

And the priority on the trade in goods also makes no sense for a service economy, which we are since the Tories abandoned manufacturing.

Plus, the deal leaves financial services, that are supposedly our greatest success story, and the biggest suppliers of funds to the Tories, in limbo.

We lost sovereignty in Northern Ireland. The UK is now in the extraordinary position of having an internal border and part of its territory within a trading bloc and the rest not.

And what did we win for all this? Freedom from the European Court of Justice? Was there anything else?

objectively it’s an awful deal that we’re going to long regret. And from that fact (for fact it is) it’s going to be hard to move on.”

A comment I’ve just read -

We had to throw our fish at the Common Market in order to join and now we’ve had to throw our fish at the European Union in order to leave.

How true!

Doesn't that start next week, GillT57?

MayBee70 Mon 28-Dec-20 15:45:19

No. Everyone knew it was a lie. Didn’t they
hmm

biba70 Mon 28-Dec-20 16:19:59

Well they did not put THIS on a bus either, and itis perhaps of the most worrying statement coming out since the Deal

British citizens arrested overseas through no fault of their own have no right to the government’s assistance or protection, even if they are tortured or held as diplomatic leverage against their country, the Foreign Office has said.

Never thought they Priti and co would sink so so low.

Urmstongran Mon 28-Dec-20 16:20:38

The deal that Boris has struck on fishing is a stunning achievement when you think about it. It gives time for the British industry to respond to the opportunities offered by regaining control of our waters.

It also accepts – as it needed to – that our former European partners deserve time to adapt. After all, it wasn’t their fault that Edward Heath betrayed the UK to gain admission to the Common Market. That was our fault and ours alone – and Boris, to his great credit, has reversed that.

biba70 Mon 28-Dec-20 16:21:20

As reported in that left wing rag 'The Times'.

Urmstongran Mon 28-Dec-20 16:28:46

What?? My comment was mine. Not from any article!

biba70 Mon 28-Dec-20 16:37:07

Posts crossed, quite obviously. The Times article relates to the Home Office statement above at 16.19.59.

biba70 Mon 28-Dec-20 16:37:46

And if THAT doesn't send shivers down your spine, nothing will.

I think that deserves a thread of its own Biba70

Nezumi65 Mon 28-Dec-20 17:40:34

I see all the northern Irish Parties that take their seats at Westminster are voting against the deal.

biba70 Mon 28-Dec-20 19:59:30

a few reminders about the reality of this 'Deal'

fb.watch/2FY1kz9uv4/

MaizieD- yes, you are right. It is perhaps the most shocking fact to emerge in last couple of days. As of course the fact we are now locked out of Europol information sharing on criminals and terrorists, which puts everyone in massively increased danger.
