New EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

I thought this deserved its own thread. This deal is about to be announced and I’ve just heard Farage on the radio claiming it will be sellout. Trying to stir the pot already. Just wondered how it will be spun. There will be a lot of relieved businesses and relief that there is no deal at least.

After all these years I was finding it difficult to believe that the deal has actually been completed, but I saw the plane, and saw Boris sign the document, so it must be true and I'm absolutely delighted.???

Johnson might like us to think that he has settled our place in Europe, but in the process he has debased the integrity of our democracy, has degraded and damaged the UKs reputation throughout the world in the name of sovereignty which the ERG accepted this week we had never lost in the first place.
As individuals we have been stripped of our rights right across Europe and th U.K.
There are masses of losses across the board, including the United Kingdom’s cohesion.

Johnson and the loons might like to think that it is all behind us “once and for all” and Starmer might be happy to go along, but those with spine and principles think otherwise.

Brexiters will always have that little voice reminding them that

“We will rejoin one day.”

There are plenty with spines and principles who voted for Brexit Whitewavemark; I don't know why some of those who didn't insist on trying to take the moral high ground.

We've had some pretty loud voices since the referendum telling us that result could be overturned and if it wasn't we would leave without a deal. They were wrong about that so whose to say they're right to they say "we will rejoin one day".

Most people have changed their minds who originally voted for brexit

Urmstongran Wed 30-Dec-20 20:37:49

Not trusting those polls still are you WW?

Pantglas2 Wed 30-Dec-20 20:42:03

I’m not sure if I can join in Urms as I didn’t vote (I was in mi Casa and missed it?) and had no strong feelings on the subject.

However I AM glad that the result of the referendum has been respected and that we’re finally out with a deal that both sides are happy with and we can move onwards.

So here’s my contribution to the celebration ? and I look forward to new horizons (if not sunny ? uplands)

There are thousands applying forIrish passports who don’t believe they are in any shackles, but prefer the protection and freedoms that the EU gives them me included thanks.

Boris cornered Starmer this afternoon. The EU debate is finished.

There is no Remain or Leave now. . After 4.5y let’s use that energy to heal division and think about the UK and making it a great country for our kids.

Let's all stop hating. It's over, done and finished.

?????

vegansrock Wed 30-Dec-20 20:43:32

I would welcome anyone who believed they were in any shackles to tell us what they could not personally do whilst in the EU that they can do now.

Lucretzia Wed 30-Dec-20 20:43:44

We won't be rejoining any time soon

vegansrock Wed 30-Dec-20 20:43:59

Over done and finished? In your dreams.

Nezumi65 Wed 30-Dec-20 20:44:24

Of course the debate isn’t finished.

Nothing has been decided on services for starters (80% of our GDP).

Urmstongran Wed 30-Dec-20 20:44:48

Well said Pantglas ?
Just the right amount of optimism there. ✅

Nezumi65 Wed 30-Dec-20 20:45:18

I’ll crack open the champagne when sons Irish passports arrive. That will be worth a celebration.

Casdon Wed 30-Dec-20 20:45:35

The central question of this post still hasn’t been answered though has it: EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

A year from now we will know far more about the implications in the real world for the UK than we do now. Those currently claiming ‘victory’ should pause for thought now and let it play out.

Urmstongran Wed 30-Dec-20 20:51:09

Boris said to Laura Kussenberg when she mentioned financial services ‘now c’mon Laura you know well enough there was never a deal to be done there’!’

From the BBC:
The prime minister refused to acknowledge it will mean new barriers to trade, in an interview BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg.

He conceded that there would be "changes" for business when the UK leaves EU trading rules on Thursday.

But he insisted the deal would allow the UK to "go our own way but also have free trade" with the EU.

Critics had said "you couldn't have free trade with the EU unless you conformed with the EU's laws", said the PM. and "that that was having your cake and eating it".
"That has turned out not to be true," he added. "I want you to see that this is a cakeist treaty."

I have just been talking on another thread about the dangers of teams. Are you with us or against us. No nuance. Just some comic book idea of goodies and baddies.
