in the USA, right not. Let's not talk about 'throwing toys out of pram'.

Never forget the armed thugs and domestic terrorists currently storming the Capitol in Washington DC, didn’t come from nowhere.
They are the end result of a carefully orchestrated strategy to destabilise the US, allowed to work by the power-greed and self-interest of politicians and media pundits, at least some of whom knew what Trump was and that his dog whistle fascism was very wrong.
There are many, many connections between Trump’s story and the people currently running the U.K. - not just similarities but the same shadowy figures, the same strategies, the same data harvesting and dark disinformation campaigns.

He has discredited himself with his party who are socially distancing themselves from him.

He doesn't need the party any more. He has millions of batsh*t crazy devotees who have demonstrated that they'll do anything for him.

And now for the volte face.
Now, Congress has certified the results. A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power.
Will anyone believe Trump's words? I wonder who wrote the script? It doesn't sound like him, but must now be taken at face value. However, more ominously, he concludes with the message to his insrgents: I know you are disappointed, but I also want you to know that our incredible journey is only just beginning.

There are people on social media claiming that the video of Trump's climbdown speech is actually a deep fake ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepfake )

Deep fake or genuine, I wouldn't trust him further than I can spit...

There are also rumblings on social media of plans for 20th January. I would think, after Wednesday's events, that they will be taken very seriously.

I think Trump is a dead duck in the water. Finally he seem to accept that Congress having certified the results the new President will be inaugurated on 20th January. Even if he is telling a big fat whopping lie I don’t see it will make any difference. He has discredited himself with his party who are socially distancing themselves from him.

WWM No once a liar always a liar
We have one in this country (well more than one) so we should find the lies easy to recognise

Can't imagine who you mean!

MawBe Fri 08-Jan-21 10:11:07

Looks like OP may have simply misunderstood the date of the original toys out of pram thread and now it’s turned into comparing GN posters who were anti Brexit to the utterly utterly dreadful Trump supporting mob. How did that happen

Totally agree Lucca but I suppose somebody, somewhere had to bring Brexit into it.
If only OP had admitted they hadn’t noticed the “toys out of the pram” thread title referred to the Presidential debates back in October - a lot of breath might not have been wasted.

Callistemon Fri 08-Jan-21 10:02:46

Ignore my brain fart if you wish, Lucca

Well I know I can be a bit thick at times....(it’s ok you don’t need to agree) . but I don’t remotely understand what this thread has turned into.

And The Film Review to add to the mix.

Callistemon Fri 08-Jan-21 09:56:53

Which programmes are you watching? One of my cousins is in one of them.
Saving Lives at Sea on BBC2 growstuff.
I don't always manage to watch it
Heroes all of them - and they are volunteers.

What a contrast to watching the mob on TV.

Participation in our democracy seems to be driven by the instant-gratification worlds of Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and the twenty-four-hour news cycle. We’re using modern technology to revert to primitive kinds of human relations. The media knows what sells----conflict and division. It’s also quick and easy. All too often anger works better than reason; emotion trumps evidence. A sanctimonious, sneering one-liner, no matter how bogus is seen as straight talk, while a calm, well-argued response is seen as canned and phony. It reminds me of an old political joke. Why do you take such an instant dislike to people? It saves a lot time.

Sanctimonious one liners nothing to ever offer the thread that is of any quality reasoned argument, but brain farts aplenty?. BF for short.

TBH they are best ignored.

Lucca, it's in the comment above mine.

^ They've had to accept it. It doesn't mean that they have to be happy about it or not have a say.^

I just wished they’d accepted it from Day 1 growstuff instead of trying to thwart it. Have a say? Yes of course, there was huge disappointment and even disbelief. But what was shoved in the path to delivery of the vote for over 4 years was a travesty of acceptance.

Again, that seems quite an anti-democratic suggestion. They are allow to use the law, the media and anything else that is legal to test the result.

Democracy has been said to comprise four key elements: a political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections; the active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life; protection of the human rights of all citizens; and a rule of law. [American political scientist Larry Diamond]

Lucca Fri 08-Jan-21 09:19:02

Who said sanctimonious etc ? To what does that refer in this thread ?(seen plenty on GN that’s true) I’m lost.

PippaZ Fri 08-Jan-21 09:13:32

A sanctimonious, sneering one-liner,

Commonly known in my family as BF's or brain farts. No need to offer evidence or reasoning just throw it out there and the nastier and more personal the better. Woe betide the person who doesn't accept them as an equal truth as they can expect personal and pile on attacks for offering evidence and reasoning in return. We seem to be a very split society sad

Growstuff Americans ideals of democracy did not include black people when the constitution was set up following the Declaration of Independence. Black slaves and women were not included in all men being equal.

It was not until the American Civil War and the13th Amendment that Black slaves were ‘freed’ - sort of. It was followed by so called Jim Crow laws in various states that prevented black people from moving and then segregation Acts in the 1890’s that prevented them mixing with whites. They weren’t allowed to go to the same schools or get on the same bus as white people. This sorry state existed until The Civil Rights Bill of 1964. This is democracy?

growstuff Fri 08-Jan-21 01:04:41

Seeing pictures of offices in the Capitol being overturned and guns being aimed at intruders must seem like an attack on the idea of democracy in the US. I think Americans are more conscious of the ideals of democracy than people in the UK, possibly because the country is a younger one and they are more aware of their constitution as something almost sacred.

Who hasn’t accepted a democratic vote? Several posters on GN for a start.?

I don't think that politics enter much, if at all into Trump's world. His words, actions and decisions are fundamentally based on his own gratification and glorification. Hatred and racism also play sizeable roles. He rewards those who benefit him, especially the rich and influential, and deliberately harms others because he has a cruel streak.

As far as grounds for cutting off family members or friends who support Trump is concerned, I think it is less a matter of politics, about which people can disagree and still remain in touch, but a question of morals and ethics.

merlotgran Thu 07-Jan-21 23:44:51

Well, those silly Scorpioni. If only they'd kept up with Twitter and Facebook they'd have known what was coming.

What a daft comparison.
