A big thank you to those who voted for Brexit

I've just been reading about the additional charges that people buying goods from the UK are having to pay on purchases arriving in EU countries. So much so that many retailers are no longer selling to people in the EU. The list is long but includes M & S, John Lewis and Fortnums. I buy a variety of things from the UK, including clothing and health supplements. I am no longer able to do this. But it's not just me and other Brits living abroad, it's everybody in the EU.

So, those cheesemakers will have a hard time and I will no longer be able to buy the very good quality cheddar from my local supermarket (which the French like to, not just Brits) because it will be too expensive.

It'll be like only being able to buy a Lada...

You can have any car you want as long as it's a Nissan.

Nothing like cutting down on consumer choice...

Casdon Sun 24-Jan-21 22:27:45

Actually you could have a Toyota instead, they are still here at the moment too - although who knows for how long.

Sunny82z Sun 24-Jan-21 22:42:57

Actually MaizieD there is no such word as unapt, the word is inept which isn't really applicable to your comment, I suppose ignorance is bliss.

MaizieD Mon 25-Jan-21 02:02:16

Try looking up the meaning of 'inept'

Myword, though not quite correct is actually just about right. Try looking up 'apt' and then its antonym, 'inapt'

Then blush.

Anyone reading my post can see that my mention of spitfires was in no way mocking said aeroplane or their pilots. Mocking the whole concept of Brexit and a festival yes. I think this is just a case of looking for something to be offended by. If you think Brexit is marvellous idea despite all the job losses, damage to businesses and divisions in the country then you are entitled to that opinion , but don’t make false accusations. As a member of a military family with losses in both world wars, I certainly would not denigrate anyone who fought in said wars, quite the opposite. I am the first to criticise those who bleat on about the British surviving the war so Brexit will be fine -I point out millions did not survive the world wars and do not make such comparisons!

nanna8 Mon 25-Jan-21 08:12:56

I would think it is totally inappropriate to compare Brexit with wartime. Many are comparing Covid with wartime conditions but I don’t think that is right, either. My family were in the RAF and some of them were killed and died for their beliefs. Brexit is trivial compared with that and my only hope is that it doesn’t actually contribute to another European war because that would not be pretty. From a distance many of us thought the EU was a wonderful way of creating unity between the Europeans but clearly we were wrong. So sad.

It was one of the longest period of peace in Europe.

To what extent is buying a Lada or Toyota 'buying British'

is it a bit like British Bananas and Yorkshire Tea?

I didn’t think Ladas were made any more?
I think MaizieD was being ironic. hmm

biba70 Mon 25-Jan-21 19:23:05

lol yes- so can you tell me which British car is still being made in the UK. I mean truly British - although evern those would have many foreign parts.

Who says 'we' were wrong? Many of us didn't think so- and the clear majority of us currently do not think so.

I think nanna8 lives in Australia, biba

We could grow our own tea, apparently it grows well here in the UK.

Casdon Mon 25-Jan-21 20:03:04

I’m not sure what the point you’re making about the cars is Biba, because most cars, wherever they are put together have parts that are made all over the world, not just UK/Europe?

biba70 Mon 25-Jan-21 20:08:27

Yes, of course- just in the context of the 'Buy British' movement- which I do support to a large extent in many ways, with a big 'but' ...

Casdon Mon 25-Jan-21 20:19:36

I guess if you’re rich and slightly eccentric you could buy a Morgan, but you’d have to go on a waiting list!

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Jan-21 20:32:48

I had British grown tea in a hotel once Callistemon and it was delicious.
Sadly, like lots of other British things, it's way too expensive:

biba70 Mon 25-Jan-21 21:27:57

near us we have a farm with an old DB (David Brown) tractor- Not sure if Aston Martin are still made in the UK?

MawBe Mon 25-Jan-21 21:45:01

Aston Martin Lagonda are made a couple of miles from where I live - nice motors!

MawBe Mon 25-Jan-21 21:48:58

We sometimes see them being taken up and down the dual carriageway near us - once saw one broken down there too , which must have been embarrassing.
My best friends’s 94year old dad used to test drive them before delivery to clients taking them up the A1. It took him a while to live down scraping one on the side of a bridge.

Callistemon Mon 25-Jan-21 21:49:44

I've ordered a few kilos NotSpaghetti, thank you for the link!

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Jan-21 22:06:22

Ha ha Callistemon! I know!

?

Maybe I'll just sell the Austin Martin, trade it in for a "British" Nissan and stock up on tea leaves.

Tregothnan produce a specialist product. Like all specialist products around the world, it is expensive. The leaves are very rare and because of its quality it's been ranked high in the world.

It's nothing to do with the tea company being British.

Casdon Why eccentric to buy a Morgan? It's a unique car and yes expensive. They’re a sure-fire investment that’ll make you a fortune.

Apparently a 1988 E-reg Plus 4 that was £16,000 five years ago costs around £19,500 today. Worth waiting 6 months for. That's the current waiting time.

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Jan-21 23:32:45

Muse we know this.
I was just having fun with Callistemon re British tea.

Callistemon Mon 25-Jan-21 23:36:27
