Does the display of union jacks by politicians making video calls from their homes not just appear ridiculous, but a tad sinister?

No problem with it at all. I think it is a bit sad when a bit of nationalistic pride is knocked. You have a good country. ??

Flying the flag - seems like desperation to me. Are they trying to evoke that elusive 'wartime spirit' again and hoping we have very short memories?

For those ( mercifully few) posters, who fear that government ministers who have their own country’s flag in their office /home office will shortly lead to the march of jackboots down Pall Mall, Whitehall and Downing St, I would say, take a few deep breaths, followed by a nice strong cup of tea and an early night.

Has anyone here got a flag in their living room?

Actually I do right now grin. It’s a small tabletop version of the City flag and it’s related to a challenge I took part in last year. We decided to go the whole hog and plant a flag at the virtual summit.

On fire tonight growstuff. ???

NellG Sat 20-Mar-21 20:54:44

The Guardian is fine with it - fear not!

I can’t equate the Union flag with the swastika. However much I try.

Now if that German classroom had the German flag in it I’d not have a problem. Would you? Inclusive for all, rather than being divisive by using a political symbol.

Not the same thing at all.

Callistemon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:50:27

you really should try Specsavers.
Although, yes, I need to but they're shut!!! Lockdown??

?

Daisend1 Sat 20-Mar-21 20:47:40

Gwyneth
There are times in this ever changing world ,echoed by friends and relatives, when it does no harm in being reminded 'who we are' .What better way than the National Flag.

Callistemon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:42:09

How rude.

growstuff Sat 20-Mar-21 20:41:52

If you can't see the parallels, you really should try Specsavers.

growstuff Sat 20-Mar-21 20:41:30

Callistemon

growstuff with respect, you seem obsessed with Hitler for some reason.

Equating the Union flag with the swastika is very, very odd indeed.

I disagree 100%. It's not odd at all.

Callistemon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:41:22

That is three times on this thread you have posted pictures of swastikas.

Do you equate the Saltire, the Welsh flag, etc with the swastika too when they are shown behind the First Ministers?

growstuff Sat 20-Mar-21 20:40:23

Or maybe this classroom form North Korea?

growstuff Sat 20-Mar-21 20:38:17

Or maybe this classroom?

Is this the kind of thing you mean Urmstongran?

Callistemon Sat 20-Mar-21 20:34:57

???

Just wondering who it is who has been worked up into a frenzy.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 20-Mar-21 20:34:21

I never respond to people that shout at me, whether that be in the real world or online...

growstuff Sat 20-Mar-21 20:32:40

It's actually quite frightening how many on GN seem to have fallen for it too.

Mamardoit Sat 20-Mar-21 20:31:47

Alegrias1

Wow, you've all worked yourselves into a frenzy because a (male) BBC presenter had a joke with a government minister over the size of the flag in the corner of his living room. Then another presenter joined in.

And no, she didn't use the term "flag-shaggers" but now that you've said it Mamardoit I guess a good proportion of people on GN will believe that.

As for making the flag compulsory in classrooms and on the BBC - well what I want to say about that would get me banned from GN. We're not a totalitarian state yet. But don't worry about the defacing of statues - you'll get a longer sentence for that than for raping someone.

I haven't worked myself into a frenzy about anything. BBC breakfast is awful to watch ....So I no longer bother with it. I did try ITV once or twice. Now I could work myself into a frenzy if I was forced to watch that.

Will go back and re read the bit about the tweet. I don't do twitter so I'm not sure what that's all about.

I'm sure other gransnetters can look things up for themselves if they want to.

growstuff Sat 20-Mar-21 20:31:03

Urmstongran You really should spend some time studying history. What you've written is truly frightening.

MaizieD Sat 20-Mar-21 20:30:16

GrannyGravy13

MaizieD so if the Government was your choice you would be OK with them having the Union Flag in the background?

How odd ? I respect our flag and I am proud to be British whatever party is in power ?????????

No, I wouldn't, GG13

BECAUSE THIS IS NOT WHAT THE BRITISH DO. WE DO NOT POSTURE IN FRONT OF UNION JACKS

I cannot respect a flag that is being used in a fascist way by a totally corrupt government.

I can assure you that I would never vote for a party which explicitly stated in its manifesto that it was planning to become a dictatorship. That's exactly what the tories did.

growstuff Sat 20-Mar-21 20:29:46

Who do you think invented the culture war Urmstongran? It wasn't the "woke" who invented it. It was those who don't like what the so-called "woke" or their cousins the "PC brigade" represent because it threatens them. And you've fallen for it, hook, line and sinker.

growstuff Sat 20-Mar-21 20:27:26

Flags are more than bits of cloth. They are very powerful symbols. The message behind them matters. In this case, they're being used in the Tories' culture war as a distraction to what's really going on.
