He had a good innings. I liked him, he was a feisty one who spoke his mind.

We are not North Korea, neither did the BBC behave as though we are.
Totalitarian behaviour. Really?

It’s clearly practising

Prince Philip over the years did a lot of wonderful work he was not faultless who really is? I am very grateful for how the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme helped my timid son to become a confident young man. He did the bronze silver and gold and it helped make him who he is now and I am very proud of him.

Very good post Mollygo. My father was of the same generation as Prince Philip too. He died five years ago at the age of 89, just missing his 90th birthday by ten days. He fought in WW2 as well. He probably said/did things that aren’t considered acceptable now, I don’t really know. Like Prince Philip he was of a different generation, but they were a generation who put duty above personal desires. I’m so pleased that Prince Philip has been recognised for all the good he did and for his strength of character and his devotion to duty, after having taken a bashing at times by the press. Princess Anne is the most like him out of all his children. I read that she might take his place supporting the Queen at functions etc. I hope she does, she’s hard working, sensible, and also has a strong sense of duty. She’s definitely her father’s daughter. I’m sure the other two (adult) children will support her well too.

Sophie Wessex seems close to the Queen, has accompanied her to Church and at some engagements

I 've just learned it was his idea to set up the interfaith meetings between religious leaders.

I think displacing a few television programmes, to be presented later, was worth it.

Yes, it was - and there are other dozens of other channels.

But not showing the programmes people wanted to watch.
You think it was worth it. Many didn't, as demonstrated by the number of complaints.

How do you know how many complaints were made? I have just read an article that says the BBC refused to say how many there were?

I'm just interested.

The DOE scheme was privatised a while ago and the first thing the private company did was sack the health and safety advisors. Wonder if anyone knows about this, quite a scandal.

Anniebach Sun 11-Apr-21 19:32:02

Can a charity be sold to a company.?

JenniferEccles Sun 11-Apr-21 19:33:17

Interestingly Sophie Wessex on the BBC news earlier remarked to a member of the public (who possibly had asked how the Queen was) that she was as usual thinking of others rather than herself.

I like Sophie Wessex. She comes across as a very warm friendly person and I am not surprised that she is one of the Queen’s favourites

trisher Sun 11-Apr-21 19:34:27

Sophie Wessex talking about his death on TV. So how many people were there? Isn't that breaking lockdown?

Peasblossom Sun 11-Apr-21 19:40:24

Can you tell me where you read DOE was privatised, vegansrock?

I’ve done a little googling and it is a registered charity run by trustees.

Could you have got that wrong?

Alegrias1 Sun 11-Apr-21 19:42:01

I'm not quite sure what "privatised" means in this context but the DoE has been a limited company since 1998, as well as being a charity. So I don't think 23 years ago is recent. Can't find any references to H&S people being sacked either.

DF used to organise the DoE for a group he ran and they did their own H&S checks. He was qualified to do that.

But, interested to see any contrary reports.

Cross posts, Peasblossom

It is difficult for TV channels to fill the screens 24/7 with anything that is worth watching.
Many of us will remember a time with limited coverage & limited watching time. Generations have now grown up expecting to continuously access programmes.
And of course it always comes down to revenue or loss of it.

No, church services are allowed, must be social distancing and
public health requirements met . The service this morning was held in a church for inhabitants and staff

Another lovely one today

It is a Royal Charter Corporation, quite different to being privatised.
It is a charitable trust and there is nothing whatsoever about sacking any Health & Safety officials online.
quite a scandal Really? do you have inside information?

Why anyone could post so about a scheme which has helped so many young people worldwide to achieve their ambitions is really such a strange thing to do.

Anniebach Sun 11-Apr-21 20:50:56

As someone involved with the Scout movement for many years
I have so much respect for this award , so many young people
working for their bronze, silver, gold and much pride when they achieved their goal.

It has done so for millions

Calendargirl Sun 11-Apr-21 20:54:57

I agree JenniferEccles. Sophie Wessex always comes across as a wonderful ambassador for the Royal Family.

Edward made a good choice.

Anniebach Sun 11-Apr-21 21:14:07

Sophie does a lot of charity work, it is never reported , she doesn’t chase cameras or give the media ‘mememe’

LtEve Sun 11-Apr-21 22:34:36

My dad (who would have been 100 in February) served with Prince Philip( although he wasn’t called that then) during WW2. He had enormous respect for him, both as a naval officer and a decent, honourable man. I’ll be raising a glass to the memory of both of them. RIP

Vegansrock Here is all the information you need about how the Duke of Edinburgh's Award became a Royal Chartered Company. www.bbc.co.uk/archive/news--royal-charter-for-duke-of-edinburghs-award/zrdpwty . Including coverage of the ceremony where the Queen handed them the charter.

There are also a couple of good Wikipedia articles on the subject.

jeanie99 Mon 12-Apr-21 00:55:30

My heartfelt thoughts are with the Queen at this time.

The BBC had so many complaints that it gave a special page to complain and then that had so many they took it down.
