He had a good innings. I liked him, he was a feisty one who spoke his mind.

I feel saddened by the news although it was not unexpected. I'd hoped, too, that he would have reached his 100th birthday.

He served this country well, as a Royal Naval officer and as a stalwart who was there to support his wife in her duties both here and around the world. Having met him briefly, I can attest to his sense of humour.

Condolences to Her Majesty and family.

RIP Prince Philip

A moment in history. Condolences to Her Majesty and the family

I have just seen this on my FB page posted by the National Trust:

The Duke of Edinburgh became Patron of our 'Enterprise Neptune' appeal in 1965. We're grateful for his support and patronage, which enabled us to acquire 576 miles of coastline in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, for everyone

I remember Operation Neptune.

Sorry to hear this. I wondered whether he had really recovered after the last illness. RIP Prince Philip
Condolences to the Queen and her family. Let’s hope she gets peace to mourn her loss.

I too have been surprised by how saddened I am by this news. I feel so sorry for the Queen, left on her own and with few, if any, of her contemporaries still alive.
Prince Philip didn’t have an easy life but what a legacy he has left to the young people of this country. The ‘D of E’ has given focus and purpose to so many young lives, including my DDs.

I'm one of those who often say "I'm not a Royalist." Nevertheless, I feel surprisingly upset by this news. Maybe it's because he's one of those people who were just there, getting on with things and one expects them to go on doing just that.

Condolences to the Queen and her family. Let’s hope she gets peace to mourn her loss.
I second that adaunas. I sincerely hope she is allowed the privacy anyone would need at such a time and isn’t pressured to show her emotions in public.

I’m another one feeling sad and very sorry he didn’t make it to his century. He took a lot of stick over the years for making some very un-PC comments but in many ways he was a real innovator and of course the Queen’s unwavering support. RIP.

Such a sad day for the Queen. He was her rock.

The Duke of Edinburgh award has helped so many young people including my grandson who won his award a few years ago.

RIP Prince Phillip.

It’s sad news for the family, but I think the BBC have gone into overdrive with never ending programmes about him, not much we didn’t already know of course. Plus I’ve just had an email from the RHS saying they would close their gardens on the day of the funeral - why? It’s not going to be a state funeral, he said he didn’t want a fuss, I’m sure he’d rather the gardens remained open. It’s not as if any of us will be going.

eazybee Fri 09-Apr-21 16:20:45

It is one day.

Deedaa Fri 09-Apr-21 16:24:42

The BBC isn't alone. ITV. Channel 4 and Channel 5 are all wall to wall with it as well. It's a shame he didn't reach the 100 but I suspect he would have thought it was a lot of faff.

trisher

I wondered when he was released from hospital if it was just to die at home. He's lucky many don't get that. RIP.

My thought too. He was a one-off to be sure.

It is one day.

Odd, isn't it. I was thinking that perhaps it would be made a public holiday; but if it's a holiday people will expect places to be open for their entertainment... hmm

I feel sad about his death, too. It's another part of our lives that's gone. But I think that the media are going a bit OTT... I'm sure it wasn't like this when the Queen Mum died.

I’m not an ardent royalist but I was very sorry to hear this, especially for the Queen.

grandmajet Fri 09-Apr-21 16:32:18

Sad news, I’m in awe of the Queen carrying out duties recently in spite of all that is going on in her life.
R.I.P. Prince Philip.

vegansrock Fri 09-Apr-21 16:44:20

I heard it’s not going to be a state funeral, we aren’t allowed big funerals anyway are we? Or is there a different rule for royals? A private family affair would be appropriate I think.

sodapop Fri 09-Apr-21 16:51:18

I agree Ourkid he has been there all my life just getting on with his duty supporting the Queen.
No state funeral as per his wishes and due to the pandemic.

NanaandGrampy Fri 09-Apr-21 16:58:36

Just very sad news- the end of an era and the winds of change are coming sadly.

Anniebach Fri 09-Apr-21 17:00:25

Unusual if he is buried in Frogmore, surely the queen will not be

hulahoop Fri 09-Apr-21 17:06:52

It is sad for his family but I'm sure he wouldn't want a fuss why it needs to be on every television station all repeating the same thing .

Party4 Fri 09-Apr-21 17:08:22

R.I.P. and condolences to our Queen and family. He has worked hard in supporting the Queen and although a great age, always a sad farewell.

Daisend1 Fri 09-Apr-21 17:16:35

Such sad news and I consider myself privileged to have witnessed the years of dedication he gave his wife and country.

LauraNorder Fri 09-Apr-21 17:25:00

One afternoon of reflection about the life of a man who gave so much of himself to our queen and country.
