The Queen and dedication to duty in the 21st Century

Does dedication to duty overwhelm any other consideration when it comes to being Head of State?

Why can a person stay in post, with all the deference that entails, when someone else is doing all the "work"?

Is anyone else worried that a 95 year old lady believes she has to keep on keeping on when many, many other monarchs have moved on in life and their countries haven't crumbled?

jacqrose it's just the unfairness of the of an hereditary monarchy and all that goes with it that I've never been able to get my head around.
You can't understand that being the sovereign is a role you have to train for from birth? It requires a deep understanding of what a lifetime of devotion and duty actually means. I doubt anyone other than someone in a direct line of descent could take all that on board.
Do you mean unfairness to them or to everyone else? It could be taken either way. Most people would not want the burden of such a role in life.

I don't think it is particularly fair on them either but they accept it with dignity, grace and a sense of duty.

Well, most of them do, there are always exceptions and leaving with a sense of grace and dignity would be understood by most people, I think.

Where men are forbidden to honour a king they honour millionaires, athletes or film stars instead: even famous prostitutes or gangsters. For spiritual nature, like bodily nature, will be served; deny it food and it will gobble poison - C.S. Lewis

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Apr-21 09:31:06

Aye, C S Lewis.

The author who prevented Susan from entering paradise because she wore lipstick.

We could honour a president democratically elected Head of State in stead of the corrupt monarchy How can you honour corruption?

Chestnut Fri 23-Apr-21 09:41:35

Grany

We could honour a president democratically elected Head of State in stead of the corrupt monarchy How can you honour corruption?

In what way is our Queen and her family so corrupt? And presumably you think our democratically elected Prime Minister and government are pure of corruption?

Anniebach Fri 23-Apr-21 09:51:41

We elected Boris Johnson, the Labour Party elected Corbyn,

Grany Fri 23-Apr-21 09:54:04

If you watch the 1 minute video you will see why monarchy is corrupt It explains it better than I could.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=MGKP_iDlCnE

If we had a president he she would not allow corruption in government You see queen can't do anything except what her PM asks her to do.

Anniebach Fri 23-Apr-21 10:04:03

Is there a video of corrupt presidents ?

maddyone Fri 23-Apr-21 10:11:04

Really! I wish I had such faith. At least this sentence made me laugh this morning.

Anniebach Fri 23-Apr-21 10:14:45

Such faith maddyone. rather like having faith that the tooth fairy will leave the money under the pillow

jacqrose Fri 23-Apr-21 10:14:57

Chestnut you make it sound like a religious calling, which I find strange. For anyone a life long dedication to service and duty is unfair to them, although it is a very gilded cage for the RF. H&M touched on him being trapped I recall. It is also unfair and undemocratic in the 21st century that the people do not get to choose their head of state.

Well, most of them do, there are always exceptions and leaving with a sense of grace and dignity would be understood by most people, I think.
Callistemon I agree.

Haha ?

I know we’ve done this topic to death, but in my opinion, Meghan and Harry did not
leave with a sense of grace and dignity. If any royal did leave graciously and in a dignified manner, I too think think most people would understand.

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Apr-21 10:42:12

The concept of the false dichotomy; that there are only 2 options and we better stick with what we have because the alternative is even worse. Or "most" people are happy with what's there so let's not rock any boats

Why is it not possible to have a discussion of a good presidency or a modified monarchy?

Callistemon Fri 23-Apr-21 10:45:44

I didn't say it out loud but I think it would have been perfectly understandable if they had done just that.
But no, they didn't.

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Apr-21 10:48:40

Can we just not talk about how wicked H&M are, just for one day? sad

Abdicating monarchs, what about that?

I thought false dichotomies would be interesting....

Callistemon Fri 23-Apr-21 11:01:45

It's not up to me to decide what posters talk about.
I have never said they are wicked, I understood why they did what they did but not why they felt the need for the Oprah interview.

Chestnut Fri 23-Apr-21 11:03:15

jacqrose It is also unfair and undemocratic in the 21st century that the people do not get to choose their head of state.
But we all know what happens when the people get to vote on anything. Those who don't agree with the result whinge and moan for the next three years about how ignorant people are and how they have made the wrong decision! So how can you ever trust the ignorant serfs to choose their head of state?

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Apr-21 11:03:46

Nor me. It was a plea, not an instruction. ?

False dichotomies? Anyone?

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Apr-21 11:05:37

So how can you ever trust the ignorant serfs to choose their head of state?

Oh, that democracy, its not all its cracked up to be, is it? Benevolent despots, that's what we need.

Callistemon Fri 23-Apr-21 11:06:28

jacqrose Fri 23-Apr-21 11:17:12

"the ignorant serfs" vote for their MPs and if they don't like how they are represented they don't vote for them again. Democracy I think they call it smile
