The Queen and dedication to duty in the 21st Century

Does dedication to duty overwhelm any other consideration when it comes to being Head of State?

Why can a person stay in post, with all the deference that entails, when someone else is doing all the "work"?

Is anyone else worried that a 95 year old lady believes she has to keep on keeping on when many, many other monarchs have moved on in life and their countries haven't crumbled?

"the ignorant serfs" vote for their MPs and if they don't like how they are represented they don't vote for them again. Democracy I think they call it smile

But if the serfs are too ignorant to choose wisely then people like that Smith person in the video will still not be happy because the people will have chosen wrongly (according to them). People like that will never be happy.

Chestnut when I vote in a general election the Tory in my area always wins. I may not be happy about it but I accept it. It's just tough if you don't get the person you prefer elected but at least we get to register our preference. Surely you can't be against democracy

Many people complain about Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, the Brexit result, and a large number of different members of the Cabinet. That’s what democracy gave us. I’m not complaining about any of them, or agreeing with any of them, just pointing out that with democracy there will still be people who complain and dislike the result.

I’m certainly not against democracy, but it’s limitations should be acknowledged. It would be foolish to imagine that if we voted for a president rather than have the monarchy, then everyone would be happy.

False dichotomies? Anyone? grin

You may accept democracy jacqrose but as we know a lot of people will never accept anything other than the result they want. Welcome to 21st century democracy.

maddyone Surely you are not saying that we shouldn't give people a choice because some of them wouldn't be happy with the result?

Really, is that what you think? Holy smoke.

I guess that's an offhand swipe at Brexit. You know, that one-off irreversible change to our constitution that was only voted for by a quarter of the population?

This is what democracy means to those who have really never had it.

No, I’m absolutely and categorically not saying that. I’m saying that some people will be unhappy and dissatisfied whatever the status quo or whatever the result. It’s the nature of people, you can’t please all of the people all of the time, as pointed out by John Lydgate.

maddyone he also said empty vessels make the most noise and I guess that applies to all of us here sometimes smile A good note to leave it on.
