The Queen and dedication to duty in the 21st Century

Does dedication to duty overwhelm any other consideration when it comes to being Head of State?

Why can a person stay in post, with all the deference that entails, when someone else is doing all the "work"?

Is anyone else worried that a 95 year old lady believes she has to keep on keeping on when many, many other monarchs have moved on in life and their countries haven't crumbled?

Anniebach

I say she has a deep faith because I believe she does have a deep faith

Fair enough but you said nobody can know her thoughts!

I don't think the Queen will abdicate - Charles would just be seen as a substitute rather than the real king.

How could there be that massive and solemn coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey with the Queen present, or even laid-low at Windsor? If an hereditary monarchy is to mean anything, you can't pick and choose, IMO.

Britain is getting a new anthem!

No even if the Queen gets too decrepit or gaga to do anything she will still be queen. That’s how monarchy works. Charles and William will do the waving and hosting, she’ll be cosseted and well looked after.

Grandma70s Wed 21-Apr-21 08:12:35

She’s 95 today!

Jabberwok Wed 21-Apr-21 08:22:24

No you can't crown another monarch while the current one is still living unless that still living monarch abdicates. A regency could be put in place but needs parliamentary approval to be activated. I can't believe that all these highly educated people on here don't know that.

Jabberwok Wed 21-Apr-21 08:23:20

I hope her majesty has a peaceful day.

Alegrias1 Wed 21-Apr-21 08:27:01

In other news, water is wet.

Anniebach Wed 21-Apr-21 08:53:15

I wish The Queen a peaceful day , so pleased she has her puppies with her, unconditional love

Grany Wed 21-Apr-21 09:02:30

The queen has 5 ladies in waiting none paid they are wealthy been with her for years to help with bathing and dressing.

Anniebach Wed 21-Apr-21 09:04:24

Not true, Ladies in Waiting do not assist in bathing and dressing.

Grany Wed 21-Apr-21 09:21:09

Their responsibilities differ from managing the Queen's wardrobe to helping Her Majesty bathe and attending official duties with the monarch including funerals and remembrance services.

henetha Wed 21-Apr-21 09:51:22

Long live the Queen. Age doesn't come into it. She is already stepping back and letting Prince Charles etc, take on more duties. But she is still the Queen.

Anniebach Wed 21-Apr-21 09:57:23

Are you confusing Ladies of The Bed Chamber ?

Callistemon Wed 21-Apr-21 09:58:20

I think all these historical films have a lot to answer for!
?

Anniebach Wed 21-Apr-21 10:01:50

Or that fictional series The Crown

Alexa Wed 21-Apr-21 10:42:26

I bet the Queen well knows she is a popular figurehead. As such her age is irrelevant whether she is a beautiful young woman or an aged matriarch. Few celebrities have been or are such enormous personalities as Queen Elizabeth. She is therefore very important to most of her subjects whatever age she happens to be. She stands for more than mere duty.

Alegrias1 Wed 21-Apr-21 10:56:44

I ain't no subject. Probably, neither are you.

I see they're not allowed to retire either.

Oldwoman70 Wed 21-Apr-21 11:01:48

I don't think she will abdicate but I do think she will hand over more and more of the duties to Charles and William. Personally, I would like to see William take the throne next as I don't think Charles has the same affection of the general public as the Queen and William have - but I know that isn't how it works.
