You can Google sleaze about governments as far back as the 1800’s if you’re short of something to do.
I didn’t do that, however I spent my afternoon with some ex Labour voters in an interesting meeting where the reasons for women leaving the Labour Party were aired. Wish I’d known before yesterday.
Can anyone find me any instance where telling people they’re stupid or wrong, on the TV, in the press, social media or even in real life will make them think you’re right and make them want to change?

HIRING surged in April as the economy reopened sending vacancies soaring at the fastest pace in 23 years.

Demand for staff is rising in almost every industry, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG, with IT and computing jobs leading the way as the shift to online and remote working looks set to stay.

Businesses are also keen to hire engineers, accountants and financial specialists, and hotel and catering staff.

It means that the worst fears of a huge spike in unemployment, caused by the deepest recession in more than 300 years, may yet be avoided.

The only industry that has not seen an uptick in vacancies is retail, despite a reopening of the high street. However shops are still bringing back workers from furlough, which may be dampening demand for new employees.

PippaZ, you just do not get it, do you? It is not about what you and I think the Conservatives have or have not done, it is what the people who vote for them think they have or have not done.

You need to consider that the things that matter to you and show all the iniquity of the Conservatives may be issues that many voters do not give a toss about and what concerns them are issues of no interest to you.

Perhaps more importantly would be to ask those exLabour voters, now voting Conservative, what is it about Labour that stops them voting for it. Much of that, I think, may be about what Labour is, rather than its policies.

One of the interesting insights that came from all the interviews on the radio this morning was one with Peter Mandelson, who spent time canvassing door to door in Hartlepool and used to be their MP. He said that while everyone keeps going on about Brexit (see further up this thread) no-one brought it up on the door step. The two things everyone wanted to talk about were 'the two Cs' - COVID and Corbyn.

BANK of England Governor Andrew Bailey has hailed the fastest recovery in modern times as Britain surges back from the worst recession in more than three centuries.

Boris doesn't insult the electorate by calling them 'mad and stupid' (Lib Dem candidate) if they vote for another party; he may act like a buffoon on occasion but he doesn't think voters are; he has a record of achievement: Mayor of London, Brexit, landslide election victory, vaccination programme, steering through the pandemic whilst suffering himself, is patriotic, has dogged determination, tenacity, makes mistakes but gets going again, is far more astute than people realize, has a positive attitude and he doesn't patronise.

I also like Keir Starmer, and I hope he gets tough with the old guard who are doing everything they can to undermine him .

Of course he thinks voters are mad and stupid or thoughts along those lines. Have you heard the riddle of the two twins at a cross roads? Well Johnson is the one who can only lie. If you ask him if he thinks the electorate are mad and stupid all he can do is lie!

I agree. I think Thatcher has been the most honest PM we have had.

One of Thatcher's former PPS's thought that there was a whiff of corruption around her over the contract her son Mark won for his company with the Sultan of Oman. She apparently asked this PPS to ask Mark to stop using his mother's name in his dealings in the Middle East. Mark was rumoured to have received a bonus of £12 million from his employer. When the news of this broke Dennis Thatcher decided that it would be best if he left the country.

The win is the easy part. Delivering what has been promised is more difficult, especially if what is delivered doesn't meet the expectations of the voter.

Well, we’ve got that new multi million pound room at Downing Street so Johnson et all can answer questions put to them by the news media. Oh, hang on a minute, they’ve decided not to go ahead with that in case they get asked awkward questions.

What have the Tories "done" since they came to power? Seriously, other than dealing incredibly badly with the pandemic until the NHS et al took over, and upgrading a flat they have sort of got "Brexit Done" but we have a long way to go yet. Oh, and they have promised everyone who votes for them that they will find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. No idea who owns the gold or how to climb a rainbow but the "too posh to fail" Johnson doesn't care about facts - just making sure his propaganda promises get out any passing voter.

In all the puffery on the radio about why Labour lost Hartlepool, I did not hear anyone asking the people of Hartlepool why they voted the way they did. It was just one pundit after another, one Labour geriatric after another.

The Conservatives are doing what the electorate want. Labour aren't. It is that simple, now go out and talk to them, show them respect and find out what they do want and develop non-ideological policies to do this.

The amount of intellectual arrogance on this thread is astounding. The things being said about 'ordinary' people, The disgusting discussion about IQs and their distribution,with all its undercurrents of the electorate in Hartlepool and other such constituencies voting the way they do because they are so stupid. Posters on this thread obviously assume they are in the clever half, perhaps they need to rethink this.

I think it’s all that a few Labour supporters can come up with though.It’s like a displacement activity for them, turning the conversation away from the unpleasant reality( for them )of Labour voters being turned off Labour.It must be a comfort to want to revel in superiority (their own) real or imagined.It makes for unpleasant reading though.

The electorate will be asked and their answers will be analysed to an inch of their lives. It is far too soon to know the answer, although of course we are perfectly entitled to speculate, and that is exactly what people are doing.

Whether the Tories are doing what people want you can only possibly know that as this parliament progresses.

What is has done for Teeside is to “get Brexit done” although we know that it is far from done yet.
The second is to claim success for the vaccination ,programme - I leave you to your own opinion as to whether that claim has merit.

With regard to job and economic security, together with good welfare services the jury is very much out on that one and that is what will make or break any government in the mid-long term.

People seem totally content to have voted in a morally bankrupt pathological liar with a penchant for dressing up in a variety of uniforms and quoting the classics while he dodges every question and bizarrely every bullet! The Vote Leave Government has managed to pass off all the damage due to brexit as covid damage.

The most worrying thing is that so many voters appear to ignore facts. They prefer empty promises and three word slogans.

I hope we can learn from the USA. You can fool some of the people for some of the time but, even with the distortion of FPTP, it is still possible for a sensible politician to win.

Hmmm, since on GN, posters post facts showing that mainly the uneducated voted for Brexit, that would imply that the educated sat on their educated rear-ends and didn’t vote. So is it the educated young we need to hold responsible?
