What an absolutely ludicrous threat by Annick Girardin. I’m not a Brexiteer, but I cannot think of any way to defend this.

Ellianne there have been several risible mentions of various wars on this thread ( not by you) in addition to examples of a complete lack of understanding of Jersey’s position politically, constitutionally and in other ways. Generally, those who know and understand least have been on the side of Jersey and Johnson and those of us who understand most ( irrespective of any personal connections with France) realise that the situation is nowhere near as simple and clear cut as that and that many factors are in play.

Yes! We are a splendid, world beating nation, we are the 5th wealthiest nation in the world and we produce the vast majority of our own electricity, although at the moment about 6% is imported from France.
I imagine Norway would want to supply us with electricity as they are a leading exporter of it.
If they are offering better prices, terms and conditions to supply some of our electricity, I should imagine that would be the reason we are considering importing from them instead of France.
We would not be not crawling to Norway, as you so charmingly put it, we would be trading with them.
You know!
Like the world trades with each other.
And as for the bizarre comment about Norway’s fish! I have no idea why they won’t let us share their fish but why should they?

Je connais bien Bretagne.
It's la Bretagne actually.

Alegrias1 Sat 08-May-21 09:27:32

??

Ah well, all my arguments invalidated because I forgot the definite article. Oh, la honte....

Lucca Sat 08-May-21 09:31:14

Alegrias1

Ellianne you didn't, somebody else did.

Et oui, j'habitais Nantes et je travaillais comme lectrice a l'universite. Je connais bien Bretagne.

Your point?

Sorry, don't know how to do accents on my phone

The accents you just hold down the letter and accent options appear as if by magic. Voilà

Merci Lucca

Thank you suziewoozie for making that clear.
It might have been better if the war comment had not been associated with the quote from my thread.
For the record my father was Jewish.

Au coin des pinailleurs
Very much so Lucca. Seems like a sport on here!

It means nit-picking for those posters who want to know.

I'm sorry I offended you Ellianne.

Maybe we can both point out to the posters who think it relevant to use the war in arguments about the French that this is entirely inappropriate.

No probs Alegrias I converted to Catholicism to marry a Frenchman!!

However, I agree with you, not just in threads about wars with the French, but calling people Hitlers in their job as on another thread here today.

I do wish that there was a 'heavy sarcasm' emoji.

Here's another informed article to shed light on the affair

Love his style but also a great explanation and analysis.

The article tells us what we already know. Seventeen French fishers have not provided the correct paperwork to obtain their licence.
So instead of doing what they should do, they block St Helier harbour, ram a Jersey boat, some entered the harbour and some Jersey residents were afraid they could try to damage fishing equipment in the harbour.
The Uk is constitutionally responsible for the defense of Jersey.
So we sent in two Royal Navy boats to calm things down, which they did as the French scarpered when they arrived.
What would you have us do MaizeD,
leave Jersey to it?
Frankly, I think the French behaved deplorably.

Ellianne Sat 08-May-21 12:05:59

I think it is more than just a bit of paperwork. In my experience the French are brought up on a diet of form filling in triplicate and rubber stamping documents very much by the date required. The issues here run into far deeper waters.

Namsnanny Sat 08-May-21 12:34:36

The issue runs into far deeper waters
Could you explain a little more please Ellianne?

Ellianne Sat 08-May-21 12:45:13

Sure Namsnanny I was being a bit poetic.
What I mean is that it is for the ministers to sort out, not just for the average French fisherman to sign his document.

Buffybee Sat 08-May-21 13:06:47

Ellianne, you’re wrong, it is for the French fishers to provide Jersey with proof that they have historical rights to fish there.
The twenty three who did that were granted the licenses the ones who didn’t provide them did not.
How can Ministers sort a French boat owners paperwork out for him.
Ludicrous!!!!

GrannyGravy13 Sat 08-May-21 13:07:50

Ellianne

Sure Namsnanny I was being a bit poetic.
What I mean is that it is for the ministers to sort out, not just for the average French fisherman to sign his document.

I read that 41 licences have been granted. The 17 that have been refused were due to not filing the details of their previous catches correctly and in several cases no details at all.

Namsnanny Sat 08-May-21 13:11:30

Your right ofcourse, but if a) the fishermen dont fill out the paperwork and b) it takes forever to go through all the differing depts.,the ministers wont be able to sort it and tempers will flare again.
A bit silly to bring into the already complicated situation talk of stopping electricity.

Namsnanny Sat 08-May-21 13:17:15

I've always read that the French hate the bureaucratic nature of their gov. and rebel whenever they can.
Apparently there is a lot of unnecessary paperwork in all walks of life.
Must be tedious.

Mamie Sat 08-May-21 13:24:38

I think that is an over-simplification Namsnanny. Traditionally there has been a lot of paperwork, but I wouldn't say people hate it. We roll our eyes and get on with it. Far more is done electronically now - I even have a prototype vaccine passport on an app on my phone, uploaded after the second injection!

Mamie Sat 08-May-21 13:30:42

Listening to the fishermen speaking on the French news it seems more complicated than just not filling in the paperwork. There were people who had filled it in properly and ended up with something totally incorrect when they received the permit.
