What an absolutely ludicrous threat by Annick Girardin. I’m not a Brexiteer, but I cannot think of any way to defend this.

Our parents were so much wiser than us in understanding the need for working together to keep peace

Spot on!

References to Marine Le Pen are important in this context. Her father who founded the FN was from Brittany, La Trinité sur mer. Fishing is of course one of Brittany's biggest employers and it is no surprise the Le Penn is targeting this sector for votes. This afternoon she is in her homeland visiting an oyster yard. She knows the territory and the struggles in this field better than sleek Macron. Her roots are here and she will have ample opportunity to make her voice heard on the subject here. She has some way to go to convince Bretons living in the big towns but on the coast and inland, whether we like the thought or not, we have to acknowledge she is gaining support.

I was born and brought up in Guernsey. Fishing has always been a mainstay in the Channel Islands. Many islanders depend on fishing for their livelihood. As per usual what Boris says is not what Boris does and the assurances he gave the UK and Channel Islands fishermen pre-Brexit deal were not carried through. Hence where we are today.

I believe that Guernsey is not the problem here but that Jersey are being deliberately provocative. What amazing timing ??

.....and do you “like” ?

JenniferEccles Thu 06-May-21 09:15:33

I didn’t say I support her. I was just using her as an example of what could happen in upcoming elections.
Although it’s still quite early days since we left, France along with other European countries will have seen in us just what can be achieved outside the lumbering bureaucracy of the EU.

Threatening to cut off tiny Jersey’s electricity will not have gone unnoticed.

You didn’t make that clear unfortunately. I doubt you understand the grievances with Jersey ( which is not part of the UK or EU and is a tax haven which facilitates the lessening of our tax revenue) . Maybe you think it’s fine for French fishermen to lose their livelihoods and they should just suck it up? Jersey are asking for it and will back off once BJ tells them to - when polls close tonight ?

JenniferEccles Thu 06-May-21 09:29:31

An interesting post on Marine’s background Ellianne.

Support for the EU is not universal across all European countries, and it’s perfectly obvious that they will all be watching our progress with interest.

Any opposition party which taps into this disenchantment of the EU by promising an in/out referendum if elected could cause an upset to the old order.

Latest Ipsos opinion poll has Macron beating Le Pen by 57% to 43%. I don't think supporters of the far right should get too excited yet.

The French voting system for President allows anyway for tactical voting. This has stopped the far right so far from getting the Presidency even though it’s meant the left have had to hold their noses whilst voting

Mamie Thu 06-May-21 09:44:42

Exactly suziewoozie. As my U3A students say to me "we will complain about him and then we will vote for him again". I think he could be vulnerable to a good moderate candidate, but no clear contestant yet. As for the French being impressed by Brexit - um I don't think so.

Gannygangan Thu 06-May-21 09:47:28

French friends are not keen on Macron. They're not keen on Le Pen either.

Quite interesting FT article here.

A rejection of elites. Feelings of injustice. The desire to ‘take control’ of one’s country’s destiny.”

Seems it's not just the UK who are tired of elitism.

I don't think that ultimately it is about liking or not liking Macron. The French take politics and political debate pretty seriously and would not view it as a popularity contest.

NotSpaghetti Thu 06-May-21 10:36:18

Just heard a Jersey fisherman on the radio saying the majority of his colleagues in Jersey are supporting the French fishermen as they “depend on each other”.
Wish I could link it to this discussion.

Suzie you are woozie. Jersey and the Channel Islands are not havens. They are part of the British Isles and to have been threatened is not good. You are unpleasant in your attitude of “Who cares about the Channel Islands “

dogsmother Thu 06-May-21 11:19:32

I meant Not Tax Havens. You should actually do research on this.

They are tax havens and not part of the U.K. - the British Isles are not a political entity. Woozie yourself

suziewoozie Thu 06-May-21 11:33:32

Nothing is going to happen to Jersey - they will back down shortly on the fishing permits having provided a photo op to please all the Little Englanders.

I have family who have lived on Jersey for nearly fifty years they own properties there. They don’t consider Jersey to be apart of the U.K. at all and they never have. They came here in the past to have hospital treatment because it’s superior here. (Their words) however they complained because they had to pay!. I think they should have to pay they have paid taxes to State of Jersey not to U.K.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-May-21 11:52:20

A lot of companies trading in the U.K. have company addresses in Jersey.

Yes of course because it’s a freeloading tax haven

dogsmother Thu 06-May-21 13:03:44

No! There is a list of tax haven, the Channel Isles are not on it.
Simple as that. I’m not technically savvy enough to post links or I would.
The Isle of Man is as much the same just less of a climate.
It has a huge financial industry much like London and perhaps that’s why folk get confused.

Do you mean this one? Number 27.

MaizieD Thu 06-May-21 13:16:12

Perhaps dogsmother is looking at a different list? hmm
