Free Movement of people agreed with India in exchange for Deal?

Mamie Wed 19-May-21 12:21:53

I am at a bit of a lost to understand how our taking advantage of freedom of movement to retire to another EU country happened "at the expense of others"?
DH spent many years before that working in EU countries, but living in the UK, working for a British company, bringing revenue into the British economy.
Can someone help me understand what we are supposed to have done wrong?

Thank you everyone with your comments ?
I don’t get angry, I just laugh at the comments.
It comes as no surprise from this poster.

"This poster" unlike the above, put forward a generalisation. I was talking about luck not about MerylStreep.

On the other hand just look at how many personal "nasty" comments have come my way.

Callistemon Wed 19-May-21 11:37:07

Can I just point out (again) that those who benefited from membership of the EU did it at the expense of others.

And working for the EU has made some people extremely rich indeed.

This is GN at its worst. Genuine kind people are castigated for just wanting to help less fortunate people. Shame on you all.

Isn't it just!!!

Sorry. Late at night. Of course she didn’t ! That’s why it irritated me that she was being used as an example. Thanks Maizie..

Oh, no, I wasn't using durhamjen as an example of a leave voter, sorry. She was a staunch remainer as far as I remember.

I should have made it clear, it was the attitude to risk she posted about.

^I do to seem to remember durhamjen supporting brexit though^

I don't think she did, MayBee

No, she didn't

But the risk taking analogy has always stuck with me

Who was it mentioned playgrounds? Whoever it was I agree with them!

Envy! You're just jealous!

Oh, you're nasty! Oh, you're bitter!

Can we even try to have a conversation where it doesn't get personal?

Probably not.

I mentioned playgrounds.

I am off now, not flouncing just things to do, continually going round in circles gets us nowhere, just wears us down.

It isn't "nasty" or any other baby word. All luck is at the expense of someone else. When people see themselves as self-made, they tend to be less generous and public-spirited so it is worth describing yourself in this way to opt-out of the need to see how your "luck" was made.

Alternatively, it wasn't luck but a probability. In which case it had nothing to do with the persons own ability.

If someone describes themselves as "lucky" suggesting they have no culpability, indeed suggesting they are better in some way then they should expect others might see this differently.

All luck is at the expense of someone else....utter nonsense!
You come across as a very bitter individual. I am sorry though that you appear to have had no luck in your life.

PippaZ Wed 19-May-21 10:33:37

Everyone thinks that what is good for them is good overall.

Do you really believe that everyone is that blinkered or is that just an excuse? I am quite sure many - not all but many - are not, although even some of them will chose to turn a blind eye to the consequences.

Peasblossom Wed 19-May-21 10:28:27

Lured back in ?

Peasblossom Wed 19-May-21 10:26:48

Everyone defends what suited them. And complains about what doesn’t,
Everyone thinks that what is good for them is good overall.

‘Twas ever thus on GN. Nothings changed.
We have to accept that there are some very bitter people out there who just despise people with money.
Btw to all those people: I didn’t steal my money from anyone.
Like most of us we worked hard and got lucky.

Well said Meryl
Any mention of a purchase/lifestyle which unknowingly is outside another posters financial status has always been deeply frowned upon on GN with unwarranted accusations of boasting! Are we supposed to know such status of all posters? Who knew?

nanna8 Wed 19-May-21 10:17:36

That comment from Pippa was uncalled for and just plain nasty and I think she owes you an apology, MerrylStreep. The assumption that anyone who has done well in life has done it at the expense of others is just arrant nonsense.

I don't think everybody with a bit of money got it at the expense of anybody else.

I do think that telling people they are bitter, envious or anything else without any basis whatsoever shows a little bit of shallowness in one's understanding of other people's motivations.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 19-May-21 10:07:45

PippaZ what a nasty remark you got lucky at the expense of others. !!!

You have no idea how MerylStreep is in a fortunate financial situation.

Again, speculation and a tad of envy is not an admirable trait in anyone?

The problem is, and always will be, that you got lucky at the expense of others. But hey, that doesn't matter, does it.

Lucca

So we’ve agreed the new rules are down to Brexit yes ?

Too simplistic though really Lucca smile. This country decided to Brexit and in doing so became a "third country". These rules apply to all third countries.

So all those who are complaining but voted to leave did not know what they were voting for or they would not be complaining now.

So the rules are because we chose to be a third country. I didn't and over half the population didn't. Some of the countries in the UK didn't but we now know that some of those that did had not bothered to understand what it meant.

So, if they want to look like they knew they are going to have to stop blaming "anyone but themselves". That person doesn't exist.

"Twas ever thus"....you mean all those posts about the Good Old Days on GN aren't true. shock

Who are you suggesting stole their money MerylStreep ?
Not me I hope. The things people say on GN, honestly.

(off to nurse my wrath to keep it warm.....)

GrannyGravy13 Wed 19-May-21 09:50:24

Alegrias1

Who accused you of that GG13?

Many people do good deeds but not all of them tell everyone about them on public internet forums.... smile

Nothing at all wrong with that of course....I'm just trying to sort out what (who) we can criticise and what (who) we can't. Although I'm being disingenuous really....I know the rule hmm

Nobody accused me, another poster has been though.

I just find it rather like a school playground at its worst!
