I am not allowed to be sad because someone else is living in a situation much worse than mine, its nonsense.

If we had an elected head of state might we not (heaven forbid) end up with someone like Farage?

Indeed we might Maybee, just think, Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Tony Blair, Nigel Farage, Theresa May, Margaret Thatcher, the odious (to me anyway) Emmanuel Macron, or any one of a host of people who we may or may not like, or who may be useless at the job, or war mongers, or underhand/ dishonest, or many other reasons why they would be unsuitable. Thank heavens we don’t need to elect a President and that our Head of State has little power and is simply a figurehead.

"perhaps it's just that no-one I know relates to these views."

Well nobody I know voted for Brexit, yet here we are.

Anniebach

She can recover from the death of a loved one in 40 days, good for her.

A child walking behind his mothers coffin is one of the saddest
things she has seen ,lucky her, the saddest thing I have seen is
mothers clawing through pit sludge to find the bodies of their
children.

Absolutely Annie. I’m not Welsh but I saw these scenes on television as a child. That memory has stayed with me to this day.

FGS! She only said that it was ONE of the saddest things she had seen.

I'm deeply conscious that living through the Aberfan tragedy must have been indescribably traumatic. But belittling other's experiences by holding them up against that event and judging them to be wanting is really unfair.

Callistemon

I do enjoy her articles mostly.

But this one is a load of piffle or perhaps it's just that no-one I know relates to these views.

.....a load of piffle......

This made me laugh Callistemon.

What exactly is a President for? It’s a serious question. Grany?

We're not the US.

I repeat. The knowledge of constitutional matters displayed on here is woeful.

maddyone Sat 22-May-21 09:38:54

When I saw who wrote the article I wasn’t surprised at her views. She’s a very biased person in my opinion.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 22-May-21 09:38:11

Plus there are lots of talented intelligent honest people to choose from who could become our President

Really Grany ?

The applicants would have to be financially comfortable to run a Presidential campaign, and be in a profession / job which would enable them to have 4/5 year garden leave. Which probably rules out a high proportion of the general public leaving only the wealthy and privileged to apply.

Might as well stick with the wealthy and privileged family we have.

Grany Sat 22-May-21 09:29:19

Our president would have limited terms of office and represent the people. The PM would be in government Unlike queen who with queen's consent has a veto on over 1000 laws including thoses that affect her own private interests plus her layer stopped a transparency law allowing the public to see her wealth. She also lobbies ministers so does Charles on a regular basis.

The monarchy is broke can't be fixed. The monarchy is corrupt in public office for private gain. Secretive, above the law unaccountable. The RF spend public money every day of every week on their own interests hobbies leasure time.

The monarchy gives the government too much power with no checks or balances and stops any reforms, The H o S is useless and pointless. So RF are there to spend public money do not work for our constitution they are celebrities there for their own benefit not ours, a waste of space.

On YouTube there are 1 minute shorts videos from Republic Campaign

Plus there are lots of talented intelligent honest people to chose from who could become our president.

MaizieD said it much better than me!

Peasblossom Sat 22-May-21 09:08:39

No, probably not. It just keeps itching at me.

Alegrias1 Sat 22-May-21 09:08:36

Peasblossom

I mean, I get Monarchy is the new religion thing.

But Brexit?

She just says this is what life is like in Britain today. A Britain that voted for Brexit and is run by Tories. The word "Brexit" appears once.

Those who are a bit touchy about Brexit and Tories being blamed for everything might see that as more than she intended, I think. I don't mean you Peasblossom

MaizieD Sat 22-May-21 09:04:21

Peasblossom

Somebody please tell me what Brexit has to do with religion. and the Monarchy.
Why would leaving the EU prompt someone to change their religion?
It’s the weirdest juxtaposition ?

I think that talking about 'post Brexit Britain' is a rhetorical device (if you can apply that term to the written word). It has no meaning apart from placing her comments into a time context and isn't really worth subjecting to deep analysis ?

GrannyGravy13 Sat 22-May-21 09:01:13

Yasmin who vowed to leave the UK for good if Boris Johnson won the election, he did and she is still here?

I did quiet enjoy her articles / interviews but she seems to have lost all perspective of late.

Peasblossom Sat 22-May-21 08:59:24

Nope, still don’t get the analogy.

Take a couple of minutes to help me out?

Might be her, no surprise, she dislike much about this country, including the Royal Family, view, give no credence to anything she writes.
What about the Family he is maligning, what about their mental health, with no outlet to reply publicly.

Alegrias1 Sat 22-May-21 08:52:58

Gannygangan

When I was young I didn't care about the Royals. No interest at all. Most of my peers would have felt the same.

However, now I'm getting on a bit I'm quite happy to have a monarchy.

The young are starting to see what the reality is and things are changing.

Just what I would have said in my late teens, early 20s, Alegrias1

That's exactly how I felt Gannygangan, I had no interest in the royal family whatsoever growing up and beyond that. Whilst I wouldn't call myself an ardent royalist now, I feel quietly supportive of a slimmed down royal family.

Alegrias1 Sat 22-May-21 08:48:19

It's an analogy. It's not literal.

The Princes walking behind the coffin, not the saddest thing, but I remember thinking at the time how wrong it was.
