GB News will attempt to shake up the broadcasting landscape when the news network launches its TV channel in early June.

The news service, spearheaded by veteran broadcaster Andrew Neil, has announced plans to go live on Sunday June 13.

In a tweet, the channel said it would launch at 8pm with a special programme, 'Welcome to GB News'.

I can’t wait!

Well GB News is obviously achieving its goals if this thread is anything to go buy.

If something/someone annoys me I tend to avoid it/them, makes life far more pleasurable.

Should you avoid commenting on the views of those who are changing your country to the far-right? I suppose many do.

Andrew Neil does a great 5 min slot on GB News called
Woke Watch ??

I watched a bit, I did. Know thine enemy, you know.

God, it was awful. He preaches, doesn't he? Is he a son of the manse?

Whitewavemark2 The Clangers are pleased to accept your apology and are delighted with the soup. They do wonder though could there be some people around who can't tell left from right?

?. Quite a few

GB News viewing figures for first days are higher than BBC News or Sky according to The Guardian and other sources (I just googled) despite broadcasting teething troubles

Could just be the curious, to early to tell (in my opinion)

Alegrias1 Tue 15-Jun-21 16:27:58

Hmm...

^GB News had a 1.1% audience share over the 7pm to 11pm period, versus 0.9% for BBC News and 0.4% for Sky. However, the ratings of all news channels on Sunday were dwarfed by those of the main channels, with BBC News at Ten commanding a 30.6% audience share.

I find it extremely offensive that PippaZ keeps mentioning the far right here, when she knows perfectly well that the far right is responsible for war crimes, atrocities and ethnic cleansing. They are mass murderers.

To be centre right or right wing is not the same as the far right! There is a huge difference. Please keep a check on the language used here.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 15-Jun-21 16:35:35

I didn’t put the BBC/ITV news data in my post, just like for like news channels.

Only time will tell if this new channel is a success.

“ Well I don't like people being ridiculed. I'm pretty sure you won't find posters insulting and ridiculing left wing people in that same nasty way.”

I would like to tune in, just to compare it with other news channels, but there are no subtitles. Therefore it’s inaccessible to deaf or hard of hearing viewers

Lin52 Tue 15-Jun-21 16:58:31

So at the moment, Simon McCoy, interviewing John Nicol, about his experiences after being captured, and his ensuing mental health problems. Very right wing. A reporter speaking from a part of Wales that never gets a mention in main stream media, very right wing. Not seen any incitement to murder, anything against immigrants, or other ethnic minorities, just reporting on, as well as main news, other things that are affecting ordinary people on a daily basis, oh gosh yes, even sport.Just so many on here showing hatred against those who do not agree with their point of view. Of course those that don’t , they give a label. There was a good discussion on taking the knee, and why not pray, are we all expected to follow like sheep and not have our own opinions. Sure a few on here will be calling me an old granny as they did another contributor, but I know me, they don’t, thank goodness, I will leave them basking in the supercilious manner of their supposed intellectual superioriority.

growstuff Tue 15-Jun-21 17:21:27

Is there any reporting from/about other countries or politics or economics?

Lin52 Why be so defensive? If you're interested in the things you mention, fine. However, some people aren't. Why the inverted snobbery?

Chestnut. I am very aware that the centre-right is not the same as the far-right. Right-wing is just a generic term that includes both. I pointed out the differences on the right in one of my posts.

It is reasonable to assume those who use the language and tactics of the far-right have a reason for doing this. You may not like it being said out loud, so to speak, but that doesn't stop me from having just as much right as other posters to put forward my views.

Lucca is quite right. I put forward evidence of the use of far-right tropes that are being used here. I'm sure this wasn't the only forum that called people communists at the time of Corbyn, etc., etc - completely free of any evidence to support such accusation. I have not pointed the finger at anyone only at the stereotypical language and methods - some of which are supported and repeated here.

I went to view that disgusting video of the mob chasing a BBC journalist through the streets of London. It was shocking. It was hosted on a You Tube channel calling itself Resistance BG and offering "Independent Journalism", you can probably imagine the rest of it.

You know how You Tube algorithms try to guess what else you'll be interested in? Well right down the RHS of the screen, lots of links to GB News. Obviously the overlap between the GB News audience and libertarian extremists is expected to be quite high.

I saw this too.
Really shocking to watch this happening here in the UK. And with the links too... awful.

In case anybody wants to search, it's Resistance GB.

It really is the pits when a journalist is abused like that. One of the characteristics of a healthy democracy is a free press, which it cannot be when journalists are bullied by mobs. Maybe people shouldn't be so complacent when they criticise countries where journalists are hounded.

growstuff Tue 15-Jun-21 17:33:14

Bread and circuses are a tool of authoritarianism. I would like to see a strengthening of genuinely investigative journalism.

The far right isn't just responsible for war crimes, atrocities and ethnic cleansing. Those are the extremes. The far right is also responsible for extreme social conservatism, undermining rights and much more.

A selection of words /phrases that irritate me:
Woke brigade /PC brigade/haters

What irritates me is the way people endlessly ridicule anyone or anything they feel is right wing. It's the equivalent of putting them in the stocks and throwing rotten fruit at them, a barrage of insults and put downs which never end.

This thread is full of it, and I think we can presume these people are 'left wing' by their comments.

Come off it! Not necessarily on this thread, but GN is full of ridicule of left-wingers.

Ever since i joined anyone who didn’t wholeheartedly approve of the conservative government was called a leftie, and often loony leftie.
Anyone who wasn’t massively interested in the royal family was called a republican anti monarchist.
Anyone who dated to show support for Black Lives Matter was a member of the “woke brigade”.

Guilty as charged, which is strange because I really am not a woke loony leftie, anti monarchist whinging traitor.

This was possibly linked with GB News because GB News did show some footage of an anti-lockdown demonstration (I don't know if it was the same one). Why was that? It was an attempt at balanced journalism, because as they pointed out the mainstream news channels sometimes do not cover certain demonstrations including anti-lockdown. Giving balanced journalism and covering things that the other channels ignore is one of the aims of GB News.

growstuff Tue 15-Jun-21 18:38:49

I certainly hope that GB News and Resistance GB aren't linked. Resistance GB is a home for rabbit hole dwellers, which I'm hoping GB News isn't.

The BBC and other media sources have also reported on the anti-lockdown demo and abuse of Nick Watt. The Met is investigating. Some of the abusers have been identified and probably shouldn't be named, in case there's a court case.

GB News would probably be well-advised to ignore it because it certainly doesn't present anti-lockdown supporters in a good light. So much for factual, unbiassed reporting!

Chestnut Tue 15-Jun-21 18:51:43

So the BBC and others are showing the anti-lockdown demo because it shows the supporters in a bad light? That says it all really. I am no supporter of anti-lockdown and have never heard of Resistance GB but I do think GB News should be applauded for showing what the other news channels don't and for trying to give a balanced view.

Lucca Tue 15-Jun-21 19:01:03
