Brexit, Polls have turned, not just one, but all of them, but one
(354 Posts)GNHQ have commented on this thread. Read here.
And this over a long period of time now. This year only, we are at 74 to 1.
The Labour Party have asked me to embrace Brexit. I can certainly accept that it has happened, but I will never ever embrace it.

We voted out, we’re out. Why do people still keep on about it? I didn’t like many election results but I accepted the outcome. We will be better off in the long term, we’re already signing up to new trade deals. And let’s not forget that had we still been a member we wouldn’t be so far ahead in the Covid vaccinations.
Groundhog Day.
Does nobody read the posts that come before?
BTW - you get another election in about 4 years, you get to change your mind.
There are those grumbling that this isn't the Brexit they voted for. The rest of us can tell them that this is the Brexit we voted against. It's all a hideous and utterly foreseeable disaster.
My daughter works in the import and export department of a large company and she tells me that the paperwork for exporting of goods to EU countries used to take around 10 - 20 mins. Since Brexit it can take up to a couple of days. She says it is a nightmare and that is only one company. She has also had to go on many courses to learn about all the new legislation. Sounds like a shambles!

*We certainly won't be going back into the EU* Who is the "We" in this statement? As an Independence supporting Scot, I fully expect that some time (I hope soon) Scotland will be rejoining the EU.
Absolutely! England may accept this self-inflicted wound but Scots have a real opportunity to save ourselves.
The EU is ‘leaving the light on’ for us to come home. This fight isn’t over and I don’t accept anything about Brexit.
Lin52 Thanks for the link, which I read - but I did find this little extract interesting:
"The auditors’ main criticism wasn’t that the ministry paid for outside expertise. Rather, it was about the way contracts were awarded."
Now it might just be me, but it reminded me of Johnson, Hancock, et. al. - what do you think.
Lin52 ?! Oh just watch them disagree! I for one am really thankful DH and I have had both vaccinations as I too have friends in Germany and Spain who said they are envious of our vaccine rollout. If we had still been in the EU we’d still waiting and a lot more lives would have been lost. The EU have behaved like spoilt children in many ways and they can stick their bureaucratic nonsense where the sun doesn’t shine!
Groundhog Day
their bureaucratic 'nonsense' as you call it- has quadrupled and much more- see fuseta's post and reports from importers and exporters of every type of goods. And it is because we chose to insist on it- having borders, and all that (real) nonsense for goods instead of a single market.
Spoilt kids are those who insist that their choice should not count- and that borders should only be closed one way. The EU is quite rightly protecting itself against an unfair Brexit.
As for the vaccine- those who have chosen to gazump existing contracts and pay over the odds - are those who behaved very selfishly.

The scandal relates to a period when he was German Defence Minister - not to her time in the EU.
The saddest aspect of this to me, apart from actually leaving the EU, is the division it has created in UK society and between the Uk and the rest of Europe. I'm also sad for our grandchildren who seemed destined to grow up with a negative view of our nearest neighbours and in many respects a similar, but in this case justifiable, view of our own country.
Gazumping? We didn’t ‘dilly dally’ in the first place and ordered and paid for the vaccines long before those in the EU. I for one am eternally grateful. As for an unfair Brexit I agree - but not from the angle you are coming from.
compared to the shenanigans of Johnson and co- this pales into insignificance- and it was a very long time ago, way before she was ELECTED to preside the EU.
It would be nice to stick to polls and opinions changing- as there are so many threads on Brexit already. But...
I wonder how these feel now, as it seems so many voted for it and they are being hit very directly

The pain to the brain is mainly felt in Spain, home to 285,000 of the 485,000 Brits in the EU. Those who have failed to register their residency must now pay an extra 5% income tax - 24% to 19% - compared to EU nationals and have been told they must obey the ‘90 in 180’ rule. That means, like ordinary tourists, they can only stay in the country for 90 days within every 180-day period.
Ex-pats who stay under the radar and chance it “face potential deportation or a ban from the country should they outstay their welcome,” said tax lawyer Leon Fernando Del Canto. “There is zero leeway.”
From the New European.
Those who have been turned down for the vaccine are those who have not got their registration and health insurance in order. They should not have been turned down- in fact, because the vaccine helps the spread and protects all, same as for illegal immigrants in the UK. But they will be turned down for health treatment from now on- and they are probably not insured either as they live in Spain under the radar long term.
When they do face enforced return to UK, they will of course need housing and health care, and most are over 60. Where and how will they be housed, and what about pressure on the NHS?

Well ... errr ... exactly! I won't comment on the backgrounds of some of the people who have been "elevated" to the House of Lords.
PS. Von der Leyen isn't that popular in Germany.
PPS. I see "smearing" people is still the name of the game.
Kali Not only that ...
My sister and her husband, who recently bought a house in Spain, have been refused health insurance at the last minute, so have had to abandon their plans, so won't be eligible for residency. My brother-in-law has had a heart attack and has two stents and was assured that health insurance would be fine, although he'd have to pay a premium. Unfortunately, he was called for a medical and has been refused completely. If the UK had still been in the EU. he would have been covered by reciprocal arrangements.
I am French, lived in UK for 35 + years and now am back in France.
Brexit is an utter disaster and I could weep.
On a personal level, I am scared to get back to the UK to see my daughters in case I get stopped at border controls. We haven’t got an address in the UK anymore and I hold a French passport.
We have had to get my DH French residency whilst he waits to apply for French nationality. This will much easier and cheaper for him than me applying for UK nationality.
So the person saying it doesn’t affect Brits in Europe is very wrong.
I am so sad that our grandchildren will not have the opportunity of joining the Erasmus program which their mothers benefited from. After empty promesses of being able to stay in the program, a new British one was concocted, but terribly expensive for most students. And of course travelling freely will be so much harder.
I would like someone to show me what positive results Brexit has brought.
And no, not the trade deals, The UK already had them.
And no, not the vaccination as every country in the EU had the choice to go alone.
I just feel so sad.
Brexit was voted on, the result accepted by our Government and acted on! Then Covid struck! We should not be looking backwards but forwards! Whinging about past decisions will not help our Country recover from what has been a global disaster - both in terms of people's wellbeing and the economy. Let's at least try and have a positive attitude!! Snipping at one another on a website is futile - use your energy more productively to build a better society for young and old.
Well I must be in the minority but so glad we were out of the EU so we could be vaccinated so quickly unlike our friends living in the EU. Also I do not like to be bullied by unelected bureaucrats. Sorry folks but hope Scotland does leave UK and joins EU that will save money for England Northern Ireland and Wales.
Can we just stop using the word "Whinging"? Its insulting and is clearly intended to stop people disagreeing with the user.
I'm sure the Gran who just told us how much her life has been changed by Brexit just needs to toughen up, eh?
As for telling us to use our energies to build a better world. Who do you think you are?

Don't even get me started on the Scotland thing. Saying what you said just shows how little understanding you have of this whole situation. The sooner we're gone the better.
Have we taken back control NO. Are we any better off NO. Have price’s increased Yes Food Yes.Fuel Yes.
Will the EU survive doubtful.
There was plenty of information available if people took the time to read it, but it was the slogans on buses and 'shaky' information that was pushed into the limelight that much of the country heard and saw.
What is the point of having Gransnet if people are shot down for having their own opinions? A debate should be open to all and all opinions considered. Some people on here seem to think they own or rule it where is the democracy in that. There are some very nasty comments being banded around at the moment and one person even being made to feel she is not going to join in for a while.
Children's playground stuff we all need to air our comments without feeling inhibited or Gransnet is rendered useless.
I'm not against a single free market but I am against the EU having rights over how we govern our country. I voted to remain even so as I am certain that we were too late to go it alone after being in Europe for so long. They are being entirely spiteful over the whole thing which is what I expected.
Opinion: The EU are being spiteful
Fact: The EU are treating us just like any other 3rd country, which is what we are now.
Everyone is allowed their opinion, but if its based on misconceptions or prejudices, they're going to get called out on it Yammy
