Brexit is fast becoming a disaster

HMRC have published some figures to show that food and drink exports fell by 2bn in the first 3 months since Brexit.

Dairy was down a massive 90%? and there were losses across the board.

The figures show that rather it being a teething issue as the Tories would have us believe it is in fact structural and likely to continue unless there is some sort of move towards say the SM.

Spider crabs being renamed Cornish king crabs to make them more appealing.

I love Spider Crabs, really tasty.

According to the BBC report sales have gone up since they started using the new name. Not sure they are going to convince enough of us to make up for the exports they've lost.

I'm allergic to shellfish so I can't do much to help.

I read today that due to driver shortages there are likely to be shortages of Haribo in the UK. Haribo shortages in the school holidays... smells like riots to me

Rishi Sunak has announced that the UK has failed to do a deal with the EU allowing the financial services sector access to EU markets. This is a HUGE blow! Business with the EU has been worth billions to the sector and dwarfs any other trade deals or "dead cats" such as Haribo. It's an even bigger loss to the UK than fishing and farming.

It’s a train wreck.?

So the government can hand over millions to foreign firms like Nissan but they are ignoring the financial sector which has underpinned our economy for decades?

So the government can hand over millions to foreign firms like Nissan but they are ignoring the financial sector which has underpinned our economy for decades?

During the Brexit campaign the UK was under the illusion that they had “negotiating power” - they didn’t, they had to take what ever the EU offered. The EU has a set of regulations that benefit THEIR members they were never going to compromise, the financial services is just another casualty of Brexit.

Financial services did not like the EU rules on money laundering and regulation, any money coming into the UK would be under much more scrutiny. They can now handle dodgy investments that would not be allowed in the EU.

The NE is getting investment despite Brexit, Nissan is closely allied to Renault so you can be sure the French government approved the deal.

MaizieD Fri 02-Jul-21 07:59:14

Renault owns 43% of Nissan. I think it's very amusing that we're bribing the French to stay in the UK.

The French are very heavily involved in the UK, EDF supply a large amount of electricity and a lot of big name companies are French owned. The French government is much more supportive of industry than the UK

growstuff Fri 02-Jul-21 11:46:56

Katie59 Financial services are much more than the dodgy dealings of certain people who wanted to avoid EU rules. The vast majority of people involved in financial services were in favour of remaining in the EU. The UK has already lost billions of pounds worth of trade to EU financial centres and is going to lose many more billions. Replacing legitimate financial services with dodgy offshore companies won't benefit the UK Treasury.

There must be some HGV drivers in the 5million + who have applied for residency. www.gov.uk/government/news/landmark-eu-settlement-scheme-reaches-five-million-applications

I wonder where the 5mil+ came from when everyone keeps tell us that they’ve all gone home. Either they are lying or the gov.uk website is?

Katie59 Sun 04-Jul-21 19:03:43

These are “applications”, not approvals, how many actually do travel is not known either. At present travel is restricted due to Covid so it is very early days, current labour shortages are not going to be improved for some time.

Why the Brexit deal is a disaster for the City. Jobs and investment are pouring out of London as the economy’s biggest sector waits for clarity on a deal that is anything but finished.

Thanks, you beat me to it- oh the irony !!!

I have said ti many times before, if you want to be a fully independent country, don't sell the majority of your essential utilities and services, including transport- to those you turn into your competitors- and even 'enemies' by not adhering to contracts and Treaties signed with them. This even more so if you are an island who rely on good transport links to your nearest competitors!

Most of the family silver was sold off years ago because of short term political gain, it is still being done the new Power Stations and Windfarms are being paid for by foreigners, and we send all the profit overseas AND we don’t retain any technology for the future.

Madness

You have to feel sorry for the Swiss.

Katie59 It's the 40th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher privatising off shore oil. The Norwegians kept their supply state owned and I believe that they are still benefiting from ownership of their offshore oil.

It's also the 4oth anniversary of the Brixton riots. Some lessons were learned in the aftermath but seem to have been forgotten now.

lemongrove Mon 05-Jul-21 14:18:06

Meryl...I never feel sorry for the Swiss.?

It’s six months in, that’s all, six months! Ye Gods.
Country going to hell in a handcart? Errr, No.

GillT57 Mon 05-Jul-21 14:39:01

Absolutely agree Dinahmo, the Norwegians invested theirs in infrastructure, future proofing their energy etc., while the UK government squandered theirs to keep taxes done.

varian Mon 05-Jul-21 16:52:27

The Norwegians used their oil revenues to set up a national fund, from which all their citizens are benefitting now and to invest in renewable energy.

Margaret Thatcher squandered much of the North Sea oil revenues on right wing political projects like stockpiling coal imported from Poland to defeat the miners and shutting down most of our manufacturing industry to attack trades unions, fuelling a huge rise in unempolyment. (At one time during the 1980s the Royal Statistical Society censure the government for redefining unemployment nineteen times.)

At the same time rampant privatisation termed by "selling off the family silver" meant short term gain but long term losses for the taxpayer. So what should have been invested in our future was instead used to advance the conservative party and enrich many of their wealthy donors.

Kali2 Mon 05-Jul-21 17:26:32

Totally MerylStreep- the same applies to all countries- not just the UK- especially islands, and especially those stuck in the middle with shared borders with so many

growstuff Mon 05-Jul-21 18:01:53

Hmm ...

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/hgv-shortage-brexit-covid-haribo-b1877588.html

Call in the army to prevent food shortages? What? I thought that was all Project Fear.

How come news of food shortages has reached MPs and the food industry but not some GNers? Surely they're not wearing their masks on their eyes (or something).

Kali2 Mon 05-Jul-21 19:39:56

I agree Lemon ''It’s six months in, that’s all, six months!''

we have not yet been hit by the full force of Brexit yet, it is in fact days since the 30.06.21.

Callistemon Mon 05-Jul-21 19:55:00

Haribo shortage!

It can't all be bad news.
Sorry, DGC!

Being independant is costly, as the Swiss are finding out, as we will in the near future, neighbours don’t have to give us a free ride, they want paying for cooperation.
