Brexit is fast becoming a disaster

HMRC have published some figures to show that food and drink exports fell by 2bn in the first 3 months since Brexit.

Dairy was down a massive 90%? and there were losses across the board.

The figures show that rather it being a teething issue as the Tories would have us believe it is in fact structural and likely to continue unless there is some sort of move towards say the SM.

Katie59 Financial services are much more than the dodgy dealings of certain people who wanted to avoid EU rules. The vast majority of people involved in financial services were in favour of remaining in the EU. The UK has already lost billions of pounds worth of trade to EU financial centres and is going to lose many more billions. Replacing legitimate financial services with dodgy offshore companies won't benefit the UK Treasury.

Renault owns 43% of Nissan. I think it's very amusing that we're bribing the French to stay in the UK.

The French are very heavily involved in the UK, EDF supply a large amount of electricity and a lot of big name companies are French owned. The French government is much more supportive of industry than the UK

So the government can hand over millions to foreign firms like Nissan but they are ignoring the financial sector which has underpinned our economy for decades?

During the Brexit campaign the UK was under the illusion that they had “negotiating power” - they didn’t, they had to take what ever the EU offered. The EU has a set of regulations that benefit THEIR members they were never going to compromise, the financial services is just another casualty of Brexit.

Financial services did not like the EU rules on money laundering and regulation, any money coming into the UK would be under much more scrutiny. They can now handle dodgy investments that would not be allowed in the EU.

The NE is getting investment despite Brexit, Nissan is closely allied to Renault so you can be sure the French government approved the deal.

It’s a train wreck.?

Rishi Sunak has announced that the UK has failed to do a deal with the EU allowing the financial services sector access to EU markets. This is a HUGE blow! Business with the EU has been worth billions to the sector and dwarfs any other trade deals or "dead cats" such as Haribo. It's an even bigger loss to the UK than fishing and farming.

muffinthemoo Fri 02-Jul-21 00:11:55

I read today that due to driver shortages there are likely to be shortages of Haribo in the UK. Haribo shortages in the school holidays... smells like riots to me

Spider crabs being renamed Cornish king crabs to make them more appealing.

I love Spider Crabs, really tasty.

According to the BBC report sales have gone up since they started using the new name. Not sure they are going to convince enough of us to make up for the exports they've lost.

I'm allergic to shellfish so I can't do much to help.

So fresh fruit and veg are running out and Truss is trying to invoke the war spirit by saying tinned food is as good as fresh and let’s all enjoy it.

She can stuff it up her a…s

In the last three days I have been to our large Sainsbury’s and the local Farm Shop no empty fruit and veg shelves?

theworriedwell Thu 01-Jul-21 16:46:15

According to local news on BBC last night the fishermen in Brixham can't sell their fish. Apparently we don't like the fish they catch, well not all of it as 75% was sold to the EU. Mind you Brixham voted for brexit as far as I can remember, the fishermen were very in favour back then.

My hairdresser was saying that the hotel in which her husband works are desperate for decent chefs as they have all gone back to the EU.

I’ve read that is true right up to the Michelin star restaurants.

Katie59 Thu 01-Jul-21 14:56:45

It’s not just performers that have problems, all sorts of companies have problems now finding workers, so expect big price rises on all many things we all buy.

Greta Thu 01-Jul-21 14:55:14

I believe this clarifies matters:

^”Amid growing uproar in the U.K. over post-Brexit travel for touring musicians, Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, said the British government had rejected a clear offer from Brussels to carve out a special deal for performers.

EU officials have said British negotiators refused to consider a chapter on "mobility," citing the U.K. government's intention to end freedom of movement after Brexit. The draft chapter on "Mobility" proposed by the EU was absent from the final trade deal reached on Christmas Eve.”^

If our government insisted on ending free movement I guess they were unwilling to compromise.

I read somewhere that the U.K. govt was asked to keep the flow of performers rights across the EU and they refused - possibly why Frost looked uncomfortable!

Dinahmo Thu 01-Jul-21 13:35:58

Unfortunately Frost is not as good as he was cracked up to be, including by some GNerswho sang his praises.

Greta Thu 01-Jul-21 12:51:53

Yes, varian he looked and sounded very much like him. It's becoming increasingly clear just how much our ministers/negotiators did not realise.

I must learn to spell charisma:
charisma, charisma, charisma, charisma, charisma.
That should do it.

varian Thu 01-Jul-21 12:33:51

Is that the same Lord Frost who said he didn't realise that if we left the EU, then the EU would treat us as a non-EU country?

Greta Thu 01-Jul-21 12:16:19

Last night I watched a DCMS select committee session on EU visas for creative workers with Lord Frost. I know this is 'old news' but it is worth reminding ourselves just how difficult life has become for the performing arts. One conductor, who travelled freely without visas only two years ago, now needs all sorts of documents, certifications, translations, health insurance etc, i.e. the industry is swamped by red tape. He needed four 90 day visas and each visa cost £490.

Lord Frost's reply was that he was sorry that artists are finding it difficult but the country took the decision to leave the EU and to stop free movement and that's what the government has tried to deliver on.

To me Lord Frost came across as uncomfortable and almost sheepish. He may be adept at using tactics at the negotiating table but carisma he has not.

theworriedwell Thu 01-Jul-21 08:58:11

He just didn't have a big enough oven. Not his fault obviously, he had the deal oven ready, someone should have sorted the oven for him.

Katie59 Thu 01-Jul-21 07:59:34

“Oven ready deal” - they did not have a clue how wide reaching the regulations would be, at least it avoided a border within Ireland.
It’s not just the EU regulations either there is a lot of new UK regulations added on too.
