Brexit is fast becoming a disaster

HMRC have published some figures to show that food and drink exports fell by 2bn in the first 3 months since Brexit.

Dairy was down a massive 90%? and there were losses across the board.

The figures show that rather it being a teething issue as the Tories would have us believe it is in fact structural and likely to continue unless there is some sort of move towards say the SM.

Actually I expect that it is all in Essex.

No, it's not OK in Essex angry. Tesco petrol station (only petrol station in this town) was taped up and had no petrol, nor did the next one (BP). I must have driven 30 miles today to find some - good job I didn't leave it until the last minute.

It beggars belief what kind of person can be a happy bunny while this sort of thing is going on.

Inflation next. Going to hit the poor undoubtedly.

Wonder how far this is going to be tolerated before people say “enough”?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 03:27:46

I’m down to less than 1/4 tank so can’t afford to go far to get more.

Bloody hell.

Still my little camping gas stove should be arriving so at least I can make a cup of tea in the middle of winter when the lights go out.

The petrol shortage is apparently because we don't have enough tanker drivers.

vegansrock Fri 24-Sept-21 07:37:48

Never mind some people are happy bunnies as there’s “more job vacancies” - yes in care homes, nursing, driving trucks, picking vegetables , funny those vacancies aren’t being filled by Brexit voters - but they’re so happy food is rotting unpicked, shortages in shops, care homes closing, huge backlog in NHS, panic buying of petrol…

Yes plenty of job vacancies for jobs that no British want hence the shortages of drivers, care workers, fruit and vegetable pickers

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 07:46:42

Project reality in all its brexity glory.

Nice isn’t it?

Urmstongran Fri 24-Sept-21 07:52:22

I’m sure there was a thread recently that discussed the shortage of HGV drivers? Nothing to do with Brexit but a change in the tax code for lorry drivers which saw the numbers plummet. And blaming Brexit for the NHS shortages in the middle of a pandemic when anyone but Covid was hardly treated. That is stretching reality to silliness. Brexit is such a handy peg isn’t it?

There's some irony here. I've heard Johnson and some other ministers going on about some long-term plan to upskill people, so they earn more and don't need Universal Credit. They also go on about the record number of vacancies. However, most of the vacancies are for low-paid jobs, for which people don't need upskilling, but do need Universal Credit to survive. Apart from the fact that training providers apparently haven't heard about the courses they're supposed to be providing, none of it makes any sense.

I repeat Project Reality.

Everything forecast and labelled as project fear is now becoming project reality.

Or if you prefer dogmatically chosen chaos.

Covid is throughout the world and every country is finding difficulties but none more so than the U.K. with the added and self inflicted shot in the foot Brexit.

For goodness sake Urmstongran. Of course, Brexit has been responsible for many HGV drivers returning to their home countries. I don't even understand your thinking about the NHS. Plenty of people have been treated for non-Covid related conditions during the pandemic and staff have been working flat out. Again, a number of EU staff have returned home or decided not to come in the first place.

Urmstongran Fri 24-Sept-21 08:00:45

And Boris is saying that these unskilled workers ought to be paid more. Funny that someone thinks they can own a business, pay poor wages then think the taxpayer (us) should top up those wages with UC.

Begs the question ‘should some of these employers even be running a business in the first place?’.

Urmstongran Fri 24-Sept-21 08:03:06

Seen the backlog of cases the NHS has WWmk2? So many.
?

vegansrock Fri 24-Sept-21 08:06:27

Just when is Johnson proposing to raise the minimum wage and force employers to pay more?

vegansrock Fri 24-Sept-21 08:08:08

I don’t think seasonal fruit pickers claimed UC, they mainly sent money home and moved around to other countries seasonally. Now, no longer welcome here they are staying away.

Yes if you lived here near Brighton you would be watching and reading that the consultants have announced that due to lack of staff etc patients are no longer safe in the wards and elective surgery must be moved elsewhere as clinicians can no longer cope.

Reason?

Tory cuts over the past 10 years compounded by clinicians and hospital staff returning to the EU. - Brexit.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 08:46:39

The Europeans are telling the truth. There isn’t a single other country in Europe who is suffering from petrol and HGV driver shortage

Yes it is, there is not a petrol/diesel shortage. It is the lack of HGV drivers which has necessitated some filling stations to close temporarily.

One of our local University Hospitals is busy (non-Covid), it is trying to clear some of the backlog of the last eighteen months.

Patients are presenting later at GP’s (if they can actually get an appointment) hence by the time they get to see a hospital doctor their conditions are more advanced/serious.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 09:00:51

We are the only country in Europe suffering such difficulties.

I see the government is still trying to flog the pandemic as the cause.

Funny I thought that the pandemic was world wide not just in U.K.

Every hospital is trying to clear the backlog. That is their job, but there is little that they can do if the staff shortage is so severe that the patients in hospital are deemed unsafe.

Labour shortages in Germany and no doubt other nations quite likely due to Covid restrictions.

Yes the labour shortage is beginning to spread, not just in Europe.

Alegrias1 Fri 24-Sept-21 09:32:37

Germany's problems are due to an aging population and changes in technology. so they introduced a system for attracting more immigrants which has not been as successful as hoped due to Covid.

The UK's problems are due to a misguided government and population who think that Johnny Foreigner is out to get their job, so we have to stop them coming here, so let's pull up the drawbridge. Covid? Well, nobody could see that coming, its not our fault.

Checking up on unemployment figures which is not straightforward it seems there are 1.5m unemployed plus nearly 9m “economically inactive” (not seeking work) in the 16 - 64yr age group.

That seems an awful lot of working age people!.
