Brexit is fast becoming a disaster

HMRC have published some figures to show that food and drink exports fell by 2bn in the first 3 months since Brexit.

Dairy was down a massive 90%? and there were losses across the board.

The figures show that rather it being a teething issue as the Tories would have us believe it is in fact structural and likely to continue unless there is some sort of move towards say the SM.

I repeat Project Reality.

Everything forecast and labelled as project fear is now becoming project reality.

Or if you prefer dogmatically chosen chaos.

Covid is throughout the world and every country is finding difficulties but none more so than the U.K. with the added and self inflicted shot in the foot Brexit.

Yes plenty of job vacancies for jobs that no British want hence the shortages of drivers, care workers, fruit and vegetable pickers

There's some irony here. I've heard Johnson and some other ministers going on about some long-term plan to upskill people, so they earn more and don't need Universal Credit. They also go on about the record number of vacancies. However, most of the vacancies are for low-paid jobs, for which people don't need upskilling, but do need Universal Credit to survive. Apart from the fact that training providers apparently haven't heard about the courses they're supposed to be providing, none of it makes any sense.

I’m sure there was a thread recently that discussed the shortage of HGV drivers? Nothing to do with Brexit but a change in the tax code for lorry drivers which saw the numbers plummet. And blaming Brexit for the NHS shortages in the middle of a pandemic when anyone but Covid was hardly treated. That is stretching reality to silliness. Brexit is such a handy peg isn’t it?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 07:46:42

Project reality in all its brexity glory.

Nice isn’t it?

Never mind some people are happy bunnies as there’s “more job vacancies” - yes in care homes, nursing, driving trucks, picking vegetables , funny those vacancies aren’t being filled by Brexit voters - but they’re so happy food is rotting unpicked, shortages in shops, care homes closing, huge backlog in NHS, panic buying of petrol…

NotSpaghetti Fri 24-Sept-21 07:09:36

The petrol shortage is apparently because we don't have enough tanker drivers.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 03:27:46

I’m down to less than 1/4 tank so can’t afford to go far to get more.

Bloody hell.

Still my little camping gas stove should be arriving so at least I can make a cup of tea in the middle of winter when the lights go out.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 03:25:36

Inflation next. Going to hit the poor undoubtedly.

Wonder how far this is going to be tolerated before people say “enough”?

Actually I expect that it is all in Essex.

No, it's not OK in Essex angry. Tesco petrol station (only petrol station in this town) was taped up and had no petrol, nor did the next one (BP). I must have driven 30 miles today to find some - good job I didn't leave it until the last minute.

It beggars belief what kind of person can be a happy bunny while this sort of thing is going on.

Petrol now. Went to get petrol yesterday and Tesco was all taped off.

Huge queue in Sainsbury’s so didn’t have time as meeting friend. Must get some today or will be stuck.

vegansrock Fri 24-Sept-21 02:16:24

Are you also a happy bunny about the negative impact on the fishing and farming industries? The shortage of lorry drivers/ care workers/ hospitality workers? Price rises and shortages? The red tape and bureaucracy for businesses meaning many have gone out of business or have shifted to the EU? The sheer cost of the whole exercise - double the cost of being a member and counting?

I’m still a happy bunny about Brexit. My life hasn’t changed dramatically but I see changes that I like creeping into the UK system. More job vacancies, better rates of pay on offer.

The Brexit argument gets tedious though. With all due respect it’s been 5 years now. Like a game of debating ping-pong.

We were part of the EU for 45 years (I think?). We’ve been out for erm ... 9 months? It’s early days folks. And the sky hasn’t fallen in Henny Penny!

Urmonstongran. Still whistling in the dark eh? Oh and by the way, I don't hate you as you misquoted, I am angry at the mess you and others have landed my family with. Remember, tackle the ball, not the player.

Well, as one of the many on here who was told that I had lost, get over it, was told to be positive, told to wait, told I was unpatriotic etc., etc., I am still fizzing with anger at the mess we are finding this country in. Covid19 has been a convenient cover for the disaster that is Brexit, and it is becoming apparent by the booming silence from the previously vociferous Brexit camp.

We are just bored to tears with the constant whinging, that’s why the ‘Brexit camp’ are quiet Gill. Very few can be bothered with it.wink
It’s five years since the referendum, most people have moved on regardless of how they voted.

Such a shame that people who made such a fuss and upended the table with no clear plan ahead have turned out to have such a short attention span. Like a child tiring of a puzzle when it becomes too difficult for them.

^I am trying to decide who angers me more, the liar in chief or the fools who thought it worth having him in charge in order to achieve the economic, social and political disaster that is Brexit.^

Aw go on - hate away Gill57. I have broad shoulders....
Yes, I thought it worth voting for Boris. He promised to Get Brexit Done. No-one else was offering.

Urmstongran Are you pleased with how Boris is performing?
How do you think things are going now Brexit has happened? Do you think that Brexit is done or that we are just at the beginning of making a new world now Brexit has happened?

theworriedwell we will never know what the situation here in the U.K. would have been without the emergence of a Global Pandemic.

Which is why it is such a wonderful excuse for Johnson.

The biggest % of our gas comes from Russia.

Are you sure? In the stats I saw, Norway was our biggest supplier.

I understand 42% Norway

47% Russia?

growstuff Thu 23-Sept-21 17:38:15

Where does the UK get its gas imports?

MayBee70 Thu 23-Sept-21 17:32:13

I thought Norway was the biggest supplier of CO2. I’m use getting confused about just how many things this country is short of. The main one, imo, being a competent government….
