Rufus why have I got an advert for Christmas in July at the top of my GN page?
Have the Aussies taken over at GN Towers?

FarNorth Fri 02-Jul-21 23:57:18

I hope so.
The usual lot don't seem to be up to much.

I hope pedants note that I said 'different from ', not 'different to ' wink grin

I hope I am not a peasant. I did not notice that you used 'different from'. Had you used 'different to' I would have noticed that

I thought that I would include the malapropism - it was a deliberate attempt at humour.

I don't wish to introduce a sour note into these joyful proceedings but my pedant post was not particularly aimed at you and I don't have a clue what you're on about hmm

Lots of people say 'different to'. It pains me greatly ?

Callistemon If only! hmm
I'd be in charge and you'd better watch it; you'll all be singing the following refrain every morning before breakfast and no commentary about not liking Bing Crosby!
All together now!

"You've got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with Mister In-Between

You've got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene"

That's good! grin

Oh no gentle lady, I was not stridently and indignantly refuting you, I replied to say that I had not noticed, but had you used 'different to' then I would have noticed.

I decided to try to add humour by using the peasant/pedant malapropism.

I always used to use 'different to' as it is widely used and I had not thought about it, until some years ago I saw somewhere that it is wrong, and so since then I always use 'different from', because that is clearly more logical, as one goes from something that one wants to avoid rather than to it.

Please notice how I try to use 'one' rather than the widespread way that people use 'you' rather than 'one'.

Another thing that I notice is the way some news anchors on television use 'firm' and 'company' as if they are synonyms and thus lose precision. That seems to be because they try to avoid using the same word twice.

Anyway, here is a jolly video.

This is odd - I thought I posted on here this morning in response to Whitewave and MaizieD about us all keeping quiet so that GNHQ don't notice us.

Perhaps it was another thread?
If not, the posts have totally disappeared
Or I am slowly losing the plot.

(Please note my split infinitives for which I make no apologies.)

Where in your post is there a split infinitive?

Even if there were a split infinitive, there is nothing wrong with that, it is part of English.

I enjoyed that, ElderlyPerson !

When I am using my computer I sometimes, as now, have YouTube on in the background, playing the selection that they call My Mix.

The My Mix is a sequence of videos that I have watched previously and some others in a similar genre that I have not seen before popped in amongst them.

I have several instantiations of the Google Chrome browser open and so can listen to the music while doing other things. If something pops up I can have a look at the YouTube video.

This one popped up a short while ago.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd16sNr9T2Q

I had not seen that one before and watched it.

At the moment, this one is playing.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=isvt802U8BY

I had seen it before, it is well worth watching because there are bits in an ice rink and one of the orchestra musicians is also an accomplished figure skater and is featured in both ice rink and orchestra.

Relax! Nothing to worry about! It was Aussies doing a trial putsch of GNHQ! Watch out for the big one! hmm
They even took brief control of your brain making you see split infinitives where none exist! Pretty Awesome! hmm

For our next trick we're going to delete the OP by Johangirhossain; I think we've all had time to memorise it, now that we are all fluent in Portuguese! grin

I just tried a test.

Log on to YouTube.

Search for

My Mix

then play it.

It appears that a different My Mix will be generated each time.

One of the My Mix lists started with this one.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNxSWRszSZw

Number 5 in the list was this one.

Readers might know the English version of Lili Marleen, sung by singers on the Allied side.

But here is the English version that the Germans broadcast to Allied troops in North Africa, which has different lyrics.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0P_m7SZBvQ

The lyrics of both the English version are different from the original German.

BlueBelle Please be careful about that which you say because you are in danger of inciting those who would destroy the status quo just for the hell of it! hmm
At the moment they're concentrating on voicing their opinions in the "I hate sport (soccer) thread!
