Decent MPs - who do you rate?

Hi everyone
Just listening to my MP Margaret Beckett speaking on LBC.
I’ve got so much respect for her.
Who do you have time for?

GranJan60 Fri 23-Jul-21 12:36:51

Interesting that so many on here rate the same people. Although IMO there is not much of a choice of decent MPs now. Unluckily we have a completely useless nodding dog who is uninterested in any local problems and only speaks out on Gay Rights and legalising drugs in the knowledge that he’s in a safe seat. If only people weren’t so passive!

When I was 16 I decided that most MP's were useless and here I am, 50+ years later and nothing has happened to change my mind. For a start none of them seems able to give a straight, simple, answer to a straight, simple question.

Having said that, Liz Truss seems to be doing a decent enough job signing trade deals.

I really can't think of any mp of any party that I can honestly say I have confidence in. They all seem to be just there to score points over each other they are frightened of the media and bow down to them all the time . Boris is blustering along Starmer is on his knees the lib dems and the green party well they haven't a clue what's going I can't watch the news anymore cos I fear I will throw something at the TV sorry rant over I'm going to have a G& T

Shazmo24 Fri 23-Jul-21 13:13:16

Not mine - Luke Hall (Con) waste of space
Although I dont like Labour I do like Jess Phillip's....she tells it as it is and having worked in a woman's refuge she is one who speaks out about women & violence
She also has honestly stated that she hasn't been able to fulfil what she wants to do

Local MP to us, who rolls her sleeves up helps her constitutes. All round good egg Penny Mordant, she could even be a future leader of her Party.

Having said that, Liz Truss seems to be doing a decent enough job signing trade deals.. Sorry, I know we are all entitled to our opinion, but she is one of the biggest fools amongst the kingdom of fools, an absolute waste of space!

Yvette Cooper always comes across as calm and intelligent, but maybe it is easier to be so when you are not in the bear pit of front line politics.

As I think GN is getting far too political, I refuse to comment.

Totally agree with you re Liz Truss! She is making colossal mistakes.

Gill I wasn’t certain whether or not the Liz Truss fan (*EEJit*) was having a laugh

The MP in the Constituency adjacent mine I have been trying to contact for almost a month. I have written emails, left numerous messages with WHY I would like to speak with him - it concerns a 100th Anniversary of the start of Somerset's Agricultural Education in September - but have I had the courtesy of an acknowledgement? No!
Nothing. Phone calls to his Parliamentary desk are diverted to the constituency office with no follow up.

So I am not electing him as an ideal MP.

I will write to the guy who is my MP and see how it goes! But I am not holding my breath.

Coco51 Fri 23-Jul-21 13:31:42

None of them. It’s been recommended that they get another above inflation pay rise and sod the rest of us. My occupational pension rose by 11p (eleven pence) per MONTH!

Riggie Fri 23-Jul-21 13:32:00

Grany

Jeremy Corbyn You know what he stands for
ZarahSultana
Richard Burgon

Zarah Sultana is my MP. Tbh I am not totally sure what she has done. She pops up locally from time to time but I've not seen her in action.

Another nearby one is Taiwo Otameni. Shes been helping my sons youth group with their current campaign so I have to say her!!

I hope so! In this current climate of politics irony is overtaken by reality. As Armando Iannuchi, writer on The Thick of It said; ' This was meant as a script, not a bloody manifesto'

We had a woman one up until about 4 years ago and she then retired she had been doing the M.P job for years and she was marvellous, she had her colleague who also done administration and knew every council, housing association, helped many in deprived area of the town to sort out housing benefit and assisted those going back into the job/workplace.
He was a top man and so far has been irreplaceable as he sadly passed away several years ago and greatly missed at that. As I said up thread the help I asked for from the man that took over has not even a quarter of the way lived up to them. Probably why I have little confidence in the new M.P
and he has his own agenda what he is interested in.

4allweknow Fri 23-Jul-21 14:03:53

Certainly not my MP. I have contacted him on an issue ie local transport with absolutely no response after 2 months. I have a brother who was involved in politics - MP - at one time. He gave up as he just could not tolerate the wheeling and dealing that went on in all parties. At times looking at the media reports given on the SNP there is a lot of that goes on between them and the Green Party. Eg SNP has a proposal, tells the Greens if they support them then they will be accommodated with whatever proposal they are arguing for. There must be some MPs somewhere who are solid and incorruptible.

lilydily9 Fri 23-Jul-21 14:04:44

Happy with my MP, Tim Loughton. He keeps us updated with his newsletter and is often seen out and about.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 23-Jul-21 14:15:50

Keir Starmer and Dawn Butler, both speak well and are calm and to the point. My own MP Liam Fox, well if I said what I really think of the him I would be deleted.

leeds22 Fri 23-Jul-21 14:23:47

Yvette Cooper and Margaret Beckett always come across as honest and well briefed. Rishi is my MP and tbh he seems a good constituency MP, despite having a few other responsibilities. Can't vote for him as he's in Johnson' cabinet and a brexiteer.

Ellie Anne Fri 23-Jul-21 14:42:40

Algeria’s Philippa whitford is my mp and I have a lot of respect for her. I also quite like keir starmer. But so many of them have no idea how ordinary people live and the day to day struggles they face. I was glad jo cox’s sister got elected. I’m sure she will do all she can for ordinary folk.

Comment of the week ???

Forestflame Fri 23-Jul-21 16:15:47

Only one. Jo Cox, who seems to have entered politics, with the aim of truly wanting to make a difference and make life better for people. A very sad loss.

effalump Fri 23-Jul-21 16:28:16

Any of the male MPs standing up for the plight of 1950's women who have been swindled out of approx. £45-50,000 of state pension. Strangely enough, not many female MPs. Could it be that they are comfortable with their MP pensions to look forward to.

Luckygirl Fri 23-Jul-21 16:47:38

My MP is a highly intelligent man with a charm bracelet of qualifications.

He is a very good constituency MP indeed. He has championed many causes.

But he is a Conservative and prime BJ yes-man. He has written many books - I do not know how he has the time and is also able to fulfill his parliamentary duties.

One of his books is called "Compassionate Conservatism" and he really sincerely believes in the truth of that title - how naive must he be?

His name is Jesse Norman. What a misguided man.

GrauntyHelen Fri 23-Jul-21 16:47:43

Mairi Black and Dawn Butler neither afraid to tell it like it is!

cupcake1 Fri 23-Jul-21 16:52:07

I have to confess none sprung to mind ?!
