Would the EU ever trust us and want us back???

Let's imagine the majority of people in the UK change their mind about leaving. Comes a new PM next election, who is pro EU and wants to negotiate a return, with the backing of a strong majority of the population, say 65% + -

what would the EU say?

As many headlines around the world have been saying this week- Can the UK ever be trusted again?

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 13:29:47

I would like a link to CNN story as I have just looked at three of their sites including the international one and can find no evidence of the OP’s story?

A band me member of Lynnard Skynnard has had heart surgery, Olympics, a Kennedy granddaughter to be made US Ambassador to Australia amongst other stories

Visgir1 Sun 25-Jul-21 13:36:11

I think the EU will eventually implode. Countries like Poland Hungary etc don't like being told what to do and will go.
I also believe the UK will be fine.
BTW.. I voted to stay in.. But respect the UK results.

There is one article (quoted by the OP early on) on the CNN Business page. The remarks about UK untrustworthiness are primarily from the two British people she quotes.

Maggiemaybe Sun 25-Jul-21 13:38:26

Winters and Usherwood.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 13:47:27

Thank you I have found it, the OP has selected negative comments only

The U.K. is a substantial economy and is an attractive trade partner in many ways quote from Simon Usherwood (Professor of politics and International Studies at the OU)

The above is just one of the positive quotes in the article.

Surely not! gringrin

Why do you want a link GrannyGravy13? You have given your once and for all opinion. You don't want to discuss it - or so you said. However, I would guess that you want it so you can attempt to disabuse the OP of her opinion - as we all often attempt to do on these boards. I would call that an "argument" in a debate/discussion. Which tells us that you do "do arguing".

In which case, I will repeat the fact is your "opinion" is a point of argument called a straw man also sometimes called an informal fallacy. This form of argument gives the impression of refuting the original point while not actually addressing the real subject of the argument but instead replaced with a false one.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 14:13:16

PippaZ what is your opinion on the OP?

No thoughts on the segment of the article I posted above?

I ask because we (GN posters) rarely get to know your opinion as your modus operandi is to pull other posters posts and views apart

That is simply not true GrannyGravy13. I often write - sometimes at length - on subjects that interest me that I think will interest others. You may not have read those posts. Perhaps you would be better, in that case, not to malign and smear.

I also start a reasonable number of threads. Again you may not read them although I have seen you get involved. However, as we have been discussing, you don't always discuss the OP if diverting it seems to work for you.

If you keep repeating the straw man posts, I will keep pointing out that is what they are. Had you said nothing about it, I would have left it there. You actually distracted me from reading through the other posts - but thats the point of straw men, isn't it.

PippaZ Sun 25-Jul-21 14:45:28

As you seem to have trouble either reading my posts or not rembering - I have no idea which GrannyGravy13 - I will repeat what I wrote earlier.

I don't think they would have us back as a full member of the EU, to be honest. Any agreement they come to with us will tie us up completely as they have no reason whatsoever to trust us. We have a government, run by a man who is not honourable, and this has translated into the world seeing us as a country without honour.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 14:45:29

No maligning PippaZ just asking for what your thoughts on the OP were, or indeed my snippet of the same article in my post of 13.47.

Your response is what I expected…

lemongrove Sun 25-Jul-21 14:45:35

It’s the amount of times you tell other posters that ‘theirs is a straw man argument’ PippaZ ....as if it’s a phrase you have found and are loathe to let go of.
Are you a fan of Wicker Man?

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 14:46:46

I apologise as I did miss your post giving your opinion, these things happen in love and war

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 14:47:40

Unfortunately due to its over use it has lost all relevant meaning lemongrove

lemongrove Sun 25-Jul-21 14:48:13

I can’t see another government ever applying to be part of the EU.
The UK cannot continue to have divisive referendums forever.

HolySox Sun 25-Jul-21 14:49:14

I think this is the article in questiom

edition.cnn.com/2021/07/24/business/brexit-deal-northern-ireland-gbr-intl-cmd/index.html

Is part of the problem that since Brexit the EU has tightened regulations to make it more difficult for some UK products to be shipped into the EU bloc? This is aggravating trade between mainland Britain and NI, that would give Boris grounds to renegotiate. Example requirement for vet certificate on individual food items, or something like that. Are the EU any more 'trustworthy'?

Kali2 Sun 25-Jul-21 14:49:49

The OP was not posted to discuss us going back or not- but about how recent happenings have hugely eroded trust in our PM, our Government, and sadly, on Great Britain as a whole- you and me included, however we voted.

lemongrove Sun 25-Jul-21 14:50:54

Of course not HolySox ...in fact after their behaviour around vaccines I would say they are a very untrustworthy lot.

lemongrove Sun 25-Jul-21 14:53:37

And here it is again from you Kali...’sadly, Great Britain as a whole’

Oh, I wonder why they did that?

Because we're not in the bloc anymore, I expect.

What did you think would happen?

lemongrove Sun 25-Jul-21 14:54:54

In any case your OP was very much about re-joining the EU.

Kali2 Sun 25-Jul-21 14:55:20

This is exactly what they say about the UK's behaviour re gazumping agreed contracts.

GG13, as I clearly quoted from CNN- I didn't think you would need the link. Glad you've found it- I have been decorating upstairs.

edition.cnn.com/2021/07/24/business/brexit-deal-northern-ireland-gbr-intl-cmd/index.html

Yes, it says positive things about GB, because it was for so long a beacon to the world, and a trusted partner, albeit always 'a bit different'. But what it is pointing to, is that this has changed recently, and not for the better. My interpretation, of course-but I wager that this is correct.

HolySox Sun 25-Jul-21 15:02:30

GrannyGravy13

PippaZ virtually every time I post my opinion on the N & P thread you post that I have a straw-man argument .

You fail to understand that it is my opinion, and just that!!! I do not do arguing

Are you being bullied GrannyGravy13?

It could be said I gave a 'strawman' comment by saying the EU would have us back purely on the grounds of dominion. They wouldn't need to trust us. Your comment is equally valid so I can't see any reason for PippaZ to be very critical about you. Perhaps she totally agrees and accepts my comment.

I think your comment was valid and sensible. Please continue contributing.

lemongrove Sun 25-Jul-21 15:05:58

Will it save time all round if I say... The UK is doomed, and we are all going to hell in a hand cart, the whole world is laughing at us, we will run out of food ( due to Brexit) everything about our nation is worse than it ever was in days of yore, we are a more racist nation than any other, Boris Johnson sits on a pile of gold ( wallpaper) like a dragon, most people live in sub standard housing ( shacks) and our football hooligans ( or English ones at any rate) are so bad that they put the wind up even Croatian supporters.
Job Done.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 15:08:43

Thanks lemongrove that has made me laugh ????

(The sad thing is unfortunately, your post is what many have been led to believe)
