So how do we feel about Sajid Javid telling us not to ‘cower’ from Covid

I hope you enjoyed your shopping trip to Leeds MissChateline. We have been getting out and about too. Life is too short to waste away inside your own four walls. People are starting to smile and chat which is lovely I think. Still some very miserable people about but I just ignore them. There has always been miseries about even before covid. So nothing new really. Hope you bought yourself something nice!

I go out of my way to avoid the sort of person who would call me a "misery". As far as I'm concerned, if such people need stimulation to make them happy, I'm happy to leave them to it. I'm far from being a misery or miserable.

I took a shopping trip to Leeds yesterday. On the train there and back I noticed only one person in my fairly busy carriage wearing a mask. She was probably in her 20’s. Very few mask wearers in the malls and shops. Staff in shops about 50/50 wearing masks. The town centre wasn’t busy but where it was there didn’t appear to be any distancing. Didn’t see any evidence of any cowering, just life getting back to some kind of normality.
What did shock me was seeing a blackboard outside a pub/eatery in my own small town announcing that if anyone wanted to continue to have table service for food or drinks that there would be a 10% additional charge.

Message from a friend:
She and her DH, both 70+, are both double vaccinated, wore masks, always observed distancing rules but both have caught Covid and are feeling quite poorly.

They have no idea where they caught it.

Their family already had it in the NY.

Thanks MazieD - it has felt inevitable really since the free for all was announced and I suspect we will be in this situation repeatedly for the next few months. At least I can help out if required at the moment. I won’t be able to from September as I’ll be back to full time then.

Cowering seems much the same as usual in my neck of the woods. Slightly more people without masks, but not many.

I do hope that your carer situation improves and that your son stays safe, Nezumi. It must be such a worry for you.

I am happy to report that it is estimated that 95% of people continue to wear a mask and cower ???

I’ve noticed many people wearing a mask in shops etc but quite a few not, mostly those aged 18-30 I’d say.

We didn't cower in New Zealand, but we locked down fast and thoroughly when it first appeared in this country. We continue to monitor, test and quarantine when necessary, which isn't very often. Vaccinations are freely available. They started with the frontline – doctors, nurses, ward maids, care workers, airport staff, etc., moved on to the most vulnerable with health issues and old age and are now available for the general population. We had rules about wearing masks on public transport and, generally speaking, people obeyed them. Perhaps we have become a little complacent because we do not have community transfer, but not having community transfer is a really good thing. We did not cower; we were just sensible. I do hope we continue to be.

Vaccinations are only available in NZ at the moment for vulnerable groups and over sixties, I believe? 14% of the population is fully vaccinated and another 7% partially vaccinated.

We have rules about wearing masks in public places too, and most people adhere to them. (Scotland)

NZ has had its borders closed to almost everybody for 15 months, and Jacinda Ardern recently said that will continue till at least 2022.

There are different interpretations of "cower".

Thanks Lucca. I thought this would happen although hoped the vaccinations would hold. I suppose the same must be happening across the country with people being supported who are far more frail than my son (although hopefully most will be vaccinated themselves - that’s the major problem for my son).

Well a double vaccinated member of my disabled son’s team has tested positive. This was my concern when starting this thread - it was inevitable once the numbers were pushed so high. I doubt she will be the last either (all the team are double jabbed, but they work in pairs in close contact with each other).

The team member sounds quite poorly but will hopefully be spared severe illness thanks to the vaccination. My son, as I mentioned, could not be vaccinated. I don’t think he’ll tolerate swabs up his nose or in his throat so we’ll just have to monitor for illness.

Lucca, when we requested 3 PCR after the one positive test, two of the test boxes did not have the royal mail tracking frank on them. I said to my husband we could just sellotape the other two boxes to the one with the tracking frank on but decided to ring 119 instead to make sure. The lady on the phone said they would have to send two more with tracking label on. They came but one of the bottles didn't have fluid in - luckily we had kept the other two kits so just transferred some fluid over but it's not very good is it?!

I think a lot of it has been regional from infection to testing and otherwise.

Best one I heard on radio yesterday was a man who got the kit but didn’t return it to the lab as he thought there was a part missing. He received a negative result ! I understand there are quite a lot of issues with various testing labs.

Yes and if you read down you will see omitted from the dashboard.

36 hours is a leap up from the 17 hours it took for a postal test for middle son last month. Drive in the ones were even faster at the time.
