Boris Johnson and his metaphorical fridge

Johnson is coming to Scotland later this week.

He can't even be arsed bothered to meet the woman running the show.

He's not just a buffoon, he's a rude, disrespectful buffoon.

Or is it just me who thinks that? I expect he's too busy, learning how to use an umbrella, or something like that.

Lucca Wed 04-Aug-21 17:17:34

It’s anti Scottish snobbery. I know, my mother had that attitude !

Alegrias1 Wed 04-Aug-21 17:27:57

DH is a part-time tour guide, in a place that has a lot of history associated with it. He is constantly coming home with tales about how his clients have no idea whatsoever about Scottish history and think we were living in mud huts until about 1842 wink I do think that's part of the problem, that there is often no concept of how Scotland was and is a separate country, with its own history and culture.

MaizieD Wed 04-Aug-21 17:40:45

that there is often no concept of how Scotland was and is a separate country, with its own history and culture.

If it's any consolation I think that a lot of English don't have much idea even of English history and culture. History is for nerds..

I don't understand why anyone should be snobbish about the Scots. Scotland has nurtured many great men (probably some great women, too, but not so well known). Wasn't Edinburgh known at one time as the 'Athens of the North'?

In fact, why should the English be snobbish about any other nation in Great Britain?

I can't see anything particularly wrong with Nicola Sturgeon, either.

BlueBelle Wed 04-Aug-21 18:03:17

I think Nicola Sturgeon is a good strong leader
I d prefer her to Johnson twit any day

Kali2 Wed 04-Aug-21 19:27:47

Refusing to meet up with NS will play right in her hands, and calls for Independence.

GillT57 Wed 04-Aug-21 20:13:05

I am fairly indifferent as to whether or not Johnson has a scene with NS while he is visiting Scotland, but when it was claimed that no such invitation had been extended, both DH and I shouted 'liar!'. Sad state of affairs really when the immediate assumption is that he is lying. Can't think why

Kali2 Wed 04-Aug-21 20:20:14

hmmmmmmmmmmm

nexus63 Wed 04-Aug-21 20:25:52

maybe bj wants a part in one of the movies filming in glasgow, as for not meeting our first minister, i find that very rude but i suppose nippy nicola will be glad she does not have to bother with him, she has done a much better job during covid than he has.

No point, Kali2. There are none so blind as those who cannot see past the "wonderful" Mr Johnson! grin

There are non so blind that can’t see beyond the manipulations of Sturgeon. . Dreadful woman, full of hate for the English people. She is an obsessive , and has only one obsession, to break up the UK. On that note I will leave you Sturgeon lovers, to admire on your own.

Parsley3 Wed 04-Aug-21 20:41:20

Lincslass you are funny.?

Alegrias1 Wed 04-Aug-21 20:52:44

It seems I'm a Meghan admirer, a Sturgeon lover and a Boris hater.

The things you learn about yourself on Gransnet, its an education. smile

Elleee Wed 04-Aug-21 21:10:54

Douglas Ross has quite the job on his hands doesn't he?
Rishi Sunack's latest podcast from Scotland, at one point, had fourteen listeners, mostly bored journalists
Hopefully England will soon learn to be as canny as the Scots
To answer the OP, Johnson's manners, sense of occasion, decency and diplomacy are appalling

Don't forget being a member of the loony left, and a Corbyn fan

The PM has shown disrespect to the Scottish people by ignoring the fact he is going to visit another country and should officially notify the First Minister. He is simply pushing more people into the independence camp.
I can quite understand why he would avoid a meeting with the First Minister. He must feel inferior in her presence. Playing the bumbling buffoon contrasts poorly when compared to an astute and able politician such as Ms.Sturgeon.

Whatdayisit Thu 05-Aug-21 08:12:03

I was privileged to be taken to Scotland on holiday as a child a number of times by my grandparents and we learnt quite a bit of 'tourist history'.
A lot of people know very little about English history these days as well as being ignorant about Scottish history - as pp has already said.
I would rather be driving up the A9 than down the M1. I like Nicola Sturgeon. She seems a confident leader. Not perfect but as we found out with Mr Blair who is! I don't know why so many dislike her.

Cathymac Thu 05-Aug-21 17:47:34

@Whatdayisit. Nicola Sturgeon has many mounting challenges. The SNP give a veneer of competence without tackling the underlying issues. Problems are .. highest drug deaths in Europe.... overdue ferries which are 4 years late and costing about twice the contract price . Increasing child poverty especially in Nicola Sturgeon’s own constituency. Many education failures. Health service problems .I think people vote for her because she appears competent and the opposition parties are not that strong. She talks a good game and specialises in grievance politics.

Parsley3 Thu 05-Aug-21 19:30:03

It is true that the Scottish opposition parties are very weak and that is not a healthy situation at all.

There is a great photo of Johnson on the cover of Private Eye of the umbrella incident with Prince Charles !

The look on the policeman's face behind him! grin

Alegrias1 Fri 06-Aug-21 11:11:07

BTW - at the risk of causing an international incident, wink I don't disagree much with Cathymac and Parsley3, apart from the politics of grievance bit.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 06-Aug-21 11:13:16

Sturgeon is a good politician but not necessarily good for Scotland

Here it is

I noticed that Charles totally ignored him the whole time.

Of course he would have ‘informed’ Sturgeon of the visit ( or
His staff at Number Ten would have) where on earth do you get your information from?!
He just isn’t going to meet her for discussions at this time.

I agree love him or hate him he is the Prime minister of the United Kingdom and can go where he wants voted in by a majority of United Kingdom Citizens via votes for their MP's.
It was reported in the English press that his aides had informed of his visit some weeks before that's how the venues were booked and agreed . He was only invited at the last minute[2 days before] to talks with Nicola Sturgeon and could not change his schedule.
A very crafty political move by MiS Sturgeon and colleagues if he had accepted he would have had to turn down already made plans. He said no and is said to look oafish a no-win situation for anyone even Boris.
The English are always being accused of not knowing Scottish history, I think it might depend on where and when you went to school in England. or where you have lived. I know where the plaque is declaring my county was part of a long-gone country called Strathclyde which was divided by Scots and English and assimilated into each country in the late 11 century and by a large road sign when I go shopping proclaiming" Last battle on English soil". I also know where King Edward" the Hammer of the Scots" died having seen the memorial many times.
How many Scots could explain the Synod of Whitby which did involve them without looking it up?

Alegrias1 Fri 06-Aug-21 15:27:39

OK, fair enough.

Its an Easter thing, no? That and the tonsures?

What are your thoughts on the kingdom of Dalriada? The Wars of Independence? The Enlightenment? The Scottish renaissance? (That's renaissance with a small r, the 20th Century one)

I actually commented that none of my DH's clients knew much about Scottish history, but many poeple have assumed I meant the English clients. We used to have a Scottish Cringe. Is there an English one now?
