Anyone else rooting for Pen and his animals ?

*Lucca*, dogs are not allowed to be pets by the Taliban. They are deemed unclean. They'd be shot.clubbed to death/burned etc etc

I've just had the misfortune to read an article in the Sunday Mail where Pen is being ripped to shreds by their angry readers. Bit like this thread actually.

This website informs of what they have done over the years

www.nowzad.com/our-work/our-shelter

They have also rehomed over 1000 dogs to their soldiers all over the world. The soldiers have taken great comfort in these dogs. 10 years ago the family of a young soldier managed to save his dog who had survived. Their son had told them about this lovely dog who had been his friend and support in that hell hole.

As *Alegrias! has pointed out, he didn't jump the queue. He was sat for 13 hours in scorching temperatures and didn't jump the queue. He didn't put dogs before people.

Just do a spot of research rather then taking snippets from the media

Im not a hater, I have not ripped Pen to shreds.
I haven’t taken snippets from the media.
I expressed an opinion quite politely.

I understand that Mr. Farthing and his accompanying cats and dogs are now in the UK, the animals have been examined by vets, declared to be in good health and are now in quarantine facilities.

Surely this is good news.

Dinahmo Sun 29-Aug-21 17:10:11

Excellent news.

I make no apologies, my reading is eclectic)

Mine too. When I did buy newspapers I had The Mail and The Mirror every morning. I like a balance.

JaneJudge Sun 29-Aug-21 17:18:36

this is an interesting article which will no doubt wind some people up

tickingbird Sun 29-Aug-21 17:22:09

However I don't think I've seen many links to the Mail (Daily or Sunday)

It would be pointless as regardless of the validity of the article it would be pooh poohed and the poster shot down in flames.

Dinahmo Sun 29-Aug-21 18:26:32

JaneJudge Why do you think that? I've just read it and the content seems to be reasonable and fairly accurate.

tickingbird people have only been poohed when they have come up with unsupportable comments. There are several on here for example.

Ailidh Sun 29-Aug-21 18:39:12

Excellent article, JaneJudge.

JaneJudge Sun 29-Aug-21 18:58:15

I thought it was reasonable too!

Maybe you should think about the ownership of the Sunday Times and a bit about Tim Shipman. The latter is currently political editor and has only ever written for right wing papers.

Dinahmo my reading may not be eclectic enough to read the Times - it's behind a paywall I think.

User7777 Sun 29-Aug-21 21:59:23

If only there were more humans like Pen Farthing, the world would be a better place.

Callistemon Sun 29-Aug-21 22:00:34

Ps I posted a link to The Guardian article, not the Times, Dinahmo

Maybe you should think about the ownership of the Sunday Times and a bit about Tim Shipman. The latter is currently political editor and has only ever written for right wing papers.

The former is owned by News UK which is a wholly owned subsidiary of News Corp (formerly News international). The CEO of News UK is Rebekah Brooks, formerly of News of the World and of course News Corp is owned by Robert Murdoch.

Brooks just happened to be editor during the infamous phone hacking which took place when the paper launched its campaign against "naming and shaming" whilst at the same time hacking the voice mail of Sarah Payne's mother.

The Guardian and the Observer are owned by a trust, as I'm sure you are aware. Are you saying that you disbelieve the statement that it was an announcement from the MOD?

The Guardian was instrumental in uncovering evidence about the phone hacking and is no friend of News Corp.

Not sure why I'm getting a lecture about The Times as I've never mentioned it, never read it and not linked to it.

There’s some strange comments on here. Lost me I’m afraid.

Maudi Mon 30-Aug-21 08:31:54

There is a great article about Pen and his animals in The Daily Mail today (after all the nasty ones at the weekend) and some stories about the animals he has helped.

That rests the case for now I would say.

Maudi Mon 30-Aug-21 08:39:27

The Daily Mail online.

Actually, the animals are in UK - he is in Norway

tickingbird Mon 30-Aug-21 09:39:48

Just heard on news that third of his animals were in the cabin not the hold. Also read that the shelter staff were supplied with visas so obviously not UK govs fault they weren’t allowed through.

It seems to be growing into a much bigger story than it should.

mumof2boys Mon 30-Aug-21 11:33:32

Convenient ‘look over there ‘ distraction from the Govt , their pet papers and social media bots.

Whilst everyone is arguing over Dogs & cats no one is asking why this evacuation didn’t start in May when they were warned to & why it’s such an appalling shambles.

mumof2boys Mon 30-Aug-21 11:36:19

As The Times, Telegraph and Daily Mail turn their fire on Farthing, The Observer reports that thousands of emails to the Foreign Office about the evacuation from Afghanistan went unread. That’s the story that should be getting the most attention today but the Tory-supporting press is putting the blame on one annoying bloke rather than a whole government of incompetents and grifters.

Pen Farthing left himself open to being framed as a villain by the papers and hero by his social media fans. While Ben Wallace rages and the right-wing newspapers smear, Dominic Raab will be absolutely delighted that he’s no longer the only one in the dog house.

Whatdayisit Mon 30-Aug-21 11:38:52

Yes absolutely mumof2boys and why is Raab still sitting pretty.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 30-Aug-21 11:43:11

There was a Government Minister in the news this morning I believe it was David Lammy. He reiterated that U.K. Nationals were informed in April this year to leave Afghanistan, and that’s when the evacuation started, five months to get out first on scheduled flights, when these were unable to continue it was charter flights and ending with military flights of the last week.

There was indeed a last minute rush, which no doubt was fuelled by the Taliban taking over the Country and ousting the legitimate Government. Not sure why US/U.K. intelligence could not have predicted this event?

The U.K. could not have stayed at Kabul Airport any longer as it was controlled and protected by US Forces. Once they were going home (leaving approximately $85 million of equipment including aircraft, black hawk helicopters and a multitude of armoured vehicles and weaponry, so the Taliban will either be extremely well equipped or rich on the proceeds of selling it to the highest bidder) the U.K. had no choice other than to withdraw.
