Harry does Something Commendable Shock!

Last night Harry made a speech at the GQ Awards.
He presented Prof Catherine Green, and Prof Dame Sarah Gilbert with the GQ ‘Heroes of the Year Award’.

I take both The Times and The Daily Mail.
I have read Harry’s speech and it seems wholly praiseworthy.
However, over the shoulder of DH, I see that Harry has still come under criticism by The Daily Mail for something or other that I can’t yet grasp…

that should read *without making condescending comments when expressing your point of view.

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Sept-21 19:58:30

You're not the only "straight talker" ... entitled to (your) opinion" and yes "we need a return of free speech in this country, etc, etc." so bear that in mind when others are doing the same, without making condescending comments about what your point of view.

Alegrias1 Fri 03-Sept-21 19:55:07

I'm sorry you find them condescending Smileless2012. I find the posts constantly criticising H&M for imagined slights and for being woke and hypocritical, childish and a little bit unsettling, as though there's a well spring of hatred just being held back that gets let loose as soon as anybody mentions them. Pitchforks at dawn. Personally, I don't think its healthy.

I'm a straight talker, I'm entitled to my opinion, we need a return of free speech in this country, etc, etc.

I don't understand why your posts on any thread that isn't 100% supportive of H & M have to be so condescending Alegrias, especially as you have no idea how many, if any of "their core audience" were over 50s Grans.

Whether you like it or not, H's population isn't what it once was and he only has himself to blame.

Alegrias1 Fri 03-Sept-21 19:40:14

Here's the thing. The people who organised the award ceremony probably chose presenters who they thought would be popular with the audience. I'm going to take a guess that getting Harry to talk about vaccines was a PR success for GQ, and unless I'm very wrong there's probably not that many GNers who read GQ. They really don't care what a bunch of over 50s Grans think of him, their core audience probably think he's the bees knees.

But you see Lucca for some it is "about all the sins that Meghan and harry have committed".

'One swallow doesn't make a summer' and one good speech from Harry after all the trashing of his own family, the lies that have been told and the unsubstantiated claims is nothing by comparison.

My first post on this thread was he has a mountain to climb and he does. Public opinion to a great extent is against him and it will take time and a lot of effort on his part to redress that, if ever.

Yes,but the Queen doesn't preach to the rest of us, the Queen doesn't bang on about compassion , except of course for her own family. The Queen is truthful, spot the difference .

That’s not what this is about! Does it matter if he had help with his speech ? Again ….the point is that whether gransnet like it or not Prince HarryM is still a high profile figure and the speech made good points which could actually be useful in persuading some people to be vaccinated .
It is not about all the “sins “ that Meghan and harry have committed
If the queen or William had given/read this speech what would you have said ??

Alegrias1 Fri 03-Sept-21 18:41:44

She probably read out the bit about not raising taxes. How's that going?

She'll read whatever they tell her.

I'm sorry, my world is rocked.

I just learnt that the Queen reads a speech somehow else has written for her. Nothing is as it seems. ?

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Sept-21 18:29:52

What's wrong with wearing a ball gown and puffing on a cigarette? I've done it. Don't think it would be good look for Harry though.

Well done Harry?!! All he did was read the script provided by someone else, hardly his own composition. No doubt it was good PR after the disasters, but to respond as if it was his own composition is a bit farcical. Harry does as he is told by his wife under whose thumb he is well lodged . He always seems frightened of her, probably with good reason.

Do you write for the Daily Mail? If you don’t, you should.

Yes, well done Harry. I think the tabloids and their followers are at the point now of condemning H&M even if they were to come up with a cure for cancer. In fact I blame the tabloids totally for H&Ms misfortune. Any other member of the public is allowed to retaliate if untruths are printed. Harry is way down the succession now so he is hardly upsetting the apple cart if he were to announce the racist(s) in the RF. I know the queen keeps tight lipped on most things but I don’t think many of her predecessors did. Her father for example was quite open about his original dislike of Churchill and he was quite the appeaser in the months leading up to WW2. I think we need more honesty and openness at Buckingham Palace. If the old guard don’t like it, well tough. BTW has anyone seen the recent photo of Queen Margrethe of Denmark? She’s wearing a ball gown and puffing on a cigarette. A very interesting woman who has done many things in her life including going to university, becoming an archaeologist and designing theatre sets. Sorry for the ramble, but...

Alegrias1 Fri 03-Sept-21 17:26:37

They have this thing now, called "scripts". Did anyone really think he wrote it himself?

God, I'd missed that little misconception. Jeezy peeps confused

tippytipsy Fri 03-Sept-21 17:20:32

Well, Alegrias, I will modestly admit I have A levels in English and one Science but couldn't have written a speech like that myself without some input from scientists who know about vaccinations.

Alegrias1 Fri 03-Sept-21 17:17:03

Maybe the words he spoke came from the scientists in the first place.

Wow, no depths too low, eh?

Why don't you drop Prof Green an email and tell her you think she, basically, wrote the speech and that her use of the word say is not to your satisfaction? I'm sure she loves getting letters like that.

tippytipsy Fri 03-Sept-21 17:07:42

I agree with you Alegrias with one small modification, "Harry READ exactly what they would have said." Maybe the words he spoke came from the scientists in the first place. I did see his eyes definitely light up and his tone become more expressive as he switched into military speak, calling the scientists "Heroes of the highest order."
Such a loss he no longer represents our servicemen and women, but his position would be untenable.

Alegrias1 Fri 03-Sept-21 17:00:01

So. Profs Green and Gilbert appear as excited as can be about their award and said that Harry said exactly what they would have said.

Farage and some non-entity of a Royal biographer appear on GB News (no, really, its still on) to laugh and say its gobbledegook. So anyway, we've found the learned people who criticised his speech hmm Would they have laughed at the Profs? Probably, they are imbeciles. That's me using my free speech smile

While PM tweets incomprehensible abbreviations and tries make the story all about himself.

Deedaa Fri 03-Sept-21 15:56:29

I am pleased they have won an award. I'm halfway through their book at the moment.

I'm not really anti Harry but I do think he may live to regret some of his actions.

Chewbacca Fri 03-Sept-21 15:53:12

I have no idea what Harry has/hasn't said this time and, tbh, I'm not interested, but this post: sounded as if he was reading the ingredients from the side of a Bisto packet. just cracked me up! Thanks Lemon! grin

theworriedwell Fri 03-Sept-21 15:43:19

Do people get paid for giving out these awards? Normally I suppose it would be a nice evening, good company and probably a nice meal but with covid and restrictions on travel it wouldn't be as much fun.

Anniebach Fri 03-Sept-21 15:31:22

The speech he read was good

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Sept-21 14:35:50

Unfortunately for H he is a cash cow for Omid Scobie and perhaps if he realised this and could get the odious man to keep his mouth shut, instead of constantly spewing anything and everything to create further division between him and his family, he may be better off.

TBH trisher as far as trying to build a career in media, this speech stands alone as it has a worth while message and is to do good, which makes a change from his other recent media career building speeches and interviews.

To be honest, I'm not interested in what Prince Harry's views are on any subject. I just wish that he would go and lead a private life somewhere.

Oh if only!
