I have discovered an advantage of Brexit

You get your passport stamped when you enter and leave EU countries.

Long ago in my youth, my passport were covered with entry and exit stamps, mostly Europe, a few more exotic. I was very proud of them. However in recent years, now I avoid air travel, my passport has gone its full life without any stamps in it.

But 10 days ago we went to France and my passport now has two stamps in it and will gather more, because we go there regularly. It will begin to look like a passport should.

Your German is wrong,
Are you sure Lucca? Verbs like gehen and sehen can certainly drop the final e before the n in speaking, usually with an apostrophe in writing. It was definitely used like that in the tv series and in songs etc.

Urmstongran Wed 08-Sept-21 07:28:21

But why would we go back to dirty beaches vegansrock? Especially with staycations post pandemic I imagine most councils will want clean spaces to encourage visitors! That way, the cost of keeping them lovely to use would be self funding. It makes no sense otherwise.

I think it just suits the narrative of those who wish we’d stayed in the EU to posit worst-case scenarios on here really. ‘Could’ ‘might’ ‘may’ etc about the future. So many glum buckets after a democratic vote that didn’t go their way. I’m more optimistic about our future post Brexit.

Urmstongran ‘Could’ ‘might’ ‘may’ etc about the future

Just like I imagine is nothing to do with facts but just personal belief.

M0nica Wed 08-Sept-21 08:10:24

Urmstongran I have stuck rigidly to what is happening, no coulds or shoulds from me.

vegansrock Wed 08-Sept-21 08:13:40

Well you’ve obviously missed the news Urmstongran that water/ sewage companies have been given permission to discharge raw sewage into the waterways without penalties- this is because of the disruption in the supply chain ( thank you Brexit) in delivery of the chemicals needed to treat the sewage. This permission has been possible directly because of Brexit - thanks again- water companies want to reap the profits for their mostly foreign owners so it’s win win for them. Bad luck swimmers, paddle boarders etc.

At what point will all the people telling us were just pessimists open their eyes and realise that what we told them would happen is actually happening?

Probably never, and even if they acknowledge something's gone wrong, it'll be somebody else's fault. The nasty, vindictive EU countries, probably, for treating us the way we asked them to treat us.

Much better to call us glum buckets and skip gaily into an uncertain future with eyes firmly shut.

Yes I’m sure. She dropped both final “e’s”. ( wiedershn) I wouldn’t have been so petty as to mention it had her post not been so rude.

frankiemf Wed 08-Sept-21 08:32:48

So we are both right Lucca. I missed the 1st "e", the second ommission is acceptable.

It is four different countries. ?

At least in Spain the beaches are as good as anywhere, certainly better than ours will now become due to raw sewage etc. The government is passing a bill allowing free reign to the sewage companies. So enjoy your EU protected beaches - I envy you.

They need nationalising imo. I live in the South and Southern water are one of the worst. My DS has moaned about the EAs inability to mitigate against the outrage for years. The government prevents them from doing so. People who use the sea a lot regularly suffer from throat and ear infections. Now without the brake of EU regs., it will be a very dodgy pastime.

And don’t forget our rivers they will also suffer. How many years of effort has it taken us to get them anywhere near good enough for wildlife to thrive. Water is also taken out of our rivers in vast quantities by the water companies, further degrading our beautiful water courses.

This is what Brexiters voted for.

NotSpaghetti Wed 08-Sept-21 08:47:50

We need massive investment in UV systems in my opinion. Our water purification systems are pretty antiquated.

vegansrock Wed 08-Sept-21 09:24:52

Only 16% of our rivers meet EU standards now. Another bonus for Brexit- water companies can’t be fined for polluting our waterways.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Sept-21 09:35:00

vegansrock I assume that you are referring to the article in the Guardian?

The Government is concidering issuing a temporary waiver that will allow Water Companies to discharge after three treatments instead of the usual three, no raw sewage is/will be currently allowed to be discharged.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Sept-21 09:36:51

You need to work in the EA and then you wouldn’t be saying that with such confidence.

It is outrageous what the water companies get away with.

They need nationalising.

Jackiest Wed 08-Sept-21 09:43:14

You are looking at the sewage problem wrong. By not having to treat it properly think of the extra profit we will make and how much richer we will be.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Sept-21 09:45:16

Whitewavemark2 you are correct, having lived in mainland Europe and seen all sorts in the sea and some rivers quoting how good the EU rules are is misleading. Rules can be and are regularly ignored.

The U.K. water will still have gone through two treatments instead of three, so it was an erroneous post to say raw sewage will be discharged.

Alegrias1 Wed 08-Sept-21 09:52:49

.

NotSpaghetti Wed 08-Sept-21 10:09:40

We are already discharging raw sewage.

No, the government isn't 'considering it', GG13. I don't think you read Guardian article properly.

It essentially says that the waiver was being prepared so that it could be implemented if a company reported a shortage of ferric sulphate to Defra. It's not a 'could' or a 'might', it's a 'will'.

The. How come European waterways and sea quality consistently does better than U.K. water?

Brexit is costing the U.K. £600 million a week.

We are trashing out commitment to the Paris agreement in order to get a tiny trade deal with Australia, what on Earth will we trash in order to get a deal with USA?

“NEW EXCL via
@SamCoatesSky
... Leaked government emails reveal ministers have bowed to pressure to drop key climate commitments from the UK-Australia trade deal in order to get it over the line. References to specific temperature commitments will disappear.”

Well, so happy someone has found ONE advantage in Brexit.
