Reintroducing Imperial measures…..

Please tell me the government aren’t planning to do this and it’s just a joke…..

It saves me asking for 568ml of lager when at pub now, that was a massive imposition. Coming over here changing our pints to 568 millimetres, what a liberty

Urmstongran Fri 17-Sept-21 09:25:25

I don’t suppose we’ll ever go back to gallons for our fuel at the pumps ...

£1.30 per litre sounds cheaper than £5.80 a gallon!!

Cost of recalibration of pumps.

Oh and by the time that was done petrol and diesel would be illegal on the road.

Perhaps the British Thermal Unit?

Riverwalk Fri 17-Sept-21 09:22:39

No not snooty Urmston - just how I see it.

Do you know many people under the age of say 65 who think in terms of freedom when referring to imperial measures, or educated people who hanker after buying potatoes in pounds?

We have always been free to think in pounds and ounces but it didn't make sense for one EU country, the UK, to have a different system, considering trade, science etc. Apart from the US, almost every country in the world is metric.

^This sort of 'freedom' nonsense often appeals to certain sectors of society, usually older, less well-off and poorly educated.^

Exactly Riverwalk.

That's why I'm bothered GG13. Its playing to the gallery and getting in another dig at those nasty Europeans who wouldn't let us put the Crown on our pint glasses hmm

Except we could have put crowns on our glasses all along. Just not used them to certify the amount in the glass.

Isn’t this just today’s ‘have a go at the government’ offering, only this time with a particularly rude, insulting comment about Brexit voters(MaizieD 8.23am) ?

It’s a bit of a non story really, although it’s a long overdue assurance that shop keepers and market stall holders won’t be prosecuted for displaying their wares in Imperial.

My children are 43 & 39 - I still have the little card tags from their hospital cots and the weights are in kilos.

Snooty, much?

I don’t really know any Imperial units of measure. As a student I was taught metric and at work I used metric. If this were to happen it would push up the cost of living (again). There are are lot of industries that would have to replace costly machinery. Mind you my ex colleagues in tech would make a killing re-writing software to cope grin

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 09:12:09

No idea where that came from, sorry!

Riverwalk Fri 17-Sept-21 09:11:56

Over the decades we've developed a mix of the two systems and I imagine it will stay that way. I can't see many businesses seriously taking up Imperial measures.

I am not in the least bothered Alegrias1 but reading the two threads this morning there are quite a few posters who are…

Nothing wrong with having a choice surely?

Why bother? Anybody still measuring in ells? Paying in groats?

Just wait till Patel brings up the death penalty again now that we're out of the EU

Polarbear2 Fri 17-Sept-21 08:55:18

Dead cat. Also another move to try and create a divide between young and old. This Gov loves to create division. It distracts from what’s really going on.

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Sept-21 08:54:30

I've never stopped using imperial measurementsblush.

I am in my 70’s and must live in a parallel universe. While in primary school we were taught in imperial measurements, by secondary school everything changed to metric which was so much simpler especially for science. I think in kilos, metres, litres etc. my babies were weighed using metric scales though the medical staff also told you what that “translated to in old measurements” if you were interested.
Only the road signs never caught up, goodness knows why, which means that I still think of distances in miles though just to confuse things further in Scotland distances are often quoted in minutes.?

There's a peculiar thing with the weather where we tend to use Fahrenheit for high temperatures and Celsius for low (although over the last few years Celsius for high also has become more common)

Chestnut Fri 17-Sept-21 08:53:50

I prefer measurements in centimetres but they still show inches on many items on Amazon for instance. Very confusing when you're trying to compare items and they are different. I am happy to keep body weights in imperial but prefer decimal for weighing parcels and food. I also like miles when travelling. Our system is confusing because we are caught between two worlds!

What do the lions mean.

it means the hens are vaccinated for salmonella and kept to/in a good standard.

As far as I am aware this won't a compulsory change - if anyone wants to continue using metric they can. It is merely allowing shops to use imperial if they wish, why is anyone getting so het up about it

It's a tradings standards issue. Businesses need to be able to show that that they're delivering the correct measurement of whatever they are selling. It just makes it more complicated if two different standards are running side-by side.

Visgir1 Fri 17-Sept-21 08:48:02

I was a generation who was taught Metric as it was due in,that was in the 1970's My school like many others taught both metric and imperial.
I'm 66 and I don't think imperial, but can do it.
It's too late now to change back now and why do it, cost a fortune!
