Please tell me the government aren’t planning to do this and it’s just a joke…..

How does anybody think people outside the UK or US measure bra sizes?

25Avalon Fri 17-Sept-21 11:21:23

I am amazed. It’s a dictat if it’s from Boris but not from the EU. The EU made various regulations and laws which all member states had to follow. As we were the only country using imperial our vote would have counted for nothing. We weren’t allowed to opt out. Dictat by any other name.

Zoejory Fri 17-Sept-21 11:18:30

Why on earth should we want to go back and cause extra work on conversions?

Totally agree. But that isn't what's allegedly going to happen. They are just removing the legal requirement to use metric.

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 11:17:40

"Clearly you are one of thebetter educated,Alegrias1"

You might think so, I couldn't possibly comment. wink

Perhaps the better educated can understand that having two parallel systems of measurement in use means that pricing of goods at point of sale then becomes easier to scam the purchaser, or that this would require dual price labelling which would incur cost for the retailer? Or that Imperial measures based on Base12 have long been recognised as an unnecessarily complex system that makes it difficult for people to measure things easily?

Clearly you are one of the better educated, Alegrias1

I'd ask you your bra size but feel that would be rather impertinent.

This is basically a government/Brexit bash.

I am no Tory. Nor did I vote for Brexit. However I can see that we are still using Imperial measurements in many areas of life.

All this is doing is stopping the legal enforcement of metric.

I am now about to purchase my 86.36 Centimeters B bra.

growstuff Fri 17-Sept-21 11:09:51

No, I don't know the Imperial equivalent. I could Google it, but I have no reason. I know my own weight in metric, but not Imperial, too. I know how many calories are in a gram of fat, protein and carbohydrate, but haven't a clue what the Imperial equivalents are.

The only Imperial measurement which has any meaning to me is miles because road signs and speed limits use them. I'm 66 and O levels in 1971 used metric measurements.

Why on earth should we want to go back and cause extra work on conversions?

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 11:07:43

topping us using both systems and the crown on pint glasses was a dictat by the EU.

We were members. Nobody dictated anything.

Selective memory there.

25Avalon Fri 17-Sept-21 11:06:20

Boris said he was going to do this before he was elected in 2019. Maybe he just wants to make sure he can keep one pre election promise. As both systems metric and imperial can be used I don’t suppose it will make much difference except life will be easier for those who think in imperial. Stopping us using both systems and the crown on pint glasses was a dictat by the EU. I’m surprised we weren’t told we had to drive on the right hand side of the road.

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 11:05:01

But it does seem to be upsetting the better educated amongst us!

Or that Imperial measures based on Base12 have long been recognised as an unnecessarily complex system that makes it difficult for people to measure things easily?

Or perhaps the better educated can see that pandering to ideas of British exceptionalism will win the Tories votes among those who hark back to the good old days? Or those who don't like those nasty Napoleonic measures?

Just a thought.

Why have we never fully implemented the metric system? I was taught it at school, but we are still using miles and pounds, stone etc. The metric system is so much easier, we should have gone with it years ago. (I say this admitting to still thinking in feet and inches and stone for weight/height).
As for temperature, why does the Daily Mail insist on using fahrenheit? It means nothing to me. Are they actually pandering to American readers?

Weather temperatures in England sometimes seem to be expressed in the media from about -10 to 22 then 75 to 95, and nothing in between and nothing about the temperature scale being used. smile

My children are 43 & 39 - I still have the little card tags from their hospital cots and the weights are in kilos.

Amazing!

I have 4 children mid 20s - 40s. All of their weights were imperial

Same for all my grandchildren. Age ranges from 2 - 16

I have never met anyone who told me the weight of their children in kilos

And why do people care so much about this? It seems to be those opposed who are the most upset.

All it is doing is making it lawful again to use Imperial measurements.

But it does seem to be upsetting the better educated amongst us!

Both my children are now in their 20s and I was given their metric weights. I don't even know the imperial equivalents. I still have the little booklets to record their progress.

As someone said, it must be a regional thing.

I'm sure you do know the Imperial equivalent though!

MaisieD You mean I voted remain because I'm not mind bogglingly stupid?

Definitely not.

I'm still in Imperial! Buying online - description says it's x cms by x cms, I just cannot picture in my head. But x inches by x inches I can picture in my mind, no problems!

The Imperial Measures police grin sounds like an Indie band

maddyone Fri 17-Sept-21 10:46:02

I don’t want to go back to using imperial measures. We already slip between metric and imperial quite easily, myself included. I weigh myself in stones but measure cooking ingredients in metric. Fluids are all metric but we still buy a pint in the pub. The mixed up system works perfectly well, and it should be left alone.

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 10:45:57

But you can mock and laugh at people who you think intellectually inferior Brexit voters, but in reality the last laugh may be on you.

Anybody who thinks it is a priority to allow people to use pounds and ounces in a formal way in this country in this day and age, or who thinks that regressing to an archaic system that only the US, Liberia and Myanmar currently use, needs to recalibrate their expectations. You may think they are intellectually inferior, I couldn't possibly comment.

I find the "last laugh may be on you comment" quite scary, actually. Are the Imperial Measures police going to come and get us? Is that before or after they rename the place Airstrip One?

JaneJudge Fri 17-Sept-21 10:45:06

Oh we had a twingo as a hire car once in Spain, it was brilliant. They never made them here did they? Like the screw top large bottles of San Miguel. They could have been amazing imports

NotSpaghetti Fri 17-Sept-21 10:43:46

Does anyone know their bra size in metric?

Yes, me! ?
