Just after WW1 the house was gifted to all future PMs by somebody - with a rich American wife - his name escapes me.

It was for peace and recreation.

What centenary is being celebrated?

The Mail is billing it as “The most awkward dinner party in the World- ever”

?

Being disliked by former PM’s means nothing. Why would Tony Blair & Gordon Brown like Boris? confused

Boris is popular with the ‘people’ - that’s all that matters. smile

Can we all go round for a knees-up? What's on the menu?

After all, Chequers was given to the nation.

Correction - "some people".

With respect, that is a tad naive if I may say so.

I read that:

The taxpayer contributes £916,000 a year towards the upkeep of Chequers and it is mainly staffed by members of the armed forces.

But the prime minister has to pay for food, drink and entertainment themselves. Some of them, including Mr Johnson, have complained about the cost of playing the host.

Deliveroo for two, Tess?

He won’t be putting his hand into his pocket??. Plenty of donors up for a favour in return.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 18-Sept-21 14:41:35

None of them are willing to be part of the optics that is the Johnson carnival.

He is intensely disliked by all former PMs including Mrs May.

Yes, a good point.

Perhaps it's the title and tone of the thread which is totally misleading!

I don’t think so.

Why is it bad manners to decline an invitation? Surely bad manners would be either not replying to the invitation or agreeing to go and not turning up!?

Definitely agree with the above.

I read that the invitations were issued very late and that most had prior engagements.

However they may disagree with Johnson and his politics and perhaps with just cause, it really does show ill manners to decline the invitation unless they have good reason - which it sounds as if all but Mrs May have.
It isn't Boris's party as such, but to celebrate an historic event.

poshpaws Sat 18-Sept-21 14:18:33

Shows just how deeply toxic Johnson is, if true, because some of those living ex-pm's are pretty soiled goods themselves!

Polarbear2 Sat 18-Sept-21 14:13:39

If true then they’ve all gone up in my estimation ?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 18-Sept-21 14:10:11

100 year celebration to take place at Chequers.

All living prime ministers were invited to dinner with Johnson.

Every single one turned their invitation down except May, and I bet she is spitting tacs at the thought of sitting down with Johnson.
